Reliance Jio 4G VoLTE technology: Here s how voice-calls will work

Reliance Jio 4G is now open for all: From VoLTE to LTE to 4G we explain what you’re getting into with Jio service.

Reliance Jio 4G SIM preview offer: From VoLTE to LTE to 4G, all you need to know about the technology. (Source: Reuters)

With Reliance Jio shaking up the market with the announcement of their 4G service, there seems to be a growing confusion among buyers regarding the technology the network will deploy. We have a small guide to help you work through the various terms such as VoLTE, LTE, 4G and the likes so that you know exactly what you’re getting into with the Reliance Jio service.

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE and is a new protocol for transmitting voice data over the LTE network. While 2G and 3G networks are circuit-switch based, 4G or LTE networks utilise Packet Switching. When a call is made over a 2G or a 3G network, a certain amount of network bandwidth is assigned to that call as a pipeline, which does not terminate till the call ends. On a VoLTE network, voice calls are broken up into packets of information, sent over the full data pipeline and then reconstructed at the receiver’s end. The result is that voice information can be carried over a higher bandwidth pipe, resulting in better call quality.

LTE and VoLTE is NOT the same

It is essential to understand that LTE (also referred to as 4G-LTE) is a wholly IP-based communications protocol. Existing carriers have all 2G,3G and 4G setups on their network, allowing data to go through the 4G band while pushing calls through the 2G/3G band. While LTE is the next generation data transmission protocol with higher two-way bandwidth, it is capable of only transmitting data. VoLTE is the way in which a voice call can be converted to digital packets and transmitted over the LTE network. In effect, VoLTE is a subset of the LTE technology.

Reliance Jio’s network is purely LTE, and does not have any 2G and 3G bands and as such, calls made on this network will only be VoLTE based. Therefore, in order to use the feature, you must have a handset which is VoLTE enabled. While VoLTE is baked into most of the modern Qualcomm and several Mediatek SoCs, the feature may not be enabled on the handset and can be done so by means of a software update to be pushed out by the handset manufacturer.

A phone may be able to use the LTE network, but the VoLTE feature is separate and as such, must be enabled. If you have an LTE enabled phone, you can use the data services of the Jio SIM. In order to make calls over the Reliance Jio network, you must either use the sim in a VoLTE enabled phone, or an LTE enabled phone running the JioJoin app (available only on Android phone running Version 4.0 and up).

Its probably not the best to turn off data on your cellphone if you’re on the Reliance Jio network. Since all traffic on the network is running over a data line, disabling data would effectively put the phone in the equivalent of airplane mode. It should be mentioned that Reliance has clarified that data usage towards voice calls will not be counted towards the data allotment of the monthly plans.

HD Calling is being touted as a major feature of the VoLTE saga, but there is a caveat. Calls are in HD only if the parties engaged in a phone call are both on Reliance’s Jio network The call has to originate and terminate on a VoLTE enabled handset. You can still make and receive calls from other networks, but they won’t be in the higher quality standard that you can expect from a VoLTE call.

Medical Health Information Technology Certification Information

Source: *U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Certification Options in Medical and Health Information Technology

Certification for medical records and health information technicians is available from a number of different professional organizations, including the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA). Earning certification is usually optional, but employers may prefer to hire certified technicians, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

    American Health Information Management Association

The AHIMA offers the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) designation. This certification is suitable for all medical and health information technicians, including those who specialize in coding or cancer registry. To qualify to sit for the RHIT exam, a person must have earned an associate’s degree from a health information management program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. Graduates of foreign HIM programs may qualify if the program is accredited by an AHIMA-approved organization.

The RHIT exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions and lasts 3.5 hours. Candidates must submit an application along with transcripts, resume and an application fee. Those who do not pass the exam must wait at least 45 days before retesting. Certification must be renewed every two years by earning a minimum of 20 continuing education units (CEUs) during the 2-year period.

    American Academy of Professional Coders

The AAPC offers several different medical coding certifications, including the Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Professional Coder – Payer (CPC-P) and Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC), as well as a number of different specialty medical coding designations. Each certification exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions and takes five hours and 40 minutes to complete. Although the AAPC does not always have formal requirements to sit for one of their certification exams, candidates are encouraged to have at least an associate’s degree and at least two years of medical coding experience. Certification holders are required to maintain current membership with the AAPC and earn a certain number of CEUs every two years to maintain certification.

    National Cancer Registrars Association

The Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) designation is offered by the NCRA for health information technicians who work with the records of cancer patients. To be eligible to take the certification exam, a person must have an associate’s degree and either experience working in the cancer registry field or a certificate in an NCRA-accredited program. CTR candidates are given 4.5 hours to complete a total of 250 multiple-choice questions. To maintain certification, CTRs must pay an annual maintenance fee and submit CEUs every two years.

Career Outlook for Medical Records and Health Information Technicians

According to the BLS, medical records and health information technicians were predicted to see a 15% growth in employment opportunities from 2014-2024. This above-average growth stemmed from an aging population and a greater need for cancer-related health information services. Medical records and health information technicians earned a median annual salary of $37,110 in 2015, per BLS.

To summarize, certification in medical and health information technology normally isn’t required, but may be preferred by some employers. Certification options exist for general medical health technicians, as well as for those wishing to specialize in coding or a particular area of health care.

TransferWise launches international money transfers via Facebook

The Facebook logo is displayed on their website in an illustration photo taken in Bordeaux, France, February 1, 2017. Regis Duvignau

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Money transfer company TransferWise has launched a new service that allows users to send money internationally through Facebook Inc’s chat application, as competition in the digital payments landscape intensifies.

The London-based startup said on Tuesday that it had developed a Facebook Messenger “chatbot”, or an automated program that can help users communicate with businesses and carry out tasks such as online purchases.

TransferWise’s chatbot enables customers to send money to friends and family to and from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Europe from Facebook Messenger. It can also be used to set up exchange rate alerts.

Facebook already allows its users to send money domestically in the United States via its Messenger app, but has not yet launched similar services internationally. TransferWise said its service will be the first to enable international money transfers entirely within Messenger.

Facebook opened up its Messenger app to developers to create chatbots in April in a bid to expand its reach in customer service and enterprise transactions.

Chatbots have become a hot topic in enterprise technology over the past year because recent advances in artificial intelligence have made them better at interacting. Businesses, including banks, are hoping that they can be used to improve and reduce the cost of their customer service operations.

One of Europe’s most well-known fintech companies, TransferWise was launched in 2011 by Estonian friends Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann out of frustration with the high fees they were being charged by banks for international money transfers.

The company, which is valued at more than $1 billion, is backed by several high profile investors including Silicon Valley venture fund Andreessen Horowitz, Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, and PayPal co-founders Max Levchin and Peter Thiel, through his fund Valar Ventures.

Customers in more than 50 countries send roughly $1 billion through its website every month.

While the TransferWise chatbot is now only available in Facebook Messenger it can be adapted to work with other popular chat services, Scott Miller, head of global partnerships for TransferWise said. He said the service would eventually be extended to work in other countries and money transfer routes that the company operates in.

The launch comes as competition in the mobile payments and international money transfer sectors intensifies. Earlier this month PayPal Holdings Inc announced its U.S. payments application Venmo would be available within popular chat service Slack.

While in January. Ant Financial Services, an affiliate of Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, said it would acquire U.S. money-transfer company MoneyGram, in a deal that is expected to shake up the international payments landscape.
