Accredited Online Construction Management Degree Guide for 2015

As a construction manager, you will be involved in various administrative, business and managerial aspects of building projects. This can include selecting a crew of workers and architects, choosing building materials and making sure that your project stays within its budget and schedule. There are several different educational pathways including a certificate, a two-year associate degree, a four-year bachelor s degree and even a two-year master s degree. Although the specific curriculum for each type of program differs, common core courses cover topics like construction site safety and project management.

The construction manager is often the key leadership figure in a building project, both on the ground and in the office. They are typically responsible for project budgets, payrolls, construction methods, collaboration with engineers and architects, compliance with building codes and much more.

As a construction manager, you will have to select a team of architects, contractors and trade workers for your projects. You must also coordinate the activities of these different types of workers and ensure that progress on your projects stays on schedule. This often requires you to recognize and eliminate any factors that might slow the project time.

TABLE of CONTENTS

Check the Guide to Accreditation in Higher Education to learn more about accreditation and how to determine if the program you select meets the necessary standards.

Degrees

Coursework

Some of the most common classes that you can expect to have in an associate or bachelor s degree construction management program include:

  • Construction Project Management offers methods and techniques for preparing accurate cost estimates for building construction projects. You will learn practical strategies to help you manage and coordinate all the different types of specialists who are involved in construction projects.
  • Construction Safety deals with accident prevention, essential in the construction industry, so you will find this course on almost every construction management curriculum. You will learn how to identify common construction-site hazards, use standard building safety techniques and comply with building codes and regulatory requirements.
  • Construction Management Internships usually require you to work in the field at a building construction office. Internships usually require students to assist a professional construction manager with common tasks like scheduling, cost estimating, project planning and contract administration.

Certificate in Construction Management

These education programs are usually for students who already have some hands-on experience in construction management. In addition to certificate programs that are available through traditional construction management schools, professional associations like the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) also offer certificate programs.

  • Credit hours/length of study: 9-18 months
  • Employment prospects: entry-level construction management positions

Associate Degree in Construction Management

You will find most construction management associate degree programs at two-year community colleges and technical colleges. Although there are many schools that still offer an associate in construction management, you should be aware that an increasing number of employers now view a bachelor s degree in construction management as the entry-level degree for this profession.

  • Credit hours/length of study: two years
  • Employment prospects: entry-level construction management positions

Bachelor s Degree in Construction Management

Schools that offer a four-year bachelor s degree in construction management train students for effective leadership on a construction site.

  • Credit hours/length of study: four years
  • Coursework: construction management, construction practices, legal liabilities and requirements of building projects

Master s Degree in Construction Management

Junior construction managers who already have several years of work experience are some of the most common students who pursue construction management training at the masters level.

  • Credit hours/length of study: two years
  • Employment prospects: senior or more advanced construction management jobs

4 Effective and Natural DIY Drain Cleaners

Carpet cleaner san antonioHaving a clogged sink begs the old chestnut about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. There are a lot of things that should never go down a drain, especially if you have a septic system. To avoid clogs to begin with, you have to avoid allowing food particles, grease, and hair from going down the drain. It’s helpful to have a small piece of wire mesh over your drains to catch food or hair particles. Just be sure to clean the mesh regularly or it will start to smell.

Now, for a dose of reality, no one is perfect. We have a lazy moment, or the kids are washing the dishes and aren’t paying attention, or we get too busy to notice all that hair in the tub. Sooner or later, you’ll end of with a clogged drain.

I have two drains that tend to clog more often in my house, the tub and the laundry sink. The tub drain gets clogged with hair and body care products. My washing machine drains via a plastic pipe into a laundry sink so fibers and lint build up in the drain.

The problem with commercial drain cleaners is they corrode pipes, are bad for septic systems, are toxic to ground water, and they can damage the materials that your sink or tub are made of. I recently had to change the drain and fixtures on my bathroom sink due to corrosion from commercial cleaners. After that experience, I decided to try non-toxic and far less corrosive methods for clearing pipes.

Before you try a DIY drain cleaner

It’s best to remember to use your DIY drain cleaners routinely – before the clogs happen. When you are trying a DIY drain cleaner, it will likely take longer than a commercial drain cleaner. You also may need to repeat your efforts more than once. Many DIY drain cleaners will take up to an hour to work.

Just like in the Heimlich maneuver, look first to see if you can actually see the clog. It’s not a fun task, but put on your rubber gloves and dig the hair and goop out first. You may also want to try plunging the drain and running hot water alternately a couple of times. If the clog is minor, that may be all you need to do.

Baking soda, the top DIY drain cleaner

The most commonly used DIY drain cleaner is using one cup of baking soda and one cup of cider vinegar. The intense foaming action, followed by running plenty of hot water, is good routine maintenance. I have to admit I was surprised the first time I saw the drain pop open after trying this. The tub drain was still pretty slow, so I repeated the method.

Baking soda with lemon juice

Lemon juice (one cup) is a little more costly than cider vinegar, but it smells a lot better and works just as well as vinegar. You may want to use this mixture in your kitchen sink simply for the better smell. Again run plenty of hot water after the baking soda and lemon juice foam up for a few minutes.

I found this formula, ¼ C. salt, ¼ C. Borax, and ½ C. vinegar on Sage Simple. I tried the mixture (followed by plenty of hot water) in my laundry sink and found that it took a while, but did clear the drain.

Most clogs develop due to various types of fats and oils that get cold in the pipe (think bacon grease) and solidify. Sometimes just using a kettle of boiling water will clear the clog. Boiling water can also be used with the above mixtures. However, take care to pour directly into the drain to avoid damaging plastics or cracking porcelain.

Classes of this nature could tend to be dry, the instructor did a great job of presenting the information in an interesting manner. I took the course on line and they made sure that we had ways of communicating questions to the opresenter.

I had to come here to attend a 3 day course to get my 440 license for my job. Before coming here, all my other coworkers who had previously attended had tons of great things to say about this place. They said it would be especially great if we had Diana (who is the president of the school) as our teacher. Lucky for us, myself and my coworker who attended together got to be in her class. She really does a good job at making what could be a dry, boring experience into something actually funny and entertaining. She knows her stuff and does a great job at teaching thoroughly. Even has tons of funny stories to share. I learned a lot. Just wish we had time to ask more questions sometimes, but she kept us on a very packed schedule (although she was quite generous with allocating breaks). Two tips: bring a jacket, it s freezing I m here. And bring your own coffee if you palm on drinking anyway. The coffee they have in the break room so pretty bad. Even Diana herself warned us. Overall great experience and would recommend it to others

7 Spring St
San Francisco. CA 94104
(415) 777-9992

Coming back from an injury when it seems nothing is fair in life, the people of San Francisco makes everything easier. I moved up here without knowing what to expect but the transition was one I wasn t expecting. It s strange I have to get used to people actually helping me. Thank you SF health.

SHORT. you re screwed if you had a city MRA and did the right thing and enrolled in Covered CA (Obamacare). two stars for friendly, very sympathetic staff. LONG. staff is friendly, able to explain new Covered CA changes, and enrolled me (Thanks Kersti!); Otherwise a very frustrating and unhelpful experience. Waited weeks for an appointment, which was scheduled too late to change my Covered CA enrollment. Funds deposited by my employer in November were placed in a city general fund instead of my preexisting MRA and are not available for my Nov Dec premiums or co-pays. 2017 Benefit cut almost in half, covers premiums but not prescriptions co-pays! because I did the right thing by signing up through Covered CA. Staff very sympathetic (explained that many folks before me were upset by the changes) and offered me a printout with the DrPH, MPH phone number and email to register a complaint (evidently they were prepared to do this because of the early number of complaints). Good news is once you get an appointment the enrollment is fast, but this might change it in Jan when shit hits the fan and folks realize their employer payments are being diverted to the city general fund.

Quick to get an appointment, the people were very informative and helped me get my insurance and other paper work right after i moved back to the city.

We were designed by and for the residents its serves and takes great pride in its ability to accommodate a diverse population that includes young adults, seniors and people with disabilities.

Established in 1994.

San Francisco Health Plan was created as one of California s Local Health Plans – an initiative to provide affordable health coverage to low and moderate-income families residing in San Francisco. In July 2006, SFHP partnered with the SF Department of Public Health to develop and implement Healthy San Francisco and the City Option programs.
