5 Open Source Business Intelligence Tools
It’s impossible to imagine making good business decisions without the right information to back up the decision making process. Business intelligence (BI) tools help by making it easy to extract and understand the information that you need from the mass of business data that you collect and store. In other words, they can help turn piles of data into meaningful insights that help you run your business. Because the potential business benefits of a good business intelligence tool are so great, it’s not surprising that plenty of big-name vendors such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and SAS provide excellent proprietary business intelligence software — though sometimes at a significant price. Less well-known companies with strong BI offerings include Panorama Software, Tableau Software and Qlik. There are also a large number of powerful open source BI solutions – both free and commercial – which can be used as provided, or as base code which can be customized to suit your organization. These open source tools have typically been adopted by small and medium sized companies rather than large enterprises, but some are gaining acceptance in the large enterprise space.
5 Open Source Business Intelligence Tools
Many companies use business intelligence software from big-name vendors like Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and SAS and/or applications from smaller BI specialists like Qlik and Tableau Software. But it’s worth considering open source BI applications, which can offer low cost, ease of customization and other benefits. We’ve highlighted several open source business intelligence solutions – both free and commercial versions – which can be used as provided, or as base code which can be customized to suit your organization.
Jaspersoft was a top commercial open source software vendor focused on business intelligence, including data visualization, reporting and analytics – until it was purchased by Tibco Software in April.
Its BI software suite, now called Tibco Jaspersoft, is still available in a free community edition, which includes a report designer, a reporting engine, a server repository, report scheduling and mobile BI, along with community forums and a wiki for support.
Available in commercially licensed versions are a cloud-based offering (with pricing starting at less than $1 per hour), as well as more comprehensive Express, Professional and Enterprise editions that include features like interactive visualization and drag-and-drop report designing.
Pentaho offers a free community edition of its business analytics suite, which includes business analytics as well as data integration, a report designer and a marketplace of plugins developed by the community to extend the capabilities of the Pentaho platform.
The company promotes this as an entry-level tool that can be used for testing and evaluation before upgrading to the full commercial product, which includes visual analysis, predictive modeling, dashboards and a mobile element. Download Pentaho Community Edition

4 Hot Open Source Big Data Projects
There’s more — much more — to the Big Data software ecosystem than Hadoop. Here are four open source projects that will help you get big benefits from Big Data.
It’s difficult to talk about Big Data processing without mentioning Apache Hadoop. the open source Big Data software platform. But Hadoop is only part of the Big Data software ecosystem. There are many other open source software projects that are emerging to help you get more from Big Data.
Here are a few interesting ones that are worth keeping an eye on.
Spark bills itself as providing “lightning-fast cluster computing” that makes data analytics fast to run and fast to write. It’s being developed at UC Berkeley AMPLab and is free to download and use under the open source BSD license.
So what does it do? Essentially it’s an extremely fast cluster computing system that can run data in memory. It was designed for two applications where keeping data in memory is an advantage: running iterative machine learning algorithms, and interactive data mining.
It’s claimed that Spark can run up to 100 times faster than Hadoop MapReduce in these environments. Spark can access any data source that Hadoop can access, so you can run it on any existing data sets that you have already set up for a Hadoop environment.
Apache Drill is “a distributed system for interactive analysis of large-scale datasets.”
MapReduce is often used to perform batch analysis on Big Data in Hadoop, but what if batch processing isn’t suited to the task at hand: What if you want fast results to ad-hoc queries so you can carry out interactive data analysis and exploration?
Google developed its own solution to this problem for internal use with Dremel. and you can access Dremel as a service using Google’s BigQuery .
However if you don’t want to use Google’s Dremel on a software-as-a-service basis, Apache is backing Drill as an Incubation project. It’s based on Dremel, and its design goal is to scale to 10,000 servers or more and to be able to process petabytes of data and trillions of records in seconds.
Using D3.js you can create dynamic graphics using Web standards like HTML5, SVG and CSS. For example, you can generate a plain old HTML table from an array of numbers, but more impressively you can make an interactive bar chart using scalable vector graphic from the same data.
That barely scratches the surface of what D3 can do, however. There are dozens of visualization methods — like chord diagrams, bubble charts, node-link trees and dendograms — and thanks to D3’s open source nature, new ones are being contributed all the time.
D3 has been designed to be extremely fast, it supports Big Data datasets, and it has cross-hardware platform capability. That’s meant it has become an increasingly popular tool for showing graphical visualizations of the results of Big Data analysis. Expect to see more of it in the coming months.
HCatalog is an open source metadata and table management framework that works with Hadoop HDFS data, and which is distributed under the Apache license. It’s being developed by some of the engineers at Hortonworks, the commercial organization that’s the sponsor of Hadoop (and which also sponsors Apache).
The idea of HCatalog is to liberate Big Data by allowing different tools to share Hive. That means that Hadoop users making use of a tool like Pig or MapReduce or Hive have immediate access to data created with another tool, without any loading or transfer steps. Essentially it makes the Hive metastore available to users of other tools on Hadoop by providing connectors for Map Reduce and Pig. Users of those tools can read data from and write data to Hive s warehouse.
It also has a command line tool, so that users who do not use Hive can operate on the metastore with Hive Data Definition Language statements.
Other open source big data projects to watch:
Storm. Storm makes it easy to reliably process unbounded streams of data, doing for real-time processing what Hadoop did for batch processing.
Kafka. Kafka is a messaging system that was originally developed at LinkedIn to serve as the foundation for LinkedIn’s activity stream and operational data processing pipeline. It is now used at a variety of different companies for various data pipeline and messaging uses.
Julia. Julia is a high-level, high-performance dynamic programming language for technical computing, with syntax that is familiar to users of other technical computing environments.
Impala. Cloudera Impala is a distributed query execution engine that runs against data stored natively in Apache HDFS and Apache HBase.
Paul Rubens has been covering IT security for over 20 years. In that time he has written for leading UK and international publications including The Economist, The Times, Financial Times, the BBC, Computing and ServerWatch.

Online Tarot Reading
Description of the tarot reading tool
Tarot cards are a highly symbolic deck of cards consisting of 22 Major Arcana cards, and 56 Minor Arcana cards. Arcana means secrets or mysteries, which is why the ability to decipher the symbols is half the gift of the translator. There are also Minor Arcana suits which consist of 4 court cards including the king, queen, knight and page in addition to 10 numbered cards. The card reader usually places them upside down and asks the person receiving the reading to pick cards for a spread , which is a pre-selected pattern of how the cards will be laid out. A spread can be a quick yes or no pattern, a three ace spread, a Celtic spread or any number of other popular ones. After they are laid out the questioner turns over the appropriate number of cards for the spread and then the diviner, or card reader, deciphers them to expose the very mysteries the cards represent. Whether you believe in them or not, they have been, and still remain, a source of fun and fascination for people all over the world and of varying cultures. To learn more about the cards, read our Tarot Cards Meaning article.
Instructions for the tarot reading tool
The following uses a shuffled deck of hidden tarot cards. To do a tarot reading, for yourself or for someone else, you will have to pick 3 cards. The first one represents the person’s past, the second one represents the person’s present and the third one represents its future. The explanation of the results is generated after each pick in the text boxes below. If you want to do an additional reading, click on the button “NEW SESSION” and the deck will be randomly shuffled again. Note: you obviously can’t pick the same card twice.

Air source heat pumps
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home.
An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally.
The benefits of air source heat pumps
- Lower fuel bills, especially if you are replacing conventional electric heating
- potential income through the UK government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
- lower home carbon emissions, depending on which fuel you are replacing
- no fuel deliveries needed
- can heat your home as well as your water
- minimal maintenance required
- can be easier to install than a ground source heat pump.
Unlike gas and oil boilers, heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods. During the winter they may need to be on constantly to heat your home efficiently. You will also notice that radiators won’t feel as hot to the touch as they might do when you are using a gas or oil boiler.
View case studies and examples of homeowners who live in Scotland who have installed an air source heat pump.
How do air source heat pumps work?
Heat from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased, and transfers its higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house. There are two main types of air source heat pump systems.
An air-to-water system distributes heat via your wet central heating system. Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. This makes them more suitable for underfloor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time.
An air-to-air system produces warm air which is circulated by fans to heat your home. They are unlikely to provide you with hot water as well.
Is an air source heat pump suitable for me?
To tell if an air source heat pump is right for you, there are a few key questions to consider:
- Do you have somewhere to put it? You’ll need a place outside your home where a unit can be fitted to a wall or placed on the ground. It will need plenty of space around it to get a good flow of air. A sunny wall is ideal.
- Is your home well insulated? Since air source heat pumps work best when producing heat at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, it’s essential that your home is well insulated and draught-proofed for the heating system to be most efficient.
- What fuel will you be replacing? The system will pay for itself much more quickly if it’s replacing an electricity or coal heating system. Heat pumps may not be the best option for homes using mains gas.
- What type of heating system will you use? Air source heat pumps can perform better with underfloor heating systems or warm air heating than with radiator-based systems because of the lower water temperatures required.
- Is the system intended for a new development? Combining the installation with other building work can reduce the cost of installing the system.
You may also want to consider ground source heat pumps, which use pipes buried in the ground outside to extract heat. If you live in Scotland, we recommend using our Renewables Selector tool to find out which means of generating energy might work best for you.
Costs, savings and financial support
Installing a typical system costs around £7,000 to £11,000. Running costs will vary depending on a number of factors including the size of your home, how well insulated it is and what room temperatures you are aiming to achieve.
How much you can save will depend on what system you use now, as well as what you are replacing it with. Your savings will be affected by:
- Your heat distribution system. If you have the opportunity, underfloor heating can be more efficient than radiators because the water doesn’t need to be so hot. If underfloor heating isn’t possible, use the largest radiators you can. Your installer should be able to advise on this.
- Your fuel costs. You will still have to pay fuel bills with a heat pump because it is powered by electricity, but you will save on the fuel you are replacing.
- Your old heating system. If your old heating system was inefficient, you are more likely to see lower running costs with a new heat pump.
- Water heating. If the heat pump is providing hot water then this could limit the overall efficiency. You might want to consider solar water heating to provide hot water in the summer and help keep your heat pump efficiency up.
- Using controls. Learn how to control the system so you can get the most out of it. You will probably need to set the heating to come on for longer hours, but you might be able to set the thermostat lower and still feel comfortable. Your installer should explain to you how to control the system so you can use it most effectively.
Potential annual savings of installing a standard air source heat pump in an average sized, four-bedroom detached home:
England, Scotland and Wales
Note: The Renewable Heat Incentive is no longer available in Northern Ireland.
You may be eligible to receive payments for the heat you generate using a heat pump through the UK Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
Domestic RHI is no longer available in Northern Ireland – details of the previous scheme can be viewed at NI Direct .
Heat pump systems typically come with a warranty of two to three years. Workmanship warranties for heat pumps can last for up to 10 years, for example through QANW (Quality Assured National Warranties). Many manufacturers also offer options for warranty extensions for a fee. You can expect them to operate for 20 years or more, however they do require regular scheduled maintenance. A yearly check by you and a more detailed check by a professional installer every three to five years should be sufficient.
The installer should leave written details of any maintenance checks you should undertake to ensure everything is working properly. Consult with your supplier for exact maintenance requirements before you commit to installing a heat pump. You are likely to be advised to carry out a yearly check that the air inlet grill and evaporator are free of leaves or other debris. Any plants that have started to grow near the heat pump unit will also need to be removed.
You may also be advised by your installer to check the central heating pressure gauge in your house from time to time. If so, you should be shown how to do this. To prevent the heat pump from freezing in cold winter weather anti-freeze is used. Levels of anti-freeze and its concentration is one of the things that a professional installer will check when he comes to service your heat pump. If your heat pump has external refrigeration pipes, (very unusual for a domestic system) these will need to be serviced annually by a refrigeration engineer.
Before starting, the developer must apply to the relevant planning authority for a determination as to whether the prior approval of the authority will be required for the siting and external appearance of the air source heat pump. The application needs to be accompanied by a range of other information and several other conditions apply.

Nmap and Zenmap (the graphical front end) are available in several versions and formats. Recent source releases and binary packages are described below. Older version (and sometimes newer test releases) are available from the dist directory (and really old ones are in dist-old ). For the more security-paranoid (smart) users, GPG detached signatures and SHA-1 hashes for each release are available in the sigs directory (verification instructions ). Before downloading, be sure to read the relevant sections for your platform from the Nmap Install Guide. The most important changes (features, bugfixes, etc) in each Nmap version are described in the Changelog. Using Nmap is covered in the Reference Guide. and don’t forget to read the other available documentation. particularly the new book Nmap Network Scanning.
Nmap users are encouraged to subscribe to the Nmap-hackers mailing list. It is a low volume (7 posts in 2015), moderated list for the most important announcements about Nmap, Insecure.org, and related projects. You can join the 122,795 current subscribers (as of September 2016) by submitting your email address here:
You can also get updates from our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Nmap is distributed with source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License, with certain clarifications and exceptions noted in the copyright page.
Source Code Distribution (in case you wish to compile Nmap yourself)
This is the traditional compile-it-yourself format. The Nmap tarball compiles under Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and many UNIX platforms (Solaris, Free/Net/OpenBSD, etc.) It includes Zenmap, the GUI frontend. Nmap is now offered in bzip2 format as well as traditional gzip.
Detailed Linux/BSD/Solaris compilation instructions and options are provided here. though this usually does the trick:
If you are compiling Nmap anyway, you might prefer to get the very latest code from our SVN source code repository rather than downloading a tarball here.
Microsoft Windows binaries
Please read the Windows section of the Install Guide for limitations and installation instructions for the Windows version of Nmap. You can choose from a self-installer (includes dependencies and also the Zenmap GUI) or the much smaller command-line zip file version. We support Nmap on Windows 7 and newer, as well as Windows Server 2008 and newer. We also maintain a guide for users who must run Nmap on earlier Windows releases..
Note: The version of Npcap included in our installers may not always be the latest version. If you experience problems or just want the latest and greatest version, download and install the latest Npcap release.
The Nmap executable Windows installer can handle Npcap installation, registry performance tweaks, and decompressing the executables and data files into your preferred location. It also includes the Zenmap graphical frontend. Skip all the complexity of the Windows zip files with a self-installer:
We have written post-install usage instructions. Please notify us if you encounter any problems or have suggestions for the installer.
For those who prefer the command-line zip files (Installation Instructions ; Usage Instructions ), they are still available. The Zenmap graphical interface is not included with these, so you need to run nmap.exe from a DOS/command window. Or you can download and install a superior command shell such as those included with the free Cygwin system. Also, you need to run the Npcap and Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package installers which are included in the zip file. The main advantage is that these zip files are a fraction of the size of the executable installer:
Linux RPM Source and Binaries
Many popular Linux distributions (Redhat, Mandrake, Suse, etc) use the RPM package management system for quick and easy binary package installation. We have written a detailed guide to installing our RPM packages. though these simple commands usually do the trick: You can also download and install the RPMs yourself:
Mac OS X Binaries
Nmap binaries for Mac OS X (Intel x86) are distributed as a disk image file containing an installer. The installer allows installing Nmap, Zenmap, Ncat, and Ndiff. The programs have been tested on Intel computers running Mac OS X 10.8 and later. See the Mac OS X Nmap install page for more details. Users of PowerPC (PPC) Mac machines, which Apple ceased selling in 2006, should see this page instead for support information.
Other Operating Systems
Many other operating systems support Nmap so well that I have no need to create and distribute binary packages myself. You can choose to use the packages below, or compile the source distribution. which is often newer. We have created installation pages for the following platforms:

Baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. and Kelly Ripken are divorced after nearly three decades
After almost 30 years of marriage, Hall of Famer and former Baltimore Oriole Cal Ripken Jr. and Kelly Ripken have divorced.
Her attorney says the split was finalized Thursday morning in the Baltimore County circuit court. Details about the settlement — Cal Ripken, 55, owns a minor-league team and a chain of sports complexes bearing his name and is reportedly worth $75 million — will not be made public since records were sealed and the division of property was outlined in a private contract.
The pair wed in 1987 and have two children, Rachel, 26, and Ryan, 22. Ripken was a homegrown baseball star known for a low-key public persona, and his wife was a presence at Orioles games and a fixture at his side through decades of charity events and appearances. Together, they projected an image of a wholesome, low-drama couple — a rarity in the volatile world of pro sports.
“Kelly has been a great mother to two fabulous children and a wonderful, faithful wife for the duration of the parties’ relationship, which lasted more than 30 years,” her attorney, Sanford Ain, said in a statement. “This is a difficult time for her and she asks that her privacy and the privacy of her children be respected.”
A spokesman for Cal Ripken said his client would have no comment on the matter. Cal Ripken, whose stamina earned him the moniker the “Iron Man,” broke Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-games record in 1995 when he played his 2,131st straight game. He’s been renting a home in Annapolis, his spokesman confirmed, a development that was first reported by the local Capital Gazette .
Ain says the pair have been separated for some time and that Kelly Ripken, 57, “looks forward to the next chapter ” in which she plans to focus on philanthropic efforts, particularly those related to women’s health. Kelly Ripken, who has publicly discussed being diagnosed 30 years ago with Graves’ disease, a thyroid condition, is the co-chair of Johns Hopkins annual women’s health conference and is the namesake of the Kelly G. Ripken program for thyroid patients at Johns Hopkins.
What is ‘Escrow’
Escrow is a legal concept in which a financial instrument or an asset is held by a third party on behalf of two other parties that are in the process of completing a transaction. The funds or assets are held by the escrow agent until it receives the appropriate instructions or until predetermined contractual obligations have been fulfilled. Money, securities. funds, and other assets can all be held in escrow .
When parties are in the process of completing a transaction, there may come a time when it is only interesting to move forward for one party if it knows with absolute certainty that the other party will be able to fulfill its obligations. This is where the use of escrow comes into play.
For example, a company selling goods internationally wants to be certain that it will get paid when the goods reach their destination. Conversely, the buyer wants to pay for the goods only if they arrive in good condition. The buyer can place the funds in escrow with an agent and give irrevocable instructions to disburse them to the seller once the goods arrive. This way, both parties are safe, and the transaction can proceed.
Escrow transactions are also frequent in the real estate market and the stock market.
Escrow and Real Estate
Escrow accounts are used in real estate transactions so that the buyer can perform due diligence on his potential acquisition while assuring the seller of its capacity to close on the purchase. For example, an escrow account can be used for the sale of a house. If there are conditions to the sale, such as the passing of an inspection, the buyer and seller may agree to use escrow. In this case, the buyer of the property deposits the payment amount for the house in an escrow account held by a third party. This assures the seller – in the process of allowing the house to be inspected – that the buyer is capable of making payment. Once all of the conditions to the sale are satisfied, the escrow transfers the payment to the seller, and the title is transferred to the buyer.
Escrow and the Stock Market
Stocks, especially those of public companies, are often issued in escrow. This means that while the shareholder is the real owner of the stock, he is limited in his rights to dispose of it. For example, executives who receive stock as a bonus to their compensation often have to wait for an escrow period to pass before they can sell the stock. This is used as a tactic to retain top executives and protects the stock’s market price.
