What Is Common Stock and What Is Preferred Stock? Stock Types and Their Differences

What Is Common Stock and What Is Preferred Stock? Stock Types and Their Differences Explained

NEW YORK (TheStreet ) — When you step into the investing jungle, what will you find there? Lions (stocks) and tigers (bonds) and bears (cash), for sure. But they’re not as scary as you think.

These three are the main investment classes, but the one we’ll be tracking exclusively in this guide is the king of the jungle: stocks.

You may have heard stocks referred to as equities or securities. The reason they’re called equities is that you purchase an equity, or ownership, share of a company. Stock is also called a security for the same reason, because you’re securing a share of ownership in the company. That’s right; you’ll be a business owner just like you’ve always dreamed!

But, as you know from everyday life, there are terrifically run businesses and there are businesses that make you say, “I’ll never go back there again!” How do you know the difference before you buy the stock? That’s what this guided tour will be teaching you.

So when you buy stock, you become part owner of the company — maybe only a very small part, but still an owner. The size of the part you own, by the way, is irrelevant to your personal objectives.

We won’t cover bonds in this guide, but it’s important for you to know that they’re out there in the investing jungle. When you buy a bond, you don’t become part owner of a company — you’re the bank! You lend the company, or others, money. When companies, counties, municipalities or the U.S. government need to raise money, but not raise taxes or prices, they have bond offerings.

Bonds are loans, with a maturity date, and a percentage rate, promised to you, the Bank of I.O.U. The maturity date and set percentage rates can make bonds an attractive investment as part of a stabilizing influence in your investment portfolio. But you don’t want just bonds in your portfolio — over the long haul, stocks outperform bonds. If you want to purchase and own bonds, it’s very important to have quality bonds in your portfolio. If you want to continue to learn about bonds, see “Why Buy Bonds?”

When financial advisers suggest you diversify, or vary your investments, they’re advising you to spread out any potential risk, or decline, in your investment portfolio. Your investment portfolio is a collection of all of your investments, which could include assets from each of these three classes.

It’s like a nutritionist telling you to eat a little bit of each type of food to maximize your health. A balance of green vegetables, lean meats, dairy products and whole grain breads keep you physically and mentally healthy. Likewise, you want to invest your money in a variety of assets in your portfolio: stocks, bonds and cash products. Cash investments include products such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and money market mutual funds that keep you financially healthy.

Ready then? Get out your compass.

Merkel: Europeans now have to fight for their own future #politics, #merkel: #europeans #now

    #

While campaigning, Merkel says Europeans can’t ‘completely’ rely on US, others

Steffen Seibert, Merkel’s spokesman, addressed the comments at a Monday news conference in Berlin.

“The chancellor’s words stand on their own,” Seibert said. “They were clear and comprehensible.”

Nevertheless, Seibert said Merkel remained “a deeply convinced trans-Atlanticist.”

“Those who have accompanied Chancellor Merkel journalistically for a long time know how important the German-American relations are,” Seibert said. “They are a pillar for our foreign and security policy and Germany will continue to work on strengthening those relationships. Second point: Chancellor Merkel has said before that Europe has its fate in its own hands.”

    Wary meeting

Trump failed to reassure European leaders about his commitment to combating Russian aggression with his remarks at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

The speech, delivered last Thursday resurfaced questions about Trump’s position toward Russia and drew attention again to the federal investigation in Washington.

In the address he pointedly instructed member nations to increase their defense spending.

I will make my final decision on the Paris Accord next week!

NATO leaders chafed at Trump’s lecture, which did not acknowledge member states’ recent increases in military spending nor did it include a reaffirmed US commitment to the alliance’s mutual defense pledge, in light of Trump’s disparaging comments about the alliance during his campaign.

Then at the G7 summit on Friday and Saturday, leaders including Merkel failed to convince Trump to commit to stay in the Paris climate deal.

Trump tweeted from Sicily on Saturday that he would make a final decision next week, and the US took a separate stance on climate from the other nations in the official G7 communique.

    Stark contrast

Merkel met with former US President Barack Obama in Berlin prior to the NATO summit on Thursday.

Along with Obama, Merkel has been one of the most prominent voices from Western nations countering nationalist movements of the kind represented by the Brexit campaign and Trump’s policies.

At the Sunday campaign event, Merkel said that Europeans would continue to work in friendship with the US, the UK and others wherever possible, including Russia, but stressed her view that Europeans must be self-reliant.

“We need to know that we have to fight for our own future and destiny as Europeans,” Merkel said.

She went on to express solidarity with the UK against terror, following a deadly attack at a concert in Manchester, England, last week.

If her party is successful in German elections this fall, Merkel would stand for a fourth term as chancellor. Merkel closed out her Munich speech drinking a mug of beer surrounded by supporters doing the same.

CNN’s Sara Mazloumasaki and Nadine Schmidt contributed to this report.

Which RN program (full-time) to choose in the East Bay area

    Quote from turbohound

I’m an East Bay local also looking into RN programs. I’m looking at your list as well as Ohlone and Modesto. Chabot has expanded their program to allow for ten more students at the Las Positas campus. Also, the south bay programs are accessible via the ACE train. I’m volunteering at Valleycare to get a feel for nursing. Any idea what the wages are like?

    Hi Lizz and turbohound !

    Thanks for your messages.

You mention Ohlone college, which I visited. It’s a beautiful campus, but a little far away for me. I don’t know Modesto. Chabot college I heard is a very good college. I don’t know what the wages are like unfortunately, but you may want to post a new thread asking that question.

I’ve just been admitted to San Francisco State University, so I’ve decided that’s where I’m going to go. I’m excited! I was not sure whether to get a BSN or an ADN, because I’m already 46; but I think SFSU is a very attractive place, although a little far away. CAL-State Hayward is closer to my home, but they’re only going to give their answers in mid-June or July, and students at my colleges (Peralta) mentioned that SFSU is a very neat place and that this is what I should choose.

I was thinking earlier that CAL-State Hayward might be better, because they have a higher passing rate at the NCLEX exam, but someone told me that the reason is that they require their students to have an exam at their university first, before trying the Board State exam. I think CAL-State Hayward is a very good university nevertheless. Contra Costa College seems to be pretty high on the list of success at NCLEX exam too. They did not admit me, because they had some prerequisites I did not meet like two courses in physical education and child development. I was admitted at Merritt college, but heard that their present ADN program is too tough. A student told me that only 17 students are now left in the second year of their ADN program.

    Thanks for responding

I got my MBA at Hayward, so I don’t want to do another long program. I’m looking at ADN programs due to my age (38). That’s so cool that you’ve been accepted. I’m so jealous. Maybe I’ll see you at Valleycare in Livermore sometime.

An MBA, that’s pretty good! If I had one, I think I would go for the nurse practitioner program directly, which is two years like the ADN program. Because you already have a masters degree, I am afraid that SFSU or CAL-State Hayward (?) would not let you apply for another masters degree in nursing. You could always ask if you thought that was a good idea for you. You could apply to Samuel Merritt though. They are expensive, but I was told they’re a very good school, and Kaiser and West Catholic Hospital (I’m not sure what the name is) would reimburse students for their loans.

If you’re unsure, you could apply for both ADN and Master programs (have you thought of physician’s assistant at Stanford/Foothill college, and Samuel Merritt). It’s also a 2 years program.

I forgot to mention in my previous e-mail that Chabot college (ADN program) selects students through a lottery at the end of April (need to apply in January).

All the best to you in your endeavors!

An MBA is not a Master’s degree in nursing, so you would be able to get an MSN. They are not related to each other in any way. Hope that this helps.

    Quote from chad75

sorry about resurecting this old thread but i’m considering moving to the sf area, i am an lpn wanting to fastrack. are there long waiting list for the various fastrack or just general asn/adn programs in sf?

the next rn adn program that starts the soonest for which you could apply is at the city college in san francisco. www.ccsf.edu/
you have to go there on the first day that you are allowed to apply (sometimes in august) – you could go now and get all the info. their 2 year program starts in january 2005. you most likely won’t be able to get any info by phone or to register for nursing by mail either.

for other adn programs, i heard that college of marin is good www.marin .cc.ca.us/
. as well as chabot college in hayward chabot web.clpccd.cc.ca.us/
chabot does a lottery however to select qualified applicants, and they rejected me, because i was not a in-district resident (i think they made a mistake); but they accepted someone else who leaves in alameda.

and contra costa college in san pablo www.contracosta .cc.ca.us

from all the things i heard, and their results at the nclex exams, i do not recommend merritt college in oakland (not to confuse with samuel merritt in oakland, which is a good program).

these may not be the fastest program in your situation, because you say you’re already an lpn; so i don’t know what programs are available in your situation. i believe that for bachelor degrees in nursing, there are faster programs for lpn, so it may be worth it to apply to bachelor programs.

samuel merritt in oakland www.samuelmerritt .edu may still accept applications for the fall 2004, and may have a special program for lpn, i don’t know. samuel merritt is associated with holy names college in oakland, or st mary’s college in moraga where you’d have to take some general education classes (you don’t have to be catholic.) they’re expensive, but good, and i heard that several employers, incl. kaiser and a hospital with a catholic name (catholic west or something like that) offer to reimburse education loans when they hire.

you may also want to check what kind of programs ucsf in san francisco has for lpns at nurseweb.ucsf .edu they’re also expensive, but apparently very good.

the other bachelor in nursing programs that i know are at san francisco state university, where i have been accepted. www.sfsu.edu
and csu hayward www.csuhayward.edu (there is a pre-entrance nln exam to take).

when you apply, make sure to fill out two applications one for the school, and one for the nursing program.

if anyone studied nursing at hayward university or san francisco state university, i’d be interested to know if they liked it or not, and why.

for more info on nursing programs in california, you can go to:

    • Al Shirawi: Entrepreneurship combined with innovation will lead the emirate’s economic growth in the future
    • Bin Bishr: The creative ideas presented support Dubai’s transformation to a global smart city leader

Dubai, UAE: Innovative business ideas of three budding entrepreneurs were awarded by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the conclusion of the Dubai Smartpreneur Competition launched in cooperation with the Smart Dubai Office. The award ceremony was held on the side-lines of the ArabNet Digital Summit 2016 closing at Madinat Jumeirah on Tuesday.

The first prize was presented to Sebastian Stefan for his idea LoadMe focusing on reducing traffic through GPS tracking and smart phone apps and the second prize went to Craig Muyambo for his idea Efhamni (Understand Me), an application designed to bridge the gap between deaf and hearing people while the third prize was bagged by Murshed Mohamed, for his idea “I Want” which is an on-demand platform that helps people buy anything on retailers’ shelves with the push of a button.

The prize cheques were presented by H.E. Majid Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman, Dubai Chamber, and Dr. Aisha Bin Bishr, Director General, Smart Dubai Office, in the presence H.E. Hisham Al Shirawi, 2nd Vice-Chairman, Dubai Chamber, and Head of Tejar Dubai Selection Committee Panel, H.E. In his keynote address, H.E. Hisham Al Shirawi lauded the efforts of the participants in presenting creative and innovative ideas which he said not only support the emirate’s entrepreneurship growth strategy but also Dubai’s efforts in offering smart and innovative services to the business community.

H.E. Al Shirawi further stressed that entrepreneurship and innovation are the bases on which the future growth of the emirate’s economy rest and the participants were quick enough to adopt the concept to base their ideas on the emirate’s innovative strategy of offering smart services.

He also stressed that the winners will now join the Tejar Dubai entrepreneurship development programme launched by Dubai Chamber, which provides the necessary training and guidance to the owners of the ideas to turn their creations into viable commercial projects.

On her part, Dr. Aisha Bin Bishr, Director General, Smart Dubai Office, said: “The competition provided a fitting platform for innovative individuals to think out of the box and come up with fresh ideas which are also in line with the dimensions of the objectives of the Smart Dubai initiative and will go a long way in supporting the emirate’s transformation to a global smart city leader.”

Launched by Dubai Chamber in cooperation with the Smart Dubai Office, the Dubai Smartpreneur Competition is designed with the aim to provide upcoming entrepreneurs the opportunity and inspiration to be part of Dubai’s transformation to a global benchmark smart city.

The competition received 350 entries out of which 48 qualified in the second phase last week and attended two full day workshops on sector-specific training from experts in the field while 10 were shortlisted in the final phase to select the three finalists by the committee of judges at its closing ceremony on Tuesday.

The specialised committee of judges included Ayesha Sultan, Board Member at Smart City – Dubai Holding, Abdulla Ali Al Madani CEO, Corporate Technology Support Services Sector Roads and Transport Authority, and Saeed Alabbar, Director at AESG and Chairman of the Emirates Green Building Council, who assessed the presentations of the 10 shortlisted participants for their innovative ideas before selecting the three winners.

The first three winners get a cash prize and the opportunity to join Tejar Dubai entrepreneurship development programme for a year which will help them turn their business ideas into reality. The competition was open to all UAE-based entrepreneurs and required them to submit their business ideas in line with the Smart Dubai dimensions including smart economy, smart living, smart mobility, smart governance, smart environment, and smart people.

All applications were evaluated based on the following criteria including the problem the business addresses in a large or growing market opportunity, if the idea has a value proposition and identifies customers’ need for the product or service in line with the market and competitive landscape and if it supports one of the Smart Dubai dimensions.

Also, if the team demonstrates passion about their idea, and if they have a thorough and credible execution plan along with the idea’s Business Model, its revenue generation methods as well as its financial growth projections.

Analysts give their top stocks to watch this year

At last investors can put the 2015-16 financial year behind them and concentrate on 2016-17 when Australian companies are expected to start lifting profits once more.

Better still, while the year just ended may have been lacklustre overall for listed companies – and a good deal less than lacklustre for some – the recent reporting season has thrown up several stocks that warrant placement on shareholders’ radar screens.

The year to June 30 was “not great” for corporate profits, in the words of Shane Oliver, head of investment strategy and chief economist at AMP Capital.

Earnings per share tumbled about 8 per cent, driven by a 47 per cent slump in resources profits and a 4 per cent decline in bank profits.

Several companies whose top line is dependent on the health of the Australian economy complained that the drawn-out election campaign dented consumer confidence in the June quarter, which should augur well for the current year.

Hamad Buamim, President and CEO, Dubai Chamber, and Essa Al Zaabi, Senior Vice-President, Institutional Support Sector, Dubai Chamber, and General Coordinator of Tejar Dubai.
