Install OpenStack Juno on CentOS 7 / RHEL 7

OpenStack is a free and open source cloud computing platform developed as a joint project of Rackspace Hosting and NASA. Users primarily deploy it as an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution. OpenStack cloud consists of many well know technologies like: Linux KVM, LVM, iSCSI, MariaDB (MySQL), RabbitMQ or Python Django.

OpenStack architecture overview:

  1. Horizon: web browser user interface (dashboard) based on Python Django for creating and managing instances (virtual machines)
  2. Keystone: authentication and authorization framework
  3. Neutron: network connectivity as a service
  4. Cinder: persistent block storage for instances based on LVM
  5. Nova: instances management system based on Linux KVM
  6. Glance: registry for instance images
  7. Swift: file storage for cloud
  8. Ceilometer: metering engine for collecting billable data and analysis.
  9. Heat: orchestration service for template-based instance deployment

In this tutorial we will install OpenStack Juno release from RDO repository on two nodes (controller node compute node) based on CentOS 7 / RHEL 7.

Environment used:
public network (Floating IP network):
internal network: no IP space, physical connection only (eth1)
public controller IP: (eth0)
public compute IP: (eth0)

Controller node network interfaces configuration before OpenStack installation:

Compute node network interfaces configuration before OpenStack installation:

First of all, stop and disable NetworkManager on both nodes (controller and compute):

Update your system on both nodes (controller and compute):

Install RDO repository (controller node):

Install packstack automated installer (controller node):

Generate answer file for packstack automated installation (controller node):

Edit answer file (/root/answers.txt) and modify below parameters (controller node):

Here attached: answers.txt file used during our installation.

Launch packstack automated installation (controller node):

Installation will take about 1-1,5h, we will be prompted for root password for all nodes (in our case: controller and compute):

After successful installation we should get the output similar to the below:

Test your installation login to the Horizon (OpenStack Dashboard), type the following in your web browser:

Let s go back to the console, create OVS (openvswitch) bridges and bind them to physical network interfaces on both nodes

After OpenStack installation we have following network interfaces on controller node:

and on compute node:

Type following commands on controller node:

Modify ifcfg-eth0 file on controller node to look like:

Modify ifcfg-br-ex file on controller node to look like:

Modify ifcfg-eth1 file on controller node to look like:

Connect eth0 interface to br-ex bridge on controller node.
Below command will trigger network restart, so you will lose network connection for a while! The connection should be brought up again, if you modified ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-br-ex files correctly.

Now let s connect eth1 interface to br-eth1 bridge (this will restart network too) :

Now your network interfaces configuration on controller node should look like below (public IP is now assigned to br-ex interface):

Check OVS configuration on controller node. Now port eth0 should be assigned to br-ex and port eth1 should be assigned to br-eth1:

Modify ifcfg-eth1 file on compute node to look like:

Now on compute node connect eth1 interface to br-eth1 bridge (this will restart network) :

Check OVS configuration on compute node. Now port eth1 should be assigned to br-eth1:

Time to check our new OpenStack cloud status and functionality.
After each OpenStack installation a file /root/keystonerc_admin is created on controller node. This file contains admin credentials and other authentication parameters needed to operate and maintain our cloud. It looks like below:

Let s source this file to import OpenStack admin credentials into Linux system variables, to avoid being prompted for password each time we want to invoke OpenStack command:

Check OpenStack status on controller node to ensure mandatory services are running:

Verify hosts list on controller node:

Verify services on cloud hosts (execute on controller node):

Thx for prompt answer .

Yes I m using Liberty release.

As it is if I try to run an instance on the faulty compute node. I got following error in neutron logs :

Failed to bind port e3167852-2ff6-4b33-8cad-a901b29d23d8 on host lptxopsvnode01

AFAYK. could it be related to this bug ?

On the controller/compute node. no problem to start an instance.

Linux commands: Process and Task Management Commands, linux task management.#Linux #task #management

linux task management

This document provides some basic command line process management tools for users who want a more granular view of process/memory management. Note, processes are really applications, these words will be interchanged throughout this document.

This is by no means a full list of commands or switches.

There is a wealth of knowledge on how to use and what commands do can be obtained from www.google.com/linux

The ps -ef command will display full information about each of the processes currently running.

ps command – most active with CPU

You can use advanced ps commands to sort by a lot of things. in this example we show the top 4 (tail -4) CPU intensive processes. Note, the sed option is redundant in this example, it removes processes that are idle (0.0).

You can also create an alias in your login profile /home/userid/.bashrc as a short cut for a long command such as this:

ps command – most memory intensive

You can also sort/locate the largest memory intensive processes with ps. In the example below, Firefox is using about 50 MBs of RAM.

You can also create an alias in your login profile /home/userid/.bashrc as a short cut for a long command such as this:

kill command

Example: Request to kill a few processes

Example: Forcefully kill a set of processes

killall command

Killall allows you to kill all process with a particular name

top command

Top is a long time established tool for looking at processes.

(press h for help, it will show the most memory/cpu processes at the top of the screen.)

Example of Top running

NMON utility

The nmon tool is helpful in presenting all the important performance tuning information onone screen and dynamically updating it. The tool works on any dumb screen, telnet session, or even dial-up line. In addition, the tool is very efficient. It does not consume many CPU cycles, usually below 2%. On newer machines, CPU usage is well below 1%.

Data is displayed on the screen and updated once every two seconds using a dumb screen. However, you can easily change this interval to a longer or shorter time period. If you display the data on X-Windows via telnet and stretch the window, nmon can output a great of information all in one place.

The nmon tool can also capture the same data to a text file for later analysis and graphing for reports. The output is in a spreadsheet format (.csv)

(then for example press c and then m, to illustrate CPU and Memory)

(Click here for screenshot) Linux task management

The interface can be bemusing for those used to more sophisticated GUI but with a little practice a very useful tool.

Try using the Keys to navigate and with the help and hint options a wealth of information can be had.

To view several things, just press the letter for them in succession (i.e. c d m ).

One way to quit is to use Cntrl + C key function.

swapon -s

Use swapon -s to view the status of the swap file. In the example below, the user has about 1GB of swap and 438MBs of it is used.

Get free web filtering

Block inappropriate websites with one simple change to your router

By Mike Bedford | 22 Jan 2013

The prevalence of adult material on the web will be of concern to many people with young families. Here we’ll explain how to use the free FamilyShield service from OpenDNS.

There are several ways of ensuring that inappropriate content can t be accessed and you may have tried some already. For example, plug-ins are available for most browsers but that s a hassle if you have to configure the filters for every possible browser on every PC or laptop. Stand-alone software is slightly simpler but still has to be set up separately on all PCs, and there’s still the issue of smartphones and tablets in your household.

Alternatively your ISP (internet service provider) might offer a filtering service but details will differ from one ISP to another. By way of contrast, the solution we re recommending here FamilyShield from OpenDNS will work irrespective of the browser, the PC, smartphone or tablet and the ISP. You can also use it under MacOS or Linux, in addition to Windows .

The only criteria is that the devices being protected must gain access to the Internet via a particular wireless router that you have access to and are, therefore, able to configure. If a smartphone connects via a different wireless router for example, a neighbour’s unsecured router the same protection will not be enabled. Similarly, connections to the Internet from a smartphone or tablet via the mobile phone network won t be protected.

The solution involves using a different DNS (domain name system) server from the default one which you normally use. Since DNS isn’t exactly an everyday term, a word of explanation is in order. When you type a URL into a Web browser, that address is sent to your ISP s default DNS server on the Internet which looks up its IP address, that is the actual address that computers understand. So, for example, if you entered www.microsoft.com into your browser s address bar, the IP address would be retrieved from the DNS server and used to access the Microsoft Website (try typing A good analogy for the DNS server, therefore, is a telephone directory.

Although you normally use your ISP s default DNS server you can use different ones by entering the IP address of your preferred DNS server in your wireless router s configuration menu. FamilyShield is a content filtering option for the OpenDNS server. It s totally free, you don t have to install any software on your PCs, and you don t even have to register.

How to configure Family Shield

1. Go to the OpenDNS website select Home DNS from the grey bar at the top and then, under Parental Controls , select Get Started . Next, on the OpenDNS Parental Control Solutions page, click on OpenDNS FamilyShield and then the orange Sign up now button. You could sign up by providing your email address but if you d prefer not just click on the continue link at the bottom.

2. On the next page you ll then be asked whether you want to setup FamilyShield on your router or on your PC. OpenDNS recommends the former, as do we, because this is the solution that will cause any computer or other device connected to your Wi-Fi network to be protected. So, click on the picture of the router to continue.

3. The next page lists all the major manufacturers of wireless routers and you should click on the name of your to see detailed instructions as to how to configure your router to use OpenDNS FamilyShield in place of your IPS s default DNS server. In the next step we ll see how that s done with a Netgear router but the principles are similar with other routers.

4. Enter the router s IP address (the default for Netgear is into the address bar of a new browser tab and log in using username admin and password password (unless you ve changed it). Select Basic Settings from the menu and against Domain Name Server (DNS) Address , check Use These DNS Servers and enter and as the Primary and Secondary DNS addresses (but make a note of any original addresses). Click on Apply at the bottom of the page and log out.

5. Although DNS requests will now go to FamilyShield, for a while cached pages will be used so you need clear these. First clear your browser history (details differ depending on the browser) and then the Windows DNS cache. To do this, run Cmd from the Start menu to bring up the command prompt window. At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

6. Back in the browser tab you were using in Step 3, click on the NEXT: Test your new settings link at the bottom of the page of instructions. All being well you ll see a page displaying the message Your family is now protected! . If you don t see this message, you ll have to retrace your steps and correct any mistakes.

Next page: how to use the standard version of OpenDNS for more control

Download the Free Nmap Security Scanner for Linux #nmap,free,hacking,stealth,port #scanner,portscanner,port #scanners,security,download,network,linux,windows,unix,mac #os #x,solaris,freebsd,openbsd,tools,tool,open #source

Downloading Nmap

Nmap and Zenmap (the graphical front end) are available in several versions and formats. Recent source releases and binary packages are described below. Older version (and sometimes newer test releases) are available from the dist directory (and really old ones are in dist-old ). For the more security-paranoid (smart) users, GPG detached signatures and SHA-1 hashes for each release are available in the sigs directory (verification instructions ). Before downloading, be sure to read the relevant sections for your platform from the Nmap Install Guide. The most important changes (features, bugfixes, etc) in each Nmap version are described in the Changelog. Using Nmap is covered in the Reference Guide. and don’t forget to read the other available documentation. particularly the new book Nmap Network Scanning.

Nmap users are encouraged to subscribe to the Nmap-hackers mailing list. It is a low volume (7 posts in 2015), moderated list for the most important announcements about Nmap, Insecure.org, and related projects. You can join the 122,795 current subscribers (as of September 2016) by submitting your email address here:

You can also get updates from our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nmap is distributed with source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License, with certain clarifications and exceptions noted in the copyright page.

Source Code Distribution (in case you wish to compile Nmap yourself)

This is the traditional compile-it-yourself format. The Nmap tarball compiles under Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and many UNIX platforms (Solaris, Free/Net/OpenBSD, etc.) It includes Zenmap, the GUI frontend. Nmap is now offered in bzip2 format as well as traditional gzip.

Detailed Linux/BSD/Solaris compilation instructions and options are provided here. though this usually does the trick:

If you are compiling Nmap anyway, you might prefer to get the very latest code from our SVN source code repository rather than downloading a tarball here.

Microsoft Windows binaries

Please read the Windows section of the Install Guide for limitations and installation instructions for the Windows version of Nmap. You can choose from a self-installer (includes dependencies and also the Zenmap GUI) or the much smaller command-line zip file version. We support Nmap on Windows 7 and newer, as well as Windows Server 2008 and newer. We also maintain a guide for users who must run Nmap on earlier Windows releases..

Note: The version of Npcap included in our installers may not always be the latest version. If you experience problems or just want the latest and greatest version, download and install the latest Npcap release.

The Nmap executable Windows installer can handle Npcap installation, registry performance tweaks, and decompressing the executables and data files into your preferred location. It also includes the Zenmap graphical frontend. Skip all the complexity of the Windows zip files with a self-installer:

We have written post-install usage instructions. Please notify us if you encounter any problems or have suggestions for the installer.

For those who prefer the command-line zip files (Installation Instructions ; Usage Instructions ), they are still available. The Zenmap graphical interface is not included with these, so you need to run nmap.exe from a DOS/command window. Or you can download and install a superior command shell such as those included with the free Cygwin system. Also, you need to run the Npcap and Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package installers which are included in the zip file. The main advantage is that these zip files are a fraction of the size of the executable installer:

Linux RPM Source and Binaries

Many popular Linux distributions (Redhat, Mandrake, Suse, etc) use the RPM package management system for quick and easy binary package installation. We have written a detailed guide to installing our RPM packages. though these simple commands usually do the trick: You can also download and install the RPMs yourself:

Mac OS X Binaries

Nmap binaries for Mac OS X (Intel x86) are distributed as a disk image file containing an installer. The installer allows installing Nmap, Zenmap, Ncat, and Ndiff. The programs have been tested on Intel computers running Mac OS X 10.8 and later. See the Mac OS X Nmap install page for more details. Users of PowerPC (PPC) Mac machines, which Apple ceased selling in 2006, should see this page instead for support information.

Other Operating Systems

Many other operating systems support Nmap so well that I have no need to create and distribute binary packages myself. You can choose to use the packages below, or compile the source distribution. which is often newer. We have created installation pages for the following platforms:

Scp from linux to windows – Stack Overflow #scp #linux

I am running a putty client on windows machine to connect successfully to a linux box. Now i want to be able to copy file in linux machine /home/ubuntu/myfile to C:/Users/Anshul/Desktop on my local computer. The user at windows machine is anshul. I am giving the following command on putty but it is not working

scp /home/ubuntu/myfile ip_address_of_windows_machine:C:/Users/Anshul/Desktop

I think the path for the windows machine is wrong. Please help as i have banged my head on large number of forums but none seem to give correct path for windows server. Dont suggest alternate options like Winscp

asked Apr 19 ’12 at 19:56

Windows doesn’t support SSH/SCP/SFTP natively. Are you running an SSH server application on that Windows server? If so, one of the configuration options is probably where the root is, and you would specify paths relative to that root. In any case, check the documentation for the SSH server application you are running in Windows.

Alternatively, use smbclient to push the file to a Windows share.

answered Apr 19 ’12 at 19:59

Windows doesn t support SSH/SCP/SFTP natively. Neither does Linux or any other OS. It always needs a service for that. Joey Apr 19 ’12 at 20:40

IMHO, you would use something like the following

The . will copy the File to the local default directory of your program. For example using GitBash, this saves the File to my configured work folder under D: drive.
