Create Business Process Diagrams to Document Enterprise Activities or Support a Software Development Project

Business Process Modeling Notation is a graphical standard for creating flow chart-like diagrams that are readily understandable by all business stakeholders including business analysts, technical developers, and business managers. The BPMN standard is maintained by the Object Management Group (OMG), the same organization that administers UML.

In today’s complex global marketplace, business processes can be coordinated within a single enterprise or across entire industries. As communication supporting various business activities accelerates, it becomes more and more critical to have a standard modeling system that can be easily read and understood by a variety of users at a broad range of levels within business organizations, yet can be used to represent complex processes involving multiple parties or enterprises.

UModel® 2016 supports both BPMN 1.0 and BPMN 2.0 notation, and even provides a migration path for users who want to update older diagrams with new elements and functionality introduced in the BPMN 2.0 standard. UModel also supports BPMN model exchange with other BPMN tools through the XMI specification first developed for UML models.

BPMN Business Process Diagrams

The elements and rules for business process diagrams (illustrated in the large screen shot above) are very similar to UML activity diagrams, providing a natural transition of the easy to use and highly acclaimed drawing tools of UModel from UML to Business Process Modeling Notation. UModel lets you create free-form diagrams that are useful for capturing the details of an internal process.

BPMN 2.0 added new elements to the original specification to let you refine diagrams that document a wide range of private (internal) and public business activities. New elements in BPMN 2 include event types, task elements, an additional gateway element, several new data elements, and a datastore element to represent a database

BPMN Choreography Diagrams

Choreography diagrams specify the way business participants coordinate their interactions. Choreographies can also be seen as a business contract between participants, where the focus lies on the exchange of information (messages) between the participants.

In the choreography diagram at the right, a customer requests credit from a bank. Each choreography task has two participants and the flow of activities is represented by arrows and gateways. The envelope elements represent messages sent or received.

The UModel Choreography diagram toolbar provides quick access to all BPMN 2.0 choreography elements with drop-down selection of task, event, and gateway variations.

BPMN Collaboration Diagrams

Collaboration Diagrams specify the interactions between two or more processes. A BPMN collaboration generally consists of two or more pools which represent the participants in the collaboration. Message exchanges between participants are shown by Message Flows that connect the two pools, or the objects within the pools.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is a graphical notation that depicts the steps in a business process. BPMN depicts the end to end flow of a business process. The notation has been specifically designed to coordinate the sequence of processes and the messages that flow between different process participants in a related set of activities.

Why is BPMN important?

The world of business processes has changed dramatically over the past few years. Processes can be coordinated from behind, within and over organizations natural boundaries. A business process now spans multiple participants and coordination can be complex. Until BPMN, there has not been a standard modelling technique developed that addresses these issues. BPMN has been developed to provide users with a royalty free notation. This will benefit users in a similar manner in which UML standardised the world of software engineering. There will be training courses, books and a body of knowledge that users can access in order to better implement a business process.

Who is BPMN targeted at?

BPMN is targeted at a high level for business users and at a lower level for process implementers. The business users should be able to easily read and understand a BPMN business process diagram. The process implementer should be able to adorn a business process diagram with further detail in order to represent the process in a physical implementation. BPMN is targeted at users, vendors and service providers that need to communicate business processes in a standard manner.

What does this mean for UML users?

The unified modelling language (UML) takes an object-oriented approach to the modeling of applications, while BPMN takes a process-oriented approach to modelling of systems. Where BPMN has a focus on business processes, the UML has a focus on software design and therefore the two are not competing notations but are different views on systems. The BPMN and the UML are compatible with each other. A business process model does not necessarily have to be implemented as an automated business process in a process execution language. Where this is the case, business processes and participants can be mapped to constructs such as use cases and behavioural models in the UML. Further white papers will follow on the mapping between these techniques.

Will there be a major rewrite?

Not for 2 or 3 years.

What is the relationship between BPMN and BPEL?

BPEL is an XML-based language for describing a business process in which most of the tasks represent interactions between the process and external Web services. The BPEL process itself is represented as a Web service, and is realized by a BPEL engine which executes the process description. BPMN is a standard set of diagramming conventions for describing business processes. It is designed to visualize a rich set of process flow semantics within a process and the communication between independent processes. It is intended to support capture of sufficient detail to allow it to be the source of an executable process description. Since BPEL is currently considered the most important standard for execution languages, a translation to BPEL is specified in the BPMN standard. By design there are some limitations on the process topologies that can be described in BPEL, so it is possible to represent processes in BPMN that cannot be mapped to BPEL. There are a few concepts, such as Ad-Hoc sub-proceses, that BPMN can represent that may not be implemented with any technology.

Business process planning and analysis in strategic planning

Business process planning: Why process analysis is crucial for successful strategy development for any company

Most businesses typically spend time each 12 months acquiring new strategy goals and objectives. Goals are designed that reflect the complete strategy of the firm. Business objectives are then created along with the department level to assistance general
corporation goals. Goals are made to measure the progress in the direction of achieving distinct business objectives. And every single employee has goals that support complete tactics and strategies.

In a ideal world, there would not be any conflicting goals. All division goals would in actuality aid the business goals. Every employee would understand these objectives and recognize how to do the job he or she performs and contribute to the overall organization.

The corporation’s strategic plans would be executed flawlessly and the story would usually have a joyful ending. However, strategic objectives might be created in isolation. Department goals could be self serving and may not assist any other critical for business goals. Business departmental objectives could be in battle along with one or more objectives in reality.

Without proper strategic planning people will usually just see their own story or situation and have no thought what is going on outside their scope and activities.

The accumulation of processes, tools, resources and daily routines that take place in every single business organizational system is what finally determines an organization’s good or poor results. So business processes of any type of kind have to be analyzed so they support key business objectives.

Process analysis is specifically helpful in ensuring the accomplishment of business goals and objectives relating to client, consumer or customer service operations which is directly linked to profitability of the business.

A crucial key to transforming a business is the total comprehension of all the processes involved in it. This knowledge is necessary from any management approach to be of really worth, and it can be incorporated in overall good quality administration. Example of such a business systems and processes is ISO quality system which helps businesses identify, analyze and improve business processes, In adition audits like the Sarbanes Oxley allow managers to create better understanding of the company s operations.

The goal of BPM is to reduce human error and miscommunication and focus stakeholders on the requirements of their roles. BPM is a subset of infrastructure management. an administrative area concerned with maintaining and optimizing an organization’s equipment and core operations.

BPM is often a point of connection within a company between the line-of-business (LOB ) and the IT department. Business Process Execution Language (BPEL ) and Business Process Management Notation (BPMN ) were both created to facilitate communication between IT and the LOB. Both languages are easy to read and learn, so that business people can quickly learn to use them and design processes. Both BPEL and BPMN adhere to the basic rules of programming, so that processes designed in either language are easy for developers to translate into hard code.

There are three different kinds of BPM frameworks available in the market today. Horizontal frameworks deal with design and development of business processes and are generally focused on technology and reuse. Vertical BPM frameworks focus on a specific set of coordinated tasks and have pre-built templates that can be readily configured and deployed. Full-service BPM suites have five basic components:

While on-premise business process management (BPM ) has been the norm for most enterprises, advances in cloud computing have lead to increased interest in on-demand, software as a service (SaaS ) offerings.

Tools for Business Process Modeling using the BPMN

Business Process Modeling is an important part of understanding and restructuring the activities and information a typical enterprise uses to achieve its business goals. With a modeling tool like Enterprise Architect. you can model, document and restructure those processes and information flows using industry standard UML and the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). Best of all, the process designs and models can be used to drive process re-structuring and software development .

With EA you can:

  • Model business processes with industry standard UML
  • Easily take advantage of the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN)
  • Model processes. information flows and data stores
  • Manage requirements at a very detailed level
  • Take advantage of UML Profiles for business process modeling
  • Reverse engineer legacy code and database models
  • Produce great looking reports in standard RTF and HTML format
  • Connect your business process model to use case and software design models for end to end traceability

MDG Technology brings BPMN support to Enterprise Architect
The BPMN Add-in for Enterprise Architect provides a full-featured implementation of the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). This allows business processes to be expressed in a standard graphical notation.

Business Process Modeling is the discipline of defining and outlining business practices, processes, information flows, data stores and systems. BPM often involves using a notation such as UML to capture graphical representations of the major processes, flows and stores.

UML provides activity. state. object and class diagrams to capture important business processes and artifacts. More detailed BPM models can easily be built using UML Profiles. Sparx Systems has available for download a detailed UML Profile for Business Process Modeling based on the extensions defined by Hans-Erik Eriksson and Magnus Penker in their book, Business Modeling with UML . This profile is used to define a set of stereotypes for working with Business Activities, Processes, Objects and Information flows.

BPM differs from software system modeling in a number of important ways. The key difference between system modeling in UML and Business Process Modeling is that the emphasis on how the work is done within an organization, rather than what work is done. It is an important tool in understanding the activities a business undertakes, and the kind of information it needs to successfully engage in those activities. Enterprise Architect can help you identify and document processes within a business, and identify which business processes can be managed more effectively. Also, they serve the important function of situating new and existing software systems within the business context.

Enterprise Architect is ideally suited to capturing and documenting your business process models. Best of all, the models you create in EA can then be used to drive the requirements, use cases, analysis and design phases of new software development projects, all with complete traceability back to your original BPM.
