Social Networking Sites Defined

Web-based social networking services offer a way for individuals or groups to create a profile of themselves, then share that profile with other members of the social networking community.

When people talk about a computer network they generally are referring to a group of computer systems linked together. Within the network each computer system or device is called a node. The idea behind a social network is similar, only the nodes are generally individuals, groups or organizations.

What Are Social Networking Sites

Social networking services, also called social networking sites (SNS), are designed to build upon interactions to create communities of people online, and provide the required software to do this. Web-based social networking spaces offer a way for individuals or groups to create profiles and share images, videos, thoughts, and other types of posts with other members of the social networking space. The specific site also provides a variety of ways for users to communicate with others within that network, such as instant messaging and chat rooms, e-mail or site mail (used only use through the service), notes and blogs, file sharing, forums or other types of discussion groups, videos, and so on.

Privacy on Social Sites

Many social networking sites today do offer some form of privacy by allowing its users to choose a public, private or limited viewing profile. On some sites two users must both agree to be “friends” before they can see their respective profile information. Other sites may not offer this, but will provide options that let you control how much information can be viewed by other members of the service.

People use social networking sites for many reasons. Some may want an easy way to keep in touch with family and friends, some may use it for business or job searches. Even still others may use it for dating or just to find like-minded individuals online.

The Origins of Social Networking Sites

One of the first social networking Web sites, launched in 1997, was SixDegrees.com. This site started the trend of enabling users to create personal profiles and make lists of their friends. Two years after the fall of SixDegrees, LiveJournal offered authors options to add a list of friends to their profile page. Other early social networking sites include Friendster and online dating service Ryze. MySpace launched in 2003. However, the site didn’t start drawing the attention of the masses until well into 2004, due largely in part to MySpace changes that allowed teenagers to join the social network.

Social networking and Security Concerns

Like all Internet technologies, social networking sites also come with their fair share of security concerns, mostly privacy issues. Each social networking service offers its own privacy policy, and it is important to carefully read the policy before creating a membership and adding a profile. Not all network traffic is the same, and having a router that can identify and prioritize traffic makes for a much more efficient network. Quality of Service (QoS) is an advanced feature that can prioritize Internet applications and minimize interruptions in service when your broadband connection is busy.

For instance, many companies use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection. A router with QoS control can differentiate between data packets used during a phone conversation and those being used to download a file.

This is important because when network traffic becomes congested, data packets get dropped. Dropped packets during a file download just means a slightly longer wait for the file. But dropped packets during a phone conversation results in poor voice quality or fragmented conversations ( Can you hear me now? ). Some routers support automatic QoS, while others have to be configured manually. In some cases you can configure data priority based on a specific application, Ethernet LAN Port, or even specific MAC addresses.

RADIUS Server Support

One of the shortcomings to using WEP, WPA or WPA2 to secure your wireless small business network is that these protocols use a passphrase-generated key to encrypt the wireless traffic traveling between your PC and the router. While this level of encryption might be adequate for most people, small businesses could add an additional layer of security to their wireless networks by incorporating a RADIUS server into their small business network environment.

The job of a RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service) server is to improve WLAN security by requiring users to authenticate to a server before establishing a connection to the wireless network. Not all routers support this feature, but those that do typically refer to it as Enterprise-class wireless security.

Maintaining your own RADIUS server might be too much of an undertaking for some, but there are a number of low-cost RADIUS services where the server and the authentication list it holds are remotely hosted.

Content Filtering /Site Blocking

One of the greatest challenges to a small business is to keep their employees focused and not visiting sites that could damage the company. For example, employees might inadvertently download virus infected software, or perhaps they might visit gambling or pornography websites.

A router with built-in content filtering lets you limit employee access to these sites. Routers are equipped with these today, some more advanced than others. Some content filters require a subscription service to automatically update the list of restricted sites and denies users access to them based on the category the site falls into. Other routers let you block access to either specific sites or you can block sites which contain specific Keywords. While not as sophisticated as the aforementioned subscription service, it is better than nothing.

While you might not need to block every site, being able to disable access to Facebook and Twitter alone could noticeably increase productivity. Should a user attempt to access a restricted site, they will receive a message from the router letting them know that it is not permitted and the network administrator will be automatically notified of the attempt.

You start by creating a personal LinkedIn account and profile.

However, networking on LinkedIn is much different. You won t find members posting cat videos or pictures of what they made for dinner. LinkedIn is a site for professionals, so everything is geared toward careers and business. As you build your profile and seek out connections, endorsements, and recommendations, you ll want to be professional.

Creating Your LinkedIn Profile

All you need to get started is to create a LinkedIn login. Using just the basic free services is sufficient for many home business owners and it gets you features such as:

Once you sign up for a LinkedIn account, either free or paid, you can create your own professional profile. Remember, this is a professional-minded website, so it’s important that information in your profile represents your business or career.
