The Granary

Our Team

Chef Timothy Rattray

Chef Timothy Rattray’s passion for good food began at a young age. Watching his mother in the kitchen fostered the appreciation for culinary tradition and willingness to experiment that Timothy incorporates into his cooking style today.

Alex Rattray

Brewer Alex Rattray got his first real taste of craft beer while studying abroad in London, England. In between classes, there was always time for a visit to the local pub to sample the ales on draft. This experience, along with a visit to the iconic Guinness Brewery in Dublin, Ireland, set his eyes on quality beer for good.

Learn more about

The story of our restaurant has to start with our location. The house at 602 Avenue A was built by a man named Ernst Charles Mueller. Ernst Mueller, a German immigrant, moved to San Antonio in the late 1800s and became the Chief Cooper at the Pearl Brewery. He was invited to San Antonio by his friend, Ignatz Hrovat, who had assumed the position of Brewmaster at the Pearl Brewery.

Wedding Invitation Mueller Family Pearl Brewery

Soon after Ernst Mueller arrived in San Antonio he married another German immigrant named Agatha Brun on June 6, 1906. Agatha Brun was Ignatz Hrovat’s sister-in-law so the two long time friends, Ignatz and Ernest, were now brothers-in-law. The wedding ceremony took place right in Ignatz Hrovat’s home at 606 Avenue A which was just across from the Pearl Brewery. The two couples soon became neighbors as the Muellers built and moved in next door at 602 Avenue A, where our restaurant currently resides.

The house the Muellers built was considered to be quite large at that time and they soon started a family of four. All four children were born in the front bedroom of the house; those were the days when doctors actually made house visits.

Mueller Family in front of house Pearl Brewery

Lucille, the oldest of the Mueller’s children, grew up and married a man named Herman Wolf. They continued living in San Antonio and their children Ralph and Herman Wolf Jr. still live here in

The Mueller’s twin boys, Roy and Roland, grew up to serve in the United States military and fought in World War II. They both returned to San Antonio after the war to settle down and Roland lived in 602 Avenue A looking after his mother, Agatha Mueller, for many years.

Twins Roy and Roland Mueller Pearl Brewery

Two of the Mueller’s grandsons, Herman Wolf and Ralph Wolf, still live here in San Antonio and we have had the pleasure of getting to know them. They speak of great memories of their own joyful time here in “Oma’s Haus” as they called it growing up. They speak specifically of memories of their grandmother, Agatha, creating fantastic meals for Christmas and Thanksgiving.

The whole house would be filled from the porch to the living room with family and good food. They also seem to recall beer being consumed in the house, even during Prohibition! The house at 602 Avenue A remained in the Mueller family all the way up until 2004. At that time the house was sold along with the rest of the brewery to be transformed into what is now known as simply The Pearl. We feel a great privilege and honor to be able to carry on the tradition of family and great food that clearly was a mainstay in this house beginning over a century ago. We hope that you can share in this experience and enjoy impeccable food and drink, and make some memories of your own when you come to visit us at The Granary.

Twins Roland and Roy Mueller serving in World War II Pearl Brewery

The original Pearl Brewery was founded in 1883 as the second brewery established in San Antonio. When it was first established the brewery was known as the San Antonio Brewing Company and retained that name until 1952 when it was officially changed to the Pearl Brewing Company named after its flagship beer. In 1886 the first kegs and barrels of the ubiquitous Pearl beer were rolling off the production line and into local bars and restaurants. The recipe for Pearl beer was formulated in Germany by the Kaiser Beck Brewery (Beck Beer) and was given the name “Pearl” because the brew master thought the bubbles in the head of the beer resembled sparklingly pearls.

Agatha Brun Mueller Pearl Brewery

Pearl Lager anchored the brewery and helped it to become the largest brewery in Texas before prohibition. When Prohibition was enacted in 1919 it was a death sentence for most breweries across America, but the leaders of Pearl got creative and survived the 13 years of Prohibition by venturing into the food and creamery business as well as by selling sodas and near beer. Before Prohibition there were over 2,500 breweries in the United States, by the time Prohibition was repealed there were only about 600 left and that number continued to drop as breweries began to consolidate in the post Prohibition market place.

Pearl continued its previous growth after Prohibition and became a national brand, competing heavily with San Antonio’s other local brewery the Lone Star Brewery. Eventually the Pearl fell on hard times while trying to compete with the larger Anhueser Busch and Miller breweries and In 1985 the brewery was purchased by the Pabst Brewing Company. Pearl Lager was still being produced at the brewery until 2001 when Pabst closed down all beer production at the facility for good.

Christmas in the living room Mueller House Pearl Brewery

The property sat vacant for several months and most locals feared that the historic site would be bull dozed. However, in a bright turn of events the entire 22 acre property was purchased in 2001 by the locally based Silver Ventures investment company. That purchase began the amazing transformation that is still in the works today as the Pearl becomes a live, work, and play community filled with exceptional restaurants, retail shops, beautiful lofts and work spaces. At The Granary we feel very privileged to be able to be a part of the great things happening at the Pearl.

Emergency Water Removal – Carpet Cleaning – 6669 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Norcross, GA, United

I had theses guys out back on Thanksgiving 2014, when my sewer backed up. I had a mess that I would not wish on anyone to clean up from sewage. My plumber recommended them. After talking to John, he had his guy here within one hour. He accessed the situation and had a clean up crew here within the hour, and when i say clean up crew. I MEAN CLEAN UP CREW, THEY GUYS WERE UNBELIEVABLE, AND DID I MENTION IT WAS ON THANKSGIVING DAY. I would give these guys more stars but five is all I am allotted. I would recommend them to anyone. THANK YOU EWR FOR HELPING ME IN MY TIME OF DISTRESS.

Horrible would be a compliment. These are scam artists at work. Promise services they don t deliver, make mistakes to cost you more money, and then at the end tag on extra hours and services to the bill that were never completed. Steer far away.

EWR was called to our house by a plumber who fixed our leaking garbage disposal because their was a lot of standing water under the kitchen sink. Bradley of EWR was quick to show up and get things moving to help clean up the leaking water under the kitchen sink. Our problem came more so after when they tried to set up AYS to finish the job and get our damanged sink cabinet restored. It never happened and there s a review on their site as well. My beef with EWR is that they say that they will help to start and ensure your job is complete with full restoration. Once they were done we got a bill and had to pay within 10 days even though our job was not completed and they said Best of Luck with getting the sink restored. Looking at the invoice, they try and charge you an exorbitant amount for equipment and set up fees that were beyond what was actually done. Their reasoning was b.s. and said it was generated by a computer program. How are you going to charge 3 hours for take down of equipment when they were here 15 mins. Better going with a different company overall than this one. They feed you so much b.s. to seal the deal then leave you hanging.

We used this company because of water damage in the basement bathroom. Emergency Water Removal was recommended by Allgood Plumbing, the company that repaired the piping damage. They showed up the same day and the insurance deductible was required prior to EWR s installation of their equipment to dry the water damage and to remove damaged insulation, wood, and etc. The water also damaged the carpet in the hallway outside of the bathroom. One of EWR s blowers failed and after notifying the project manager, they promptly replaced it. Once all was dry and the units were picked up, we noticed the area where the blower failed left a greasy spot on the carpet. I called the project manager, Stacey Zanders, on several occasions and left messages, but he didn t return any of my calls. He always responded while his equipment was in our home! I then called the 866-971-5675 number, spoke to Mike, who said he would send someone out that same day. No one showed up. The company EWR recommended to restore the damage, AYS Restoration, came to give a quote, however, they did not send that quote and will no longer respond to me. We are left with a torn apart bathroom, damaged carpet–including a spot EWR cut to take with them–and no one to repair it. I wouldn t recommend this company or the restoration company to anyone. Bad customer service and no guarantee of their work.

Holiday hours not verified. Please call to confirm this business’ hours on 29 May, Memorial Day.

Ruff Roofers – 51 Photos – Roofing – 1420 Knecht Ave, Baltimore, MD –

#

1420 Knecht Ave
Baltimore. MD 21227
(410) 242-2400

I highly recommend Ruff Roofers. I had a very difficult job combining a regular shingle roof with damage to the substructure and the replacement of a large metal roof. All was handled admirably with few issues. Those few issues were addressed professionally and immediately. Ryan was fantastic to deal with. All calls were returned within minutes. These are the folks to use.

WOW! Never have I been more pleased with the professionalism, customer service, attention to detail and love for people. I ve never felt more secure or safe after having such a secure roof now. Raise the Ruff Roofers!

I used Ruff Roofers for our roofing job two years ago. They also replaced our skylights. I was so please with the work I hired them again. Recently the fascia on the front of our house was damaged in a wind storm. Called them and within a week the job was done! Great company and great people. Thank you Ruff Roofers!

I get to be the first to review? Awesome! After suffering under (quite literally) a horrible, leaky roof installed about ten years ago by a shyster-y fly-by-night roofer who spent the years of our warranty lying to us and finally not returning phone calls, we decided to bite the (expensive) bullet and hire a reputable roofer to replace the roof on our townhouse. So, the short answer is you get what you pay for. Ruff was a spectacular company to work with. Kevin, our estimator and project manager, was polite, prompt, honest, and took the time to explain EVERYTHING. We had tons of questions and were clearly roof-shy, and he was super patient with us throughout the process. Once we saw the estimate and managed to catch our breath and pick ourselves up off the floor, we signed on the contract. Now, we had a rubber membrane roof installed instead of the usual tar roof that you see on most townhouses in Baltimore. But let s be clear here: the estimate was three times more than our last roof cost, and twice as expensive as a national chain contractor. It was Not. Cheap. At. All. Really, it s a credit to Kevin and the rest of the people at Ruff that we had such a good vibe from them that we decided to pay for the right people, and get the right roof. After all, it s your house! Amirite. Anyway, the installation was just as wonderful as the estimating process. We were introduced to the job foreman and the supervisor. We were given everyone s cell numbers. They handled all the permitting and inspections, even closing the street one day. The crew arrived promptly each morning, worked the full day, and cleaned the site completely before they left. The work they did was SPECTACULAR, and if I didn t know that for myself, Kevin and the foreman walked me through every phase of the job so I could inspect the work myself, ask questions, and understand what was being done and why. There was extra repointing to be done; they showed me exactly why, and what was going to be done. Part of the sub-roof had to be replaced: again, they showed me exactly where and why. This is how a contractor should be. It was a fantastic experience start to finish. Even afterwards, Ruff has been great to work with. They rushed the invoice through their accounting department, so we had documentation for our refinancing, and then have been exceedingly patient with us as we finish up with our re-fi. I couldn t ask for better. Oh, and post-hurricane Sandy? The roof is on tight, with not even the hint of a leak.

I m sure that they do excellent work, but their estimate was significantly higher than the other estimates that we received. Very expensive. Edit: Apparently there was a mis-communication. We ended up going with Ruff Roofers. They did a great job and our roof doesn t leak anymore.

Haven t had work done yet but Emily was kind and knowledgable and said they would set up a consult right away. She assured me if it wasn t something they could help with they would connect me with a company they work closely with that would be able to do the work! Professional friendly can t wait for my estimate!

Ruff Roofers just finished my new roof today and it looks amazing. the crew cleaned up all the debris and nails from the old roof. They finished the job in less than 12 hours. I will recommend Ruff Roofers to anyone.

Department of State Hospitals – Patton

HISTORY

The Department of State Hospitals-Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital located in Patton, CA, in San Bernardino County. DSH-Patton was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.

PATIENT POPULATION

The hospital currently operates approximately 1,527 beds. The commitment categories of patients treated at DSH-Patton are described below:

Incompetent to Stand Trial (PC 1370)
Felony and misdemeanor defendants found incompetent by a court are placed in a state hospital where the focus of treatment is to help them regain trial competency and return them to court so they may be adjudicated on their pending charges. Those patients who are unable to be restored to competency within a three (3) year time period are returned to the court to determine future status and may be recommitted civilly pursuant to WIC 5008, as a Murphy Conservatee.

Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act
These patients are treated under a conservatorship agreement. Conservatorships are for severely disabled individuals who represent a danger to themselves or others due to mental illness. They have not been charged with a crime, but are instead referred by local community mental health programs through involuntary civil commitment procedures pursuant to the LPS Act. Those whose psychiatric conditions require a higher level of care and cannot be treated in locked facilities or board-and-care homes are sent to a state hospital for treatment. LPS patients leave state hospitals when their county of residence places them in a different facility, or home with their families, or they have successfully petitioned the court to remove the conservatorship.

Mentally Disordered Offenders (Penal Code Section 2962/2972)
Parolees who committed one of a specified list of crimes and who were treated for a severe mental disorder connected to their original crime can be committed to a state hospital as a condition of parole for a period not to exceed the length of their parole term. If the person still requires treatment at the end of their parole term, they may be civilly committed under PC2972 if it is determined that they are a substantial danger to others. These commitments last for one year and may be renewed annually by the court. The focus of treatment for this population involves helping the patient increase their ability to safely and effectively manage the symptoms associated with their mental illness.

Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (PC 1026)
Persons judged by the court to be guilty of a crime, but not guilty because they were insane at the time of the crime are committed to a state hospital for treatment for a period equal to the maximum sentence for their most serious offense, subordinate offenses and enhancements. The ultimate goal is for the patient to reintegrate into the community with an increased awareness of their role within society and to take responsibility for personal and public safety. The focus of treatment for this population involves helping the patient development insight into their mental illness and how the symptoms of mental illness led to the commission of a crime. Further, the patient must also demonstrate the ability to safely and effectively manage the symptoms associated with their mental illness.

Sexually Violent Predators (Welfare and Institutions Code 6602 6604)
Individuals who are convicted of a legislatively defined set of sex offenses who complete their prison sentences are evaluated by DSH or independent evaluators. Those that meet Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) criteria receive a probable cause hearing and are placed in a state hospital pending full commitment (WIC 6602). A trial confirming SVP status can result in commitment to a state hospital for an indeterminate period (WIC 6604). SVPs can petition annually for release, be recommended for outpatient status by DSH practitioners, or be determined to no longer meet SVP criteria.

The patient population breakdown for DSH-Patton as of 11/7/2016 is listed below. The data below includes patients who are not in the facility because of a court appearance or who are at a general acute care hospital to receive other medical treatment.

HOSPITAL STAFF

Approximately 2,700 employees work at DSH-Patton providing around-the-clock care, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation therapists, psychiatric technicians, registered nurses, registered dieticians and other clinical and administrative staff. There are approximately 349 different job classifications at the facility, including hospital police, kitchen staff, custodial staff, warehouse workers, groundskeepers, information technology staff, plant operations staff, spiritual leaders, and other clinical and administrative staff.

TREATMENT AND PROGRAMS

The Trial Competency Program is for patients admitted to the hospital under Penal Code (PC) 1370 as Incompetent to Stand Trial. These patients receive a specialized program of treatment which is designed to specifically help the patient gain the knowledge and skills necessary to return to court. The goal is for the patient to understand court proceedings and effectively participate in their defense.

The focus of treatment for our Mentally Disordered Offender (MDO) and Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGI) population emphasizes the potential for each patient to learn new skills and adaptive coping mechanisms to enhance the quality of the patient s life at the hospital and prepare them for eventual transfer to Community Outpatient Treatment (C.O.T.). Other goals are to motivate patients for treatment, develop greater self-autonomy and independence, and the mastery of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) skills and self-discipline.

All treatment programs at DSH-Patton utilize the recovery philosophy offering a broad spectrum of treatment, while fully endorsing the hospital s mission to provide comprehensive clinical services within the context of a biopsychosocial rehabilitation model within an environment of safety and security for all patients, staff and the community in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.

COMMUNITY

Approximately half of Patton s staff members live in the local cities of Highland, San Bernardino, Redlands and Colton. Other staff members reside largely within a 70 mile radius. DSH-Patton partners with San Bernardino Valley College and Hacienda La Puente Adult Education.
