What Is So Important About Early Childhood Education?


Many people have reservations about the importance of pre-kindergarten education. This was clearly manifest in 2006 when the California legislature unsuccessfully attempted to pass a law that would make pre-school education mandatory for all children. Many Californians did not agree with the importance of using tax payer funds to fund mandatory pre-school programs, including parents desiring to educate their children themselves.

Research has show that children enrolled in Head Start programs benefit by receiving formal education before kindergarten. According to some studies, children enrolled in these programs are more behaved and have higher IQ scores upon enrolling kindergarten than their peers without formal education. Likewise, it was shown that children enrolled in Head Start programs learned quicker than children not enrolled in these programs.

Critics of pre-kindergarten education claim the differences between children enrolled in pre-school programs and children not receiving formal education are only discernible during kindergarten, first, and second grade. During subsequent years, children who’ve not received formal education prior to kindergarten test at the same level and behave like their peers with pre-kindergarten formal education. Therefore, Head Start children may be at an advantage for a couple of years, but after that, their classmates perform at similar levels. Another major problem with Head Start programs is that children qualifying for these programs usually come from families living below poverty-line, so these programs are not readily available for children from all backgrounds. However, children can receive formal education in other ways other than Head Start programs, including daycare and parents teaching their young children. Even though children in daycare programs can develop intellectually, children benefit most when parents stay at home with their children and educate them.

Most childhood education specialists claim that young children learn best when they’re not pushed too hard, they have an opportunity to interact with their peers, and their parents and instructors treat them kindly. Likewise, children learn best when instruction and educational activities are only a small portion of their days. This is especially true of children enrolled in pre-school programs since it’s not good for young children to be separated from their parents for extended periods of time. Children usually do not benefit in programs with inexperienced teachers and large classroom sizes.

Children taught at an early age usually benefit in the following ways: improved social skills, less or no need for special education instruction during subsequent school years, better grades, and enhanced attention spans. Likewise, some researchers have concluded that young children enrolled in pre-school programs usually graduate from high school, attend college, have fewer behavioral problems, and do not become involved with crime in their adolescent and young adult years.

The research detailing these benefits was completed during the 80’s. In addition to benefiting children experiencing normal development, it was also shown that children with learning or other physical disabilities benefit immensely from pre-kindergarten education. Also, children with parents highly involved in their pre-kindergarten education do not experience the same positive results from Head Start programs as children coming from homes where it’s not as much an emphasis. Children taught how to speak a second language during their early developmental years are also in a better position to learn English at a young age.

Many people do not feel the government should determine whether children should be required to receive formal pre-kindergarten education. One reason for this is children who are educated by their parents during their early developmental years experience the same benefits as children enrolled in pre-school programs, especially children receiving a lot of attention from parents. Parents deciding to educate their young children themselves should utilize creative ideas and activities when educating them.

No matter the differences in opinion about formal pre-kindergarten education, children benefit from receiving some type of education during their early developmental years. However, there is not one-size fits all instruction best suited for all children. While some children benefit immensely from pre-school, it may not be the best educational setting for other children. In most cases, children benefit most by receiving educational instruction from their parents. Parents must evaluate a child’s unique personality before determining which program is best suited for a child since not all programs benefit children the same way.

Difference Between Doctorate and Ph.D.

In the academe, both a doctorate and Ph.D. are common terms. However, people who live outside the education sector can confuse or mistake one concept as the same as the other.

Both a doctorate and a Ph.D. refer to the highest distinction and degree conferred upon an individual by an educational institution. The conferment of this type of educational attainment is done by a university. As the highest level, it is usually given after an individual accomplishes both a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree. Both a doctorate and a Ph.D. focus on a single field of study or discipline.

The main difference between a doctorate and a Ph.D. are their respective meanings. A doctorate is an umbrella term for a degree studies or rank. On the other hand, a Ph.D. is a specific degree that falls under the doctorate category.

A doctorate is a program that can produce either a professional or an academic degree. Doctorate studies focus on two main categories of discipline; research and professional.
Holders of a doctorate degree are considered scholars and experts in their field of study.

Meanwhile, a Ph.D. which stands for Doctor of Philosophy, is classified under academic degrees. Recipients of a Ph.D. also employ the same professional and scholarly characteristics of many doctorate recipients. However, Ph.D. degree recipients are more into research and its related skills (writing, conducting, and presenting research).

Any kind of doctorate degree (including a Ph.D.) includes years of coursework, immense studies, and field work to accomplish. The final requirement for the degree is a dissertation, an original and documented material that tackles a particular issue or problem in the discipline. However, the presentations of the final requirement are different. In many doctorate degrees, a dissertation is submitted for review and assessment. In a Ph.D. there is a dissertation defense as well as a publishing requirement. Publication of a Ph.D. dissertation requires that the document is publishable in a peer-reviewed, academic journal.

Doctorate degrees, especially professional degrees, are optional in many industries. However, people in the academe place a higher importance on this type of degree, particularly for a Ph.D. For many educators, a Ph.D. is a must because it is often required by universities among its teaching staff. A holder of a Ph.D. can be both an undergraduate and a graduate (master) student in his own discipline and is eligible for tenure.

Doctorate degrees range from different areas of study and specialization like law, education, medicine, engineering, business, and other professions. Doctorates can also be classified as traditional doctorate degrees (the student accomplishes all the requirements of the degree upon graduation) and the honorary degree (a person who is given the title of doctor due to his contribution to the field, study, or profession). Recipients of both type of doctorates are completely different. A recipient of an honorary degree is not necessarily capable of conducting research or contributing knowledge in a particular field.

Both are postgraduate studies that involve many years of study and contribution to the body of knowledge in a specific field. 2.Recipients of both degrees are expected to have expertise and immense knowledge in their chosen field. The ability to do research is another important characteristic.
3.A doctorate and a Ph.D.’s (Doctor of Philosophy) main difference is in their scope. A doctorate can apply to any academic or professional degree. This includes various specific industries and professions like law, medicine, business, engineering, and others. On the other hand, a Ph.D. is a more defined degree. It is under the academic degrees and concentrates more on research and teaching.
4.Another difference is the presentation of the dissertation, the final requirement before the conferment of the degree. 5.Doctoral dissertations usually involve research that is aligned with a certain profession or research orientation. The document is usually submitted for review or assessment. On the other hand, a Ph.D. dissertation is completely inclined towards research and is required to be defended to a panel and should be publishable in a peer-reviewed journal.

About the Clinical Health Concentration

The Clinical Health concentration will train psychologists in the science of psychology, as well as train them to deliver clinical services in settings such as primary health care hospital teams, rehabilitation, psychiatry, oncology, cardiology, geriatrics, pain clinics, sleep medicine, pediatrics, health maintenance organizations, community mental health agencies, and in the private practice of health psychology.

  • Graduates of the Clinical Health concentration will: be competent in the assessment of a biopsychosocial factors affecting an individual’s overall health and well-being including psychological, cognitive, behavioral, social, environmental, and biological/physical factors.
  • be skilled in developing and delivering psychological interventions to promote prevention and wellness and treat psychological conditions that affect health and illness.
  • be skilled in a broad range of psychological interventions and techniques, ranging from psychotherapy to targeted interventions such as stress-management, relaxation training, biofeedback, health promotion, and problem solving therapy.
  • be skilled in collaboration, consultation, and teamwork, which are essential to working within a multidisciplinary team of health professionals such as medical doctors (e.g. family medicine, psychiatry, neurology, cardiology), nurses, physician assistants, occupational therapists, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, social workers, counselors, speech-language pathologists, and public health professionals.
  • be expert in contemporary research so as to rigorously conduct and apply scientific methods to understanding health and illness and be able to select and evaluate clinical treatment strategies based on established scientific knowledge and empirical support

The clinical health program is based on a mentorship model. Students are commonly admitted to perform research with a specific faculty mentor. The mentorship model allows for a rich training experience.

Our program began in 2007 and endeavors to produce state-of-the-art scientist practitioners in health psychology. The Department of Psychology at East Carolina University offers a Ph.D. program in health psychology with a concentration in clinical health. Our program combines a lifespan approach to understanding health with an emphasis on prevention and care, from primary to tertiary, within mental health and healthcare settings. Students are trained in both research and practice, with practicum experiences in our in-house psychology clinic (PASS Clinic), as well as primary care, and outpatient and inpatient medical settings across medical subspecialties. For example, some program faculty provide psychological services in medical clinics, such as cardiology, family medicine, and pediatrics, accomplishing fully integrated psychosocial care with ongoing medical care.

In addition, the accounting group links students with the real world through the Center for Financial Reporting and Management.
