    We know that for every £1 invested in alcohol recovery, £5 is saved on health, welfare and crime costs. Last year we had:

    • 6,387 meaningful interventions about substance misuse through our Resilient Communities programme were delivered in the past year
    • 1000 new people were referred to our Counselling service, where we deliver 200 hours of counselling every week.
    • Our group work programme has thrived, with a responsive and imaginative variety of activities and groups for service users to participate in.

    Every penny raised helps support individuals and families affected by alcohol misuse. Thank you!

    Our Boardroom, Training Rooms, Counselling Rooms and Kitchen facilities are available for hire on a one off or block booking basis. We offer flexible working week rates and discouts for block booking. Our facilities have free WiFi and a networked overhead projector is available in our training rooms. Our Boardroom caters for up to 25 delegates and our training room offers spaces for up to 40 people.

    The Feel Good Friday group offers a range of activities for our service users. These sessions offer peer support, health and nutrition advice, relaxation and range of computer skills. Some of the members attend an acu-detox clinic which runs 3 times per week. This clinic uses Auricular Acupuncture to help balance mental and physical wellbeing. We offer Qi gong and other types of meditation within this group to help relaxation.

    Our recent Community work has involved in a women’s group called ‘the wee woman’s group’ in Govan. The group set up a small choir and they have been singing at local events and featured on local radio. The group were involved in a community litter pick recently – they then made sculptures using the rubbish collected with the local community artist. The sculptures they made were a 3D versions of art work contained in our service user written book ‘Singular Voices’ – a powerful book containing stories, poems and art work depicting 5 people’s journeys through recovery.

    We recently delivered a pilot programme to the ‘Tomorrow’s women’ service which incorporated a mixture of therapeutic workshops, prevention and education and alcohol and justice work. We are looking into setting up new community groups across the city using volunteers.

    Glasgow Council on Alcohol are one of more than 130 employers who have signed up to the Glasgow Living Wage. What is a Living Wage. The Living wage is a term used to describe the minimum hourly wage necessary for shelter (housing and incidentals such as clothing and other basic needs) and nutrition for a person for an extended period of time (lifetime). This standard generally means that a person working full-time, with no additional income, should be able to afford a specified quality or quantity of housing, food, utilities, transport, health care, and recreation.

    The Glasgow Living Wage was launched in March 2009. It sets a new guaranteed minimum standard of income for all Council workers, set at £7.85 an hour.

    GCA is a voluntary organisation working with individuals, families and communities to promote health and wellbeing. We offer direct support for people to abstain from alcohol or reduce their alcohol consumption, provide training and education and work in partnership with communities and other agencies to achieve our main aim of reducing the harm caused by alcohol and drugs.

    • Address inequalities in service provision and enable wider access to services
    • Improve alcohol and drug education
    • Work alongside partners in the provision of services and education

      • Everyone has the right to live in safety
      • Everyone has the right to be accepted and treated equally
      • Everyone should have access to education, information and high quality confidential services
      • Services should be client centred, respectful and non-judgemental; their staff and volunteers do not exploit, oppress or cause physical or emotional harm to others

    Four Things You Need to Know About Identity Theft

    Identity theft continues to plague U.S. citizens across all income levels, genders, races, ages, and occupations. While the continued rise in incidents has led to greater consumer interest in identity theft prevention and protection measures, identity thieves still manage to find new ways to uncover personal information and use it to their advantage and their victims detriment.

    The most recent statistics from Javelin Strategy Research indicate that more than 11 million American consumers were victimized by identity fraud in 2009, an increase of more than one million people from 2008.* Essentially, one out of every 27 people in this country in 2009 had their personal information used by others to engage in fraudulent transactions or to receive services illegally and that rate shows no signs of abating.

    Here are four things you need to know about identity theft and identity fraud:

    1. Identity theft is a stepping-stone to identity fraud. Identity theft occurs when someone gains unauthorized access to someone else s personal information. Here are just a few ways in which someone s personal data can wind up in the hands of an identity thief:
      • A thief steals a victim s wallet or purse.
      • A thief copies a consumer s credit card while ringing up a transaction.
      • A thief hacks into a corporate or institutional database and steals information about multiple people or accounts.
      • A victim is duped into entering information into a fake website or responding to a phishing e-mail.
      • A laptop computer containing personally identifying information is left unprotected in a public area.

    Identity fraud occurs when that stolen information is used to benefit the thief in some way. The thief may:

    • Make unauthorized charges to the victim s credit card account;
    • Drain funds from the victim s bank account;
    • Use the victim s Social Security number to open new accounts in the victim s name;
    • Use the victim s information to receive healthcare or other services in the victim s name; or
    • Take advantage of the victim s information in a variety of other ways.

    Once a thief has a victim s information, the victim can face a long and difficult struggle, not only to catch the thief but also to restore the victim s identity to its pre-theft status. That s why it s so important to implement identity theft prevention and protection measures before a theft occurs.

    Identity theft can victimize anyone. Legend has it that Willie Sutton, a famous bank robber in the first half of the 20th century, was once asked why he robbed banks. Because that s where the money is, he was reported to reply.

    Identity thieves in the 21st century often follow the same logic. In addition to targeting gullible marks through phishing e-mails and pharming websites, identity thieves go after the big fish celebrities and other public figures who presumably have money to burn, including (but not limited to) Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg and others.

    Clearly, the ability to amass a lot of money and/or attention offers no protection against identity theft.

  • Most identity theft crimes are committed by someone the victim knows. It s difficult to prevent identity theft when a parent can access a child s (or spouse s) Social Security number and use it to create fake accounts.
  • Early detection of identity theft leads to better outcomes. The sooner you can detect and respond to the warning signs of identity theft, the more likely you are to protect your assets and your name. While the zero-liability fraud protections instituted by most credit card issuers have reduced the number of people paying out-of-pocket for identity fraud, the average out-of-pocket cost for those who do pay something is $373, and it takes the average victim 21 hours to resolve the identity theft issue.*
  • The Federal Trade Commission urges consumers to monitor their financial accounts. because the best identity theft protection measure is early detection.

    However, credit monitoring can t catch all of the warning signs of identity theft. For even stronger identity theft/fraud prevention and protection, consumers should strongly consider an identity theft protection program that tracks a much wider range of their personal data, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, phone numbers, affiliations, and more.

    Archived: Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools #drug #programs #in #schools, #school #safety; #violence;

    Congress recently eliminated several programs administered by the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. Notwithstanding these budget cuts, the programs that remain are critical to our efforts to establish safe, supportive, and healthy schools so that children can learn and reach their full potential. Moreover, the Department is committed to developing and deepening program and policy expertise in the program offices, especially in high-priority areas. Therefore, to maximize limited resources, while preserving our program focus, the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools and it’s programs were moved into a new Office of Safe and Healthy Students within the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE). This change was effective on September 26, 2011, and will provide new opportunities for staff from OESE and OSDFS to work together to improve school environments and support children’s learning, health, and well-being. Within the next few weeks, the contents of the new OSHS (formerly OSDFS) webpages was relocated to OESE’s homepage and is available at www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/oese/oshs/index.html .

    The Office of Safe and Healty Students (formerly OSDFS) administers, coordinates, and recommends policy for improving quality and excellence of programs and activities that are designed to:

    Provide financial assistance for drug and violence prevention activities and activities that promote the health and well being of students in elementary and secondary schools, and institutions of higher education. Activities may be carried out by State and local educational agencies and by other public and private nonprofit organizations.

    Participate in the formulation and development of ED program policy and legislative proposals and in overall Administration policies related to violence and drug prevention; drafting program regulations.

    Participate in interagency committees, groups, and partnerships related to drug and violence prevention, coordinating with other Federal agencies on issues related to comprehensive school health, and advising the Secretary on the formulation of comprehensive school health education policy.

    Participate with other Federal agencies in the development of a national research agenda for drug and violence prevention.

    Administer the Department’s programs relating to character and civics education.

    The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools is under the supervision of the Assistant Deputy Secretary who reports to the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary on policy and program administration matters. The Immediate Office of the Assistant Deputy Secretary provides overall direction, coordination, and leadership to the following major elements:

    Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) #mbrp, #mindfulness-based #relapse #prevention, #mindfulness #based #relapse #prevention, #relapse,

    MBRP (Bowen, Chawla and Marlatt, 2010) is a novel treatment approach developed at the Addictive Behaviors Research Center at the University of Washington, for individuals in recovery from addictive behaviors.

    The program is designed to bring practices of mindful awareness to individuals who have suffered from the addictive trappings and tendencies of the mind. MBRP practices are intended to foster increased awareness of triggers, destructive habitual patterns, and “automatic” reactions that seem to control many of our lives. The mindfulness practices in MBRP are designed to help us pause, observe present experience, and bring awareness to the range of choices before each of us in every moment. We learn to respond in ways that serves us, rather than react in ways that are detrimental to our health and happiness. Ultimately, we are working towards freedom from deeply ingrained an d often catastrophic habits.

    Similar to Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for depression, MBRP is designed as an aftercare program integrating mindfulness practices and principles with cognitive-behavioral relapse prevention. In our experience, MBRP is best suited to individuals who have undergone initial treatment and wish to maintain their treatment gains and develop a lifestyle that supports their well-being and recovery.

    The primary goals of MBRP are:

    1. Develop awareness of personal triggers and habitual reactions, and learn ways to create a pause in this seemingly automatic process.

    2. Change our relationship to discomfort, learning to recognize challenging emotional and physical experiences and responding to them in skillful ways.

    3. Foster a nonjudgmental, compassionate approach toward ourselves and our experiences.

    4. Build a lifestyle that supports both mindfulness practice and recovery.

    This website and these resources are maintained by gifted funds. Any contributions are greatly appreciated! Your generosity allows us to continue to offer many of our services at no cost. (Please note: since we do not have nonprofit status, gifts are not tax deductible .)
