VoIP phones #voip, #phone, #voip #phone, #voip #phones, #internet, #internet #phone, #sip #phone, #softphone,

VoIP Phones

This page describes the VoIP phones, its types, how it works and its advantages and disadvantages. Click on any of the following links to get to the corresponding answer.
For more technical details read through VoIP technology .

  • What is a VoIP phone?
  • What is an Internet phone?
  • What is a SIP phone?
  • What is a softphone?
  • What do I need to use a VoIP phone?
  • How does a VoIP phone work and how is it different form a normal phone?
  • What are the advantages of VoIP phones?
  • What are the disadvantages of VoIP phones?
  • What are the ITSPs (Internet Telephony Service providers)?

VoIP means Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP phones (or Digital Phones) send voice data in packets over the IP layer. The services they provide are typically the same as the normal phones but the underlying network and the technology are different.

  • It might be a dedicated device (like the traditional handset) using IP connection.
  • It can also be a normal phone connected to the network through a telephony adapter (TA).
  • Else it can be a softphone .

An Internet Phone is a VoIP phone that uses the public Internet to send voice traffic. Most VoIP phones can be used as an Internet Phone with a little tweaking. However first-generation Internet phones such as the PingTel Expressa have been on the market since 2001.

Typically, an Internet Phone uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) or Media Gateway Control Protocol (MeGaCo). A VoIP phone based on SIP is called a SIP phone. You can have a basic introduction on SIP.

A softphone is a software that runs on a general purpose computer instead of a dedicated device. It simulates the experience of a normal phone with the aid of a headset or a USB device. These use different implementation techniques. They might use standard protocols like SIP or H.323 or a proprietary one.
The most typical SIP-based soft phones as of today include – eyeBeam from CounterPath (formerly Xten), OpenWengo, Nexge, sipXphone, Adore Softphone, Express Talk and SJphone.
Applications like Skype, Google Talk or Yahoo Messenger use proprietary environments of their own. They are not intercompatible.

  1. You need an Internet Connection, a good one, preferably broadband.
  2. You need to register with a ITSP (Internet Telecom Service Provider). You can have a look at the list of ITSP.
  3. If you want to use your older telephone, you need a telephony adapter (TA) to connect the analog phone to the digital network.
  4. Instead of (3) you might take a new voip phone or use a softphone.

VoIP uses an IP based network over which it transmits voice data in the form of packets. Normal phones send analog signals over a switched network (PSTN: Public Switched Telephone Network), which is specifically designed for voice transmission. For a more detailed discussion on the technology, have a look at VoIP technology. Some differences between the VoIP phones and the traditional phones will be clearer as you go through the advantages and disadvantages of VoIP phones.

  • Low cost. Calls over the internet are generally free. That means you can call anyone anywhere in the world just like sending emails. However, the cost for the internet usage is there. There are charges for calling PSTN phones but long distance calls are in general cheaper than traditional landline connections.
  • You can just plug your device anywhere, e.g. in a hotel room and it works as if you are at home. Your number remains the same. There is no roaming cost unlike your mobile phone connection.
  • If you donot have a good internet connection, rather stay away from voip. People have mixed feelings. Some report to have used voip comfortably over dial-up connections, some complain that they had bad experiences even over DSL. To be on the safe side, you need a reliable connection with good uplink bandwidth.
  • The device or the modem through which you connect to the network needs power, either from battery or directly from the line. This might pose a problem where there are frequent powercuts.
  • Number portability if you are switching from a regular phone. Some providers might not even support number portability, some might take considerable delay for the process.
  • Reliability of the system is under doubt as Internet was not designed for real-time services like voice.
  • Support for 911 is not well-defined. Some voip service providers do have support for the emergency number but the way the emergency call is handled might be different from one operator to other.

In spite of the points discussed here, voip telephony has a future. The problems will get solved gradually. However, it is unlikely that voip telephony will take over the PSTN system overnight.

Home Security Systems India #home #security #systems #chennai, #home #security #system #chennai, #burglar #alarm

Home security systems are a must in every home regardless of its size, location and value, among other factors. Keep in mind that burglars, thieves and trespassers will not be too choosy about their targets for as long as these homes can be broken into via a window, a vent or a door. Even a simple three-layer alarm system can deter trespassers from violating the privacy of your home and putting your family’s life in danger.

But not all home security systems are created to handle the task. When choosing from among several residential security setups, you should look for three basic aspects to be in place before considering advanced or updated systems.

These days when the thefts are all time high, a comprehensive home security system is the need of the hour to ensure peace of mind of any homeowner. Whenever you’re away from your house, there are good chances that an intruder may enter your house by breaking through the window or even the main door, and take away all your hard earned money and valuables inside the house.

To avoid such a fate, ASI Home Security System not only offers a wonderful way to merely monitor your house, but also comes with gas leak detector, fire alarm, glass break-in and door break-in detectors to ensure cent percent security of your house round the clock, irrespective of whether you’re at home or away.

Now, you must be wondering as to how your home security system can interact with you while you’re miles away. Well, the unit comprises of a central control device, which can wirelessly communicate with your GMS cell phone. Therefore, the intruder(s) and thieves can’t tamper with it, and various sirens and sensors are connection to the central control device as well.

What’s more, multiple users and multiple cell phones (maximum of 5 GSM Cell Phones) can be connected to the ASI home security system. It comes with 48hours power back-up, and ensures the safety of your home even in case of power outage.

It has multiple zone security, and is capable of monitoring zones inside and outside your house up to a range of 50m. In case a thief enters your premises, the ASI home security system can detect the exact position, and the siren of the system can heard up to the range of 50m.The Buzzer alerts help you in detecting presence of intruders outside the house even when you’re in deep sleep, and you get alerts on your GSM cell phone while you’re away.

For any kind of assistance, all you need to do is to contact our customer support team via phone and our representatives will be at your service within 24-48hours depending upon your location.

Top Solutions for Phone Issues – Small Business Customer Service #phone #problems, #dial #tone,

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the dial tone problem on your phone.
  1. If no dial tone is present on your phone, check to make sure that all receivers are on the hook and the telephone line is plugged into the jack.
  2. If the problem is on one phone only, use a different phone. If you still do not have a dial tone, try a different phone jack to determine whether the issue is with the phone or the phone jack. If the issue is with the phone jack or is happening on all of your phones, contact Verizon Repair for assistance.
  3. If your problem is happening on all of your calls, go to each connected device (such as your phone, modem, and fax) and begin to disconnect them one at a time.
  4. After you disconnect a device, leave it disconnected. Wait 30 seconds, then go to the next device and check if it has a dial tone. If there is a dial tone, then the last device that was unplugged is the faulty device and should be replaced.
  5. Reconnect all other devices except the faulty device and check each for proper operation. If the faulty device now works, mark it and if the problem happens again you can check that device first.
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the outgoing call problem on your phone.

If only one of your phones is causing the problem:

  1. Check to ensure that your phone is turned to touch tone (tt). This switch is usually located on the side or bottom of the telephone set.
  2. Press each button on the phone s number keypad to ensure that they are not sticking or making a dull sound instead of a clean tone.
  3. If you hearing a fast busy signal or a delayed dial tone there may be a surge in the phone line usage in your area.
  4. Try making your call later when phone lines are less busy.

If only one of your phones is causing the problem, check your phone equipment:

  1. Unplug the phone from its wall jack.
  2. Plug a working phone into the jack.
  3. Check to see if the problem persists.

If the problem continues

  • If the problem continues and you have a phone system or multi-line equipment, contact your vendor.
  • If the problem continues and you have a single line service such as a fax, modem or dedicated line, complete the Network Interface Device Network Interface Device Test Procedure to determine if the problem is with inside or outside wiring.
Isolation tests on phone systems or multi-line equipment should be performed only by authorized or certified personnel to avoid damage to the equipment.

Other reasons that might prevent you from being able to call out include:

  • Stuck keypad: The most common cause of incomplete calls is that the keypad is stuck and may not be working correctly. Make sure you can hear each tone when you dial.
  • Verify the number you are dialing: Area codes are changing frequently and some numbers might now require 10-digit dialing.
  • Fast busy: Network problems (such as busy circuits) could cause this problem. Hang up and dial again.
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the static problem on your phone.

If you are hearing static on your phone, check that the problem is not originating from your equipment.

If you are sure you are calling the correct number, check your phone equipment.

  1. Unplug the phone from its wall jack.
  2. Plug a working phone into the jack.
  3. Check to see if the problem persists.

If the problem no longer exists then there is an equipment problem with the first phone you were using.

Static on a cordless phone

If you are using a cordless phone, unplug the phone from the wall outlet and the jack.

If the problem is resolved by removing the phone, refer to the cordless phone owner s manual or replace the equipment.

  • Virtual phone number free trial #virtual #phone #number #free #trial

[Editor’s Note: Grasshopper is now offering an exclusive deal to NextAdvisor readers. When you sign up for the service from our site, you will receive a $75 credit towards your Grasshopper account. There is no coupon code required, simply click on any Grasshopper link on NextAdvisor.com to take advantage of this amazing deal.]

Grasshopper is another Virtual Phone Service that is a great option for businesses because it offers an unlimited number of extensions. Your Grasshopper phone number can be used for receiving faxes as well. Though there were some minor glitches that we will point out in this review, we liked the customizability of this service as well as the many features it offers.

    Interface and Setup

In general, the user interface is clean and simple to use. There are separate tabs for everything that you need to configure. You can add users and limit access to certain extensions. It is also easy to check missed calls and voicemail from your Grasshopper home page.

The setup process is very intuitive and easily lays out each step. With Grasshopper, you can choose between a toll-free number, a custom toll-free number ($30 one-time activation fee), or a local number. The first step involves setting up a greeting template. There are two default options both include the usual, “Thank you for calling, if you know your party’s extension. ” You can change these later and even choose to record your own greeting, but this is a later step in the setup process. After choosing a greeting, the next step is setting up your extensions. With Grasshopper, you can have as many as you want! You can also choose to have a directory option, where callers can type in the first few letters of a name instead of dialing an extension. During the setup process, you will be asked to add a call forwarding number. You can forward each extension to the same number, or use a different call forwarding number for each extension. This is extremely useful especially if you have employees in different locations that need to get calls on their cell phones – simply enter their phone number for their respective extension! You can check voicemails on the Grasshopper page as well as your email – voicemails will be sent as audio attachments.

    Service and Features

The overall call quality is very clear. Grasshopper features a free integrated virtual fax service. Your number can receive faxes, which are then converted into PDF files and emailed to you immediately. Unfortunately, they do not have the functionality for sending faxes. There is also a feature that transcribes your voicemails into words. This is a paid feature, but you can get a free 30 day trial. If you have more than one call forwarding number on an extension, “Call Blasting”, which is an extra $10 per month, will ring them simultaneously to reduce wait times for callers.

There are several greeting options as well. For a one-time fee of $75, you can write your own script and have Grasshopper’s “voice studio” create a greeting for you. Other options include recording a greeting over the phone, uploading an audio file, or recording a greeting via computer. This is where we experienced some glitches, as we mentioned in the introduction. Because the instructions for recording a greeting over the phone seemed lengthy, we decided to record one through our computer microphone. This didn’t work out too well. Most of the time when trying to play back our recordings, the “play” button would not work, making it difficult to test out which greetings work and which don’t. Other times, the recorder wouldn’t even record what we were saying. We ended up using the default greeting that Grasshopper has set up.

    Pricing and Minutes

Grasshopper is definitely on the pricier side, with each plan having more features and minutes than the next. The cheapest plan, which is $12 per month, includes one toll-free or local number and all of Grasshopper’s features, but does not include any minutes per month. Instead, you are charged 6 per minute. The next plan up, which includes 500 minutes per month, is $24 per month. Grasshopper says that its most popular plan is the $49 per month option, which includes 2,000 minutes, two toll-free or local numbers and two number ports. Finally, Grasshopper’s most expensive plan is $199 per month for 10,000 minutes and three toll-free or local numbers.

With the cheapest plan not including any minutes, Grasshopper is not as good a value as other virtual phone services like Phone.com. who charge the same but include 300 minutes in their monthly fee. The setup process is easy and we love that you can have an unlimited number of extensions. Though Grasshopper allows you to receive faxes, it unfortunately cannot double as your business’s faxing service because there is no fax send function. Thus, you may need to look into getting a seperate Internet Fax service for your office. Overall this is a comprehensive service with some great features and quick customer support, but there are definitely other virtual phone services that are a better value if you are looking to use a lot of minutes.
