Securing an open trailer was difficult until now. Steal Armor would like to introduce its latest offering. TRAILERWATCH, an effective way to secure loose or secured items inside or loaded on an open trailer. If your livelihood is dependent on special equipment you are a perfect candidate for this alarm. Once armed it surrounds the trailer with a barrier of protection where once invade it blasts a sound that will draw a lot of intention. Plus if you are less than 1500ft away it will page your 2-Way key fob to let you know you have been hit. At the track it will let you know if someone is poking around your open door race trailer, or if you have a load of ATVs you are hauling to the mountains, what better way to secure them when you stop for lunch than a TRAILERWATCH 2. While you are working a jobsite in and out or open trailer or pickup bed or van use it to keep borrowers from helping their self to your tools. 4 Hot Open Source Big Data Projects

There’s more — much more — to the Big Data software ecosystem than Hadoop. Here are four open source projects that will help you get big benefits from Big Data.

It’s difficult to talk about Big Data processing without mentioning Apache Hadoop. the open source Big Data software platform. But Hadoop is only part of the Big Data software ecosystem. There are many other open source software projects that are emerging to help you get more from Big Data.

Here are a few interesting ones that are worth keeping an eye on.

Spark

Spark bills itself as providing “lightning-fast cluster computing” that makes data analytics fast to run and fast to write. It’s being developed at UC Berkeley AMPLab and is free to download and use under the open source BSD license.

So what does it do? Essentially it’s an extremely fast cluster computing system that can run data in memory. It was designed for two applications where keeping data in memory is an advantage: running iterative machine learning algorithms, and interactive data mining.

It’s claimed that Spark can run up to 100 times faster than Hadoop MapReduce in these environments. Spark can access any data source that Hadoop can access, so you can run it on any existing data sets that you have already set up for a Hadoop environment.

Drill

Apache Drill is “a distributed system for interactive analysis of large-scale datasets.”

MapReduce is often used to perform batch analysis on Big Data in Hadoop, but what if batch processing isn’t suited to the task at hand: What if you want fast results to ad-hoc queries so you can carry out interactive data analysis and exploration?

Google developed its own solution to this problem for internal use with Dremel. and you can access Dremel as a service using Google’s BigQuery .

However if you don’t want to use Google’s Dremel on a software-as-a-service basis, Apache is backing Drill as an Incubation project. It’s based on Dremel, and its design goal is to scale to 10,000 servers or more and to be able to process petabytes of data and trillions of records in seconds.

D3.js

D3 stands for Data Driven Documents, and D3.js is an open source JavaScript library which allows you to manipulate documents that display Big Data. It was developed by New York Times graphics editor Michael Bostock.

Using D3.js you can create dynamic graphics using Web standards like HTML5, SVG and CSS. For example, you can generate a plain old HTML table from an array of numbers, but more impressively you can make an interactive bar chart using scalable vector graphic from the same data.

That barely scratches the surface of what D3 can do, however. There are dozens of visualization methods — like chord diagrams, bubble charts, node-link trees and dendograms — and thanks to D3’s open source nature, new ones are being contributed all the time.

D3 has been designed to be extremely fast, it supports Big Data datasets, and it has cross-hardware platform capability. That’s meant it has become an increasingly popular tool for showing graphical visualizations of the results of Big Data analysis. Expect to see more of it in the coming months.

HCatalog

HCatalog is an open source metadata and table management framework that works with Hadoop HDFS data, and which is distributed under the Apache license. It’s being developed by some of the engineers at Hortonworks, the commercial organization that’s the sponsor of Hadoop (and which also sponsors Apache).

The idea of HCatalog is to liberate Big Data by allowing different tools to share Hive. That means that Hadoop users making use of a tool like Pig or MapReduce or Hive have immediate access to data created with another tool, without any loading or transfer steps. Essentially it makes the Hive metastore available to users of other tools on Hadoop by providing connectors for Map Reduce and Pig. Users of those tools can read data from and write data to Hive s warehouse.

It also has a command line tool, so that users who do not use Hive can operate on the metastore with Hive Data Definition Language statements.

And More

Other open source big data projects to watch:

Storm. Storm makes it easy to reliably process unbounded streams of data, doing for real-time processing what Hadoop did for batch processing.

Kafka. Kafka is a messaging system that was originally developed at LinkedIn to serve as the foundation for LinkedIn’s activity stream and operational data processing pipeline. It is now used at a variety of different companies for various data pipeline and messaging uses.

Julia. Julia is a high-level, high-performance dynamic programming language for technical computing, with syntax that is familiar to users of other technical computing environments.

Impala. Cloudera Impala is a distributed query execution engine that runs against data stored natively in Apache HDFS and Apache HBase.

Paul Rubens has been covering IT security for over 20 years. In that time he has written for leading UK and international publications including The Economist, The Times, Financial Times, the BBC, Computing and ServerWatch.

College Scholarship Programs for Government Employees #how #to #open #a #college #fund

Scholarships Offered to Government Employees

Favors from the Federal and State Governments

College costs do not elude government employees, so federal, state and local public sector workers need student assistance too. Government employees and their families qualify for general financial aid programs like Pell Grants and William D Ford Direct Loans. but additional resources are often required to meet financial obligations related to higher education.

Financial aid administrators; whether disbursing state-specific funding or evaluating applicants for campus-specific programs, rely on information gathered on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The federal application quantifies your precise financial aid needs, which allows individual schools to assess your ability to pay for the educational programs you select. Once your financial outlook is clear, financial assistance is drawn from available programs to underwrite your college expenses. For government employees, and their immediate families, student aid opportunities include access to scholarships that exclusively benefit public sector workers.

In order to land the greatest amount of financial aid for college, students employ a top-down approach, which utilizes government-backed assistance first. FSEOG and other federal programs provide aid for the most financially challenged applicants, and Direct Subsidized Loans offer the most competitive interest rates available for educational financing. State initiatives also provide supplemental funding for needy college students.

Once public aid is exhausted, government employees and their families turn to assistance efforts aimed precisely at them. The following entries illustrate the types of aid available to government staffers. Scholarships are funded by individual states, college endowments, and even big cities like New York.

Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA) Scholarship Program

The Federal Employee Education Fund (FEEA) was established by members of federal unions and management associations to assist government employees in times of need. The organization s mission statement revolves around real-life concerns like retaining good employees and paying for college education. The non-profit group welcomes membership from federally employed civilians, as well as postal workers. The Fund was launched in 1986 and now administers these three flagship programs:

  • Emergency Assistance Program aids members who encounter difficulty meeting everyday financial obligations.
  • Child Care Subsidy contributes funding to federal employee child-care expenses.
  • Annual Scholarship Competition is a merit-based program for federal employees, their spouses and children.

FEEA scholarships include over 400 annual awards ranging in value from $500 to $7500 each. The organization also administers special scholarships that provide additional funding. For example, six regional scholarship competition winners are eligible for supplemental awards worth $5000 each, distributed by FEEA-NTEU.

Following the events of September 11, 2001, NEEA established a twenty-year fund to benefit survivors of the tragedies. The fund provides full-ride four-year scholarships for every single student who lost a federally-employed civilian parent during the attacks.

Another FEEA initiative provides supplemental scholarship funding that honors a fifty year federal employee. The David and Marion Cooke Memorial Scholarship Fund. also known as the Doc Cooke Scholarship, enables FEEA to issue at least one scholarship annually, valued at $1000-$3000. Additional awards are disbursed when funding permits.

All NEEA scholarship competitions are open to civilian federal employees and postal workers, provided that they have logged a minimum of three years of government service. Children and spouses are eligible only when they attend full-time, but employees themselves qualify with part-time enrollment. All applicants must be enrolled in two-year, four-year, or graduate programs at accredited institutions of higher education. Additionally, qualified candidates maintain cumulative GPA standards of at least 3.0.

To apply for NEEA assistance, submit the following materials:

  • High school transcripts
  • College transcripts (if applicable)
  • Essay on assigned topic, which changes annually
  • Copy of government employee s SF-50 form
  • Transcript of extracurricular activities, including community service, awards and achievements

State Aid From South Carolina

Government agencies take care of their own, so scholarships and educational allowances are built-in to employee compensation packages.

Under the provisions of Section 59-111-110 of the South Carolina Code of Laws. If you are the child of a South Carolina government employee killed or totally disabled in the line of duty (including police officers and firefighters), you are entitled to attend a four-year college or a technical or vocational school program – tuition-free. The survivor s benefit only applies to undergraduate programs.

Mayor s Graduate Scholarship Program (New York City)

New York City government employees who have already obtained Bachelor s Degrees, and are committed to continuing education should consider this source of funding. The City offers full and partial scholarships to full-time employees participating in graduate studies in curricular areas like education, nursing, law, business administration, engineering, computer science, social work, public health, and public policy analysis.

Participants are required to continue working full-time for the City, while pursuing their studies. Program schools provide the scholarship funds, which are applied to tuition only. Qualified applicants are encouraged to gain acceptance status at accredited schools, before providing MGSP application materials. Information sessions help employeee-applicants understand the terms of the program.
