7 local business listing sites you should claim now

Finding time to update or create your online business listings can sometimes be a challenge. But once you claim your listing, you can control which information and images are shown on these sites about your business, which is certainly worth the effort.

In many cases, you may already have a listing, so it s just a matter of claiming the page for your business. What s the difference between updating and claiming? Updating means you ve created an account and just need to add new information to the page. Claiming means that a page for your business exists, but you may not have created or set it up. In this case, you ll need to prove it s your business before you can change any information.

There are several sites your business could be listed on, so how do you choose the best? Easy! Start with these seven:

The 7 business listing sites you should claim and update right now

Google My Business

Google My Business, in its own words, connects you directly with customers, whether they re looking for you on Search, Maps or Google+.

How to claim or edit your business listing: Click the Get on Google anywhere on the page, sign in to your Google account, and follow the steps to add your business information to Google.

Yellow Pages

According to YellowPages, they will not only get you online, but can also help you get found, drive leads and expand your reach.

How to claim or edit your business listing: Start by searching for your business, then select your listing. If you don t see your business, click the link at the bottom of the page to add it. Click here to manage your listing.

Don t forget to include this info on every listing:

Be prepared to fill out the following information, and keep it consistent on each site. Consistency helps your SEO (search engine optimization) efforts.

  • Business name
  • Address (city, state, zip)
  • Main phone number
  • Website
  • Business hours
  • A description of your business, minimum 250 characters.
  • Business categories
  • Logo and pictures

Keep a document of each listing so you can duplicate it exactly. Regularly check on your listings and update your information, at least once every six months. Don t forget to keep images of your business current and compelling to draw in prospects and customers.

Bonus Tip! If you re a brick-and-mortar business, encourage people to check in and write a review by displaying a sign in your business window that states the sites in which you re listed. Some businesses also offer customers who check in a special gift or promotion for doing so, but it s not necessary. Never offer gifts or compensation for writing a review.

Someone else verified my business – Google My Business Help, business listing.#Business #listing

Someone else verified my business

Some businesses have already been verified by an owner or manager and have a Google My Business listing. The listing is owned by the person who verified the business.

See if your business has already been verified by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to Google My Business.
  2. Sign in with the Google account you use to manage your business.
  3. Search for your business using its name and address.
  4. Click on your business in the search results.
  5. If you see a dialog letting you know that someone else has verified the business, choose one of the options below.

Try a different email address

You may have already verified your business using a different email address. If you have more than one Google account (for example, one for personal messages and one for business communications), sign out of Google My Business and then sign in with another Google account.

You will see any listings that you have verified with this Google account. If you still don’t see any listings in any of your Google accounts, you will need to contact the current listing owner.

Request access

You can contact the current listing owner through Google My Business to request access to own or manage the listing.

To request access from the current listing owner:

  1. Navigate to Google My Business.
  2. Sign in to Google with the account you use to manage your business.
  3. Enter the name or address of your business, then select it from the search results.
    • You may see a dialog showing part of the email address that verified the listing. If you manage this email address, sign in to that account to access your business listing.
  4. Fill out the form. The current listing owner may need to contact you for more info, so you won’t be able to submit your request without sharing your contact details with them.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. The current listing owner will receive an email asking them to get in touch with you, and you’ll receive a confirmation email. Check on the status of your request by clicking the link in your confirmation email.
  7. Allow a full 7 days for the current listing owner to respond to your request.
    • If you don’t hear back after 7 days, you can click View Request in the original confirmation email and follow the steps to request ownership.
    • If the request is denied, you’ll be notified by email. You can click Appeal Now in the email to appeal the denied request.

You can also attempt to contact the current owner directly using the contact information in their business listing. Include instructions to add you as a listing manager or transfer ownership of the listing to you.

32 Business Listing Sites That Will Get You Referral Traffic

Not all online searches and transactions are performed on search engines. Directories and social media websites expand your reach and have some of the hottest leads on the web at an inexpensive cost. Whether free or paid, these marketplaces are worth spending your advertising budget on.

Should You Submit to Online Directories?

Yes! You should submit your business information and website to relevant directories, and I’ve included a list below. This list is a great sources of leads, consumer reviews and referral traffic. Free or paid, it is important you control your business profile because you need to engage and advertise to consumers where they want to be. Once you claim your profile, update any information that is inaccurate. and be sure to provide details about your business that are a selling point and may draw a new customer in. Most importantly, claim ownership now so that you can respond to positive and negative reviews of your business in the future.

How Many Is Too Many?

There is no set number of directories your business should or shouldn t be in. It s the quality and relevancy of the directories that is important to keep in mind. Links from spammy websites, hacked websites or low quality sites constitute bad neighborhoods that you don’t want to belong to. Linking to your site from these bad neighborhoods on purpose will make you a target for manual penalties from the search engines.

How to Tell Which Directories Are Legit

I have put together a list of 32 directories I recommend, below. But there are many more worth considering. If you re interested in submitting your site to a directory, take a look at the businesses listed and if you would feel comfortable calling on those businesses and they are relevant to your business, then you should feel safe submitting to and being a part of that neighborhood. The quality of the sites you are listed in is important, so stick to the best. The goal is to make sure that the most accurate, up-to-date information about your business gets published where your potential customers are searching.

Getting Started

On any of these sites, search to see if your business is already listed, then claim control of your existing listing instead of submitting a duplicate. For new submissions, I’ve linked to the deepest page that can help you set up a new business profile quickly. Also if you have a directory that you think should be included, please feel free to mention it in the comments.

Need help submitting? This can be very time consuming, and we can help. You can start by evaluating the accuracy of your listing using our free tool, and claim control quickly and easily by syndicating your information through our network, or we can do the legwork for you.
