SIP Trunking For Dummies: Which Codec Should You Use? #voip #codec #comparison

How To Describe the Quality of a SIP Trunking Call

“So clear, you can hear a pin drop!”

Are you old enough to remember the very successful tag line for Sprint Communications’ long distance service back in the ancient 1990’s?

“Can you hear me now?”

Or. Did you grow up remembering the equally (if not more) successful phrase that Verizon Wireless made part of our cultural reality in the new millennium?

Regardless of which slogan became your favorite lexicon, the fact remains that since the advent of cell phones and VoIP calls, we now regard voice quality on quite a different scale.

Today, the most common and simple method to use for judging call quality is to ask; “is it less than, equal to or better than an excellent cell phone call?”

On the other hand, a more professional method that is used when evaluating the quality of VoIP call quality is a scale called the mean opinion score .

Mean Opinion Scores (MOS)

Mean opinion score (MOS) is a test that has been used for decades in telephony networks to obtain the human user’s experience of the quality of a phone call.

The MOS is assigned by a group of listeners using the following values:

5 – Excellent
4 – Good
3 – Fair
2 – Poor
1 – Bad

Now, that we have a way to compare voice over IP call quality, let’s take a look at the magical (and very geeky) technology that can be used in VOIP phone calls.

Codec Types

What’s a Codec?

A codec, which stands for coder-decoder. converts an audio signal (your voice) into compressed digital form for transmission (VoIP) and then back into an uncompressed audio signal for replay. It’s the essence of VoIP. Codecs vary in the sound quality, the bandwidth required, the computational requirements, etc. Each service, program, phone, gateway, etc. typically supports several different codecs, and when talking to each other, negotiate which codec they will use.

Little Known FactYou can assign a different codec to individual phones. Your staff can use medium quality/low bandwidth G.729 codec while the boss and legal department uses the superior quality/heavy bandwidth G.722 codec.

Common VoIP Codec Protocols

G.729 G.729 is a codec that has low bandwidth requirements but provides good audio quality. This is the most commonly used codec in VoIP calling and has a MOS rating of 4.0

G.711 G.711 is a codec that was introduced by ITU in 1972 for use in digital telephony. With only a 1:2 compression and a 64K bitrate for each direction (128K plus some overhead), it is best used where there is a lot of bandwidth available. G.711 has a MOS rating of 4.2

G.722 G.722 is a high bit rate (48/56/64Kbps) ITU standard codec which, because it is of even better quality of the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN), it can be used for a variety of higher quality speech applications. This standard also requires an adequate amount of bandwidth and usually rates a 5.0 on the MOS scale.

Summary

There are many codecs out there, some like the G.711 are royalty-free, others require licensing (which is often included in the gateways). Some that we haven’t mentioned here drive the wholesale movement of voice traffic among the carriers and are used for specialty applications. And to make it a bit more confusing, they all contain variations within their own specification.

How to Decide?

The codecs that provide the best quality consume the most data bandwidth, thus there is a trade-off that you need to consider. The easiest way is to ascertain, on a phone by phone basis, whether you want the voice conversation to be:

  • Slightly less than the quality of an excellent cell phone call (G.729)
  • Equal to the quality of an analog land-line today (G.711)
  • Better than the public switched telephone network for voice critical applications (G.722)

Need some help in reviewing your SIP Trunking needs? The staff at TeleDynamic Communications has years of experience helping small and medium businesses make these decisions.

PBX (Private Branch eXchange)

A phone switch located at the customer’s premise. A PBX comes in many sizes, from 2 lines to thousands of phone lines. Common features can include an ACD for call distribution and IVR that can process incoming phone calls prior to routing to call stations. Some PBX’s support outbound dialing protocols such as autodialing, progressive dialing and predictive dialing. A PBX usually has many more features than a standard phone system.

A Hosted PBX (sometimes called a Virtual PBX) offers similar functionality and features, but the switching is located a central location and only the phones are at the customer site.

What is a PBX?

A PBX, which stands for “private branch exchange,” is simply a way for a telephone system to have internal switching. It’s mainly made up of a variety of different telephone system branches that are linked together and allows connections to be made in between them, which causes the telephones themselves to be linked together.

What are PBXs used for?

A company will generally have a ton of phones, often one for each worker. Rather than getting a separate phone line for each one of these, they utilize a PBX in order to link all of their internal phones together to be used to link to the external world in a much more efficient capacity. It allows a variety of people to use just one line, which allows the company to have one phone number to connect with to the outside world.

A PBX vs a Phone

A PBX is not the same as a traditional phone. The numbering format is not the same, as it uses an internal numbering system specific to that business. If you’re inside a PBX, you’ll only need to dial a three or four digit number to make another call within the network. These are what are referred to as ‘extensions.’ If a person were to call into the system from outside, they’d be able to reach the person they want to speak with directly by dialing an extension after the overarching business number.

The Main Roles of a PBX

To ensure that resources are kept in order to keep connections in the same place.
To create connections by acting as a switch between telephone users.
To record any data associated with a call, such as quantities, call volume, metering, and statistics.
To correctly terminate a call once one of the users hang up the phone.

Functions of a PBX

  • It allows a company to have one single phone number that people can use to contact a number of different internal representatives.
  • It uses an automatic call distribution (ACD) feature, which allows calls to be distributed evenly amongst the various employees of an answering team.
  • It can provide automated call answers and provide anyone calling in with a number of menu options that’ll be used to select which department or extension they want to go to on their own.
  • It allows for automated greetings that are customizable.
  • It provides a host of management features.
  • It allows providing custom music to callers that are on hold while waiting for an internal employee to answer.
  • It can be used to record separate voice messages for each extension.
  • It allows internal calls to be made in between stations.

IP PBX

PBXs have been around for a long time, as they were originally created during the age of landline telephone systems. Today’s technology allows has made it so that PBX systems can be used by Voice over IP (VoIP) services using IP PBX (internet protocol private branch exchange).

Before this time, PBX systems used to only be something that larger companies could have, but with the rise of the internet, virtually any sized business can afford to get the same benefits of a PBX system. Some money will have to be invested up front, but it allows smaller businesses to utilize a host of great features and also look much more professional.

The main things that IP PBX systems bring to the table is scalability, enhanced features, and better management. Since IP PBX systems are based around software rather than physical devices, it’s much easier to upgrade and move than earlier PBX systems.

VoIP Phones

This page describes the VoIP phones, its types, how it works and its advantages and disadvantages. Click on any of the following links to get to the corresponding answer.
For more technical details read through VoIP technology .

  • What is a VoIP phone?
  • What is an Internet phone?
  • What is a SIP phone?
  • What is a softphone?
  • What do I need to use a VoIP phone?
  • How does a VoIP phone work and how is it different form a normal phone?
  • What are the advantages of VoIP phones?
  • What are the disadvantages of VoIP phones?
  • What are the ITSPs (Internet Telephony Service providers)?

VoIP means Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP phones (or Digital Phones) send voice data in packets over the IP layer. The services they provide are typically the same as the normal phones but the underlying network and the technology are different.

  • It might be a dedicated device (like the traditional handset) using IP connection.
  • It can also be a normal phone connected to the network through a telephony adapter (TA).
  • Else it can be a softphone .

An Internet Phone is a VoIP phone that uses the public Internet to send voice traffic. Most VoIP phones can be used as an Internet Phone with a little tweaking. However first-generation Internet phones such as the PingTel Expressa have been on the market since 2001.

Typically, an Internet Phone uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) or Media Gateway Control Protocol (MeGaCo). A VoIP phone based on SIP is called a SIP phone. You can have a basic introduction on SIP.

A softphone is a software that runs on a general purpose computer instead of a dedicated device. It simulates the experience of a normal phone with the aid of a headset or a USB device. These use different implementation techniques. They might use standard protocols like SIP or H.323 or a proprietary one.
The most typical SIP-based soft phones as of today include – eyeBeam from CounterPath (formerly Xten), OpenWengo, Nexge, sipXphone, Adore Softphone, Express Talk and SJphone.
Applications like Skype, Google Talk or Yahoo Messenger use proprietary environments of their own. They are not intercompatible.

  1. You need an Internet Connection, a good one, preferably broadband.
  2. You need to register with a ITSP (Internet Telecom Service Provider). You can have a look at the list of ITSP.
  3. If you want to use your older telephone, you need a telephony adapter (TA) to connect the analog phone to the digital network.
  4. Instead of (3) you might take a new voip phone or use a softphone.

VoIP uses an IP based network over which it transmits voice data in the form of packets. Normal phones send analog signals over a switched network (PSTN: Public Switched Telephone Network), which is specifically designed for voice transmission. For a more detailed discussion on the technology, have a look at VoIP technology. Some differences between the VoIP phones and the traditional phones will be clearer as you go through the advantages and disadvantages of VoIP phones.

  • Low cost. Calls over the internet are generally free. That means you can call anyone anywhere in the world just like sending emails. However, the cost for the internet usage is there. There are charges for calling PSTN phones but long distance calls are in general cheaper than traditional landline connections.
  • You can just plug your device anywhere, e.g. in a hotel room and it works as if you are at home. Your number remains the same. There is no roaming cost unlike your mobile phone connection.
  • If you donot have a good internet connection, rather stay away from voip. People have mixed feelings. Some report to have used voip comfortably over dial-up connections, some complain that they had bad experiences even over DSL. To be on the safe side, you need a reliable connection with good uplink bandwidth.
  • The device or the modem through which you connect to the network needs power, either from battery or directly from the line. This might pose a problem where there are frequent powercuts.
  • Number portability if you are switching from a regular phone. Some providers might not even support number portability, some might take considerable delay for the process.
  • Reliability of the system is under doubt as Internet was not designed for real-time services like voice.
  • Support for 911 is not well-defined. Some voip service providers do have support for the emergency number but the way the emergency call is handled might be different from one operator to other.

In spite of the points discussed here, voip telephony has a future. The problems will get solved gradually. However, it is unlikely that voip telephony will take over the PSTN system overnight.

Here’s what we’ll cover in this guide:

  • What are Virtual, Hosted and Cloud PBXs?
  • Choosing Between an On-Site or a Hosted (or Cloud, or Virtual) PBX
  • Final Consideration

What are Virtual, Hosted and Cloud PBXs?

A PBX, or Private Branch Exchange, is at the heart of every business phone system. It is the central component that integrates all internal phone extensions with all external phone lines, and allows calls to be set up and transferred between them. Originally, PBXs were big, physical machines. First, they were switchboards with human operators; later, the switchboards became automated. But since the late 1990s, they have been available in a new form: as virtual or hosted machines.

It s important to point out that the terms “virtual,” “hosted” and “cloud” have all been used very loosely over the years. In the late 1990s, a company by the name of “Virtual PBX” was the first to offer a service similar to what most now call a hosted PBX. Theirs was a much more limited service: it could only forward incoming calls. (Businesses would pay for a single business number, and when their customers called it, Virtual PBX would route those incoming calls to their employees on-site or off-site phones.)

In the early 2000s, as VoIP networks expanded and their connectivity to landlines improved, most of the virtual PBX call-forwarding companies added outbound calling to their plans. These new plans took on a new description: hosted PBX services. Then, when cloud became the buzzword for describing hosted services, this term, too, joined the mix.

Today, we see the three terms “virtual,” “hosted” and “cloud” used interchangeably. Buyers should not assume that the terms imply any specific set of features. All services need to be compared in detail to understand what they offer.

Choosing Between an On-Site or a Hosted (or Cloud, or Virtual) PBX

Choosing a new phone system is one of the most daunting tasks a business can face. There are many technologies on the market that are competing with, overlapping and blurring the distinctions between one another. As we just explained, cloud, virtual and hosted are all used to describe a PBX that s hosted off-site by a third party. So how do on-site PBXs compare to those hosted in the cloud?
