5 Hot Work-From-Home Business Ideas

From grocery shopping to backyard pond kits, new home-based businesses get creative and profitable.

Yes, we know all about child care and dog walking. But isn’t there something you can do while working in your slippers?

In fact, yes. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, entrepreneurs nationwide are finding new and creative ways to work from home. And they’re not just selling ideas anymore, like public relations and consulting services.

Today’s home-based entrepreneurs make up 52 percent of all small businesses, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and they are selling everything from groceries to backyard pond kits. Here are a few of the latest home business ideas, from those who are putting them into play.

1. Go for the Groceries

Entrepreneur Suzanne A. Wells buys groceries, marks them up, and turns them around on Amazon. “This business model works on the concept of scarcity: The less there is of something, the more people will pay for it. I sell things like specific, hard-to-find flavors of Crystal Light drink mix, hard-to-find gluten-free products, or specialty baby formula,” she says. “We scout out our local stores to find products we can sell for a profit on Amazon.” Last year, she sold 100 boxes of limited edition candy corn Oreos for $25 per box. Her cost at the local grocery, $3 each.

2. Mind the Shop

When business owners go out of town, Susanne Riehle takes their calls. As a “business babysitter,” she handles daily tasks such as responding to emails and triaging minor issues, sending receipts and quoting published prices. “Now the business owner can leave on vacation with relative ease and comfort, because the business is taken care of,” she says. Equipment is minimal: Basic computing, call-forwarding from the business, maybe an archived copy of Quickbooks. Should a major issue arise, “the babysitter has an emergency contact number for the business owner.”

3. Spiff up Slides

Margy Schaller’s home-based idea sparked when she saw medical and dental speakers at local society and national association conferences give great talks with lousy visuals. “Their PowerPoint slides were typically rudimentary, with a bland blue background, white font, and way too much text on any given slide,” she says. The market for presentation design on the corporate side is saturated, so she set up Laser Pointer in Poway, California. to address a niche market of medical professionals. Now she takes their basic slides and reformats them into slick-looking, professional visuals. “All I need is my laptop, cell phone, and an Internet connection. I typically start my workday at 8 a.m. and go until 5 p.m. with an hour lunch to play with my dogs.”

4. Make Matches

At Home Remedies in Hewlett, New York, Debra M. Cohen spends her day making matches. She vets local tradesmen for quality — painters, plumbers, carpenters, and such – and when she’s satisfied, she refers them to homeowners seeking such help, taking a pre-negotiated percentage for her services. She’s grossed $4 million since 1997 with no overhead, not just by making matches but by spawning look-alikes. She charges between $2,000 and $7,000 to others around the nation who want to replicate her business model. It’s a high-touch enterprise, but not so much that she has to leave the house. “This is a people business and it’s important to build trust, so I like to talk to my homeowners and contractors by phone as often as possible,” she says. With phone, email, website, and enewsletter, Cohen has all the outside contact she needs to keep the wheels turning, without having to get in the car.

5. Move Big Goods

At first it looked like John Olson had gotten it wrong. Graystone Industries was thriving, so much so that product was stacked 12 feet high, up to the vaulted ceiling in the living room. It was piled in every bedroom, the garage, the attic. “We had to worm our way through winding pathways to get from one room to another,” he recalls. The product is too bulky for a home business — statuary fountains, fountain lighting, pond kits — so Olson solved his space dilemma by outsourcing. “We got an order fulfillment company to ship our products, another company to provide customer service, another to do invoicing while another does web work.” The result: $1.8 million in 2013 sales, and Olson gets to stay in his PJs, should he so choose.

Hubby is wanting to start a hot shot business!!

My husband has been driving trucks for about 10 years, now he says that hes tired of driving for other ppl and wants to start his own hot shot business. Me being the worry wort I am i’m really concerned. We have 2 kids and just recently moved from WV to OK. My hubby seems to think he would be able to make a really good living. I was just wondering if anyone would be able to either make me feel better about this decision or prove to him i am right.

Well this is a tough one. Yes there is a living to be made doing this, but it is not cheap to get started. My suggestion to you and your husband is to read this forum completely (every single post!!) at least 3 times TOGETHER. Then discuss it in a friendly way. Then ask us every question you can come up with (even the ones you think are silly or dumb). The folks here on this forum will be happy to help. Lee

Buster(Lee) is 101% on point.
I have been in this business for decades. It is always a crap shoot by nature of the business. Make a lot of money. Some weeks tickle you pink with good stuff, other weeks give you ulcers.
This biz is expensive to start if you begin with really good equipment, and it is expensive to keep running. Good equip’t allows you to run with less maintenance costs but cost more to start. Lower end equip’t forces you to take more time and money to keep running. The difference? Down time can cost you good paying freight and give you a bad reputation if it is ongoing. It will also run up your blood pressure and anxiety level.
If you lapse on insurance, it is a red flag. Insurance is expensive and is the first bill you need to cover each month(if you don’t pay yearly). Truck and trailer payment [$$$?]. dunnage, straps, chains, tarps, duct tape, corner protectors, etc. are ongoing expenses, you need it when you need it. Things wear out. Bungies are not really cheap because they don’t last very long in the environment. Ya, they’re cheap, by the box, but all these things add up. Not enough cheap bungies can ruin a good tarp fast.
Fuel. Pay with a credit card=credit price. Stay warm or stay cool idling the truck=more fuel cost or extra expense for some auxilliary power/fuel.
You have to be relatively comfortable on the road, you have to get good rest.
First thing I missed [big truck to little truck] was an air ride seat, second was the space I had to forfeit.
Another HUGE area in this biz if you flatbed, IT IS FLATBEDDING. Not for everyone. If you are new to it, you MUST learn how to tie down.
It is imperative. I could easily continue for days and weeks and.
The great part? What you screw up, noone to blame. What you accomplish, YOU did it. It can be very rewarding. It is a lot of work and it takes a special talent to do it by yourself. Read this forum in it’s entirety, and I mean completely in it’s entirety, over and over and over and over again. Then read it over again. You will not find the truth about this biz ANYWHERE else in any shape or form as you will find it here.
This is not to discourage you, but to inform you well. One more thing, a personal thing, please be careful not to sanitize his dream in anyway. Negativity breeds negativity. Dreams put into action are what make everything work, the fuel of life. Ignorance is a lazy fault, and can be fixed. The knowledge for this business is available here, but you have to supply your part to make it whole. Above all, have fun and laugh alot.

10 hot businesses to start now

By Philipp Harper

Special to msnbc.com

Got the entrepreneurial itch?

Well, you’re not alone. In the coming decades expect increasing numbers of wage slaves to place their bets on self-employment and its potential for both personal fulfillment and profit.

Of course, just because everybody’s doing it doesn’t guarantee success. Any decision to go it alone needs to be informed. Markets never remain static and what’s hot today could be as cold as a collection agent’s heart a year or so from now.

There’s no ironclad way to pick the next big thing — or to avoid buying into the small-business equivalent of the Edsel — but there are ways to insulate yourself from truly unwise decisions. Mostly this involves paying attention to society’s big demographic shifts.

Ask the right questions and consult the right sources and you can learn who has the money and how they’re likely to spend it. Then, think about how you can leverage your knowledge and talents to capture a slice of that market.

There’s no substitute for doing your own research, but to help you start the process here are 10 business ideas that figure to be hot for the foreseeable future. Most are representative of broad trends that will generate plenty of other good ideas, so be prepared to free associate.

1.Home elder care I. Thanks to the miracle of modern medicine, members of the so-called “greatest generation” are able to live independently, but frequently not without help. Businesses that provide personal services to the elderly — grocery shopping, chauffeuring, physical therapy — are good bets for the sole operator.

2.Home elder care II. Because of temporary or permanent illnesses and disabilities, part-time assistance may not be sufficient to allow the elderly to remain in their own homes. Sometimes round-the-clock skilled nursing care is required, and agencies that supply competent and honest help are and will be much in demand.

(It’s worth noting that businesses catering to the “greatest generation” will be well-positioned to serve their children, the baby boomers, who constitute the largest, wealthiest generation in U.S. history. Of course, before the boomers require living assistance, they’ll be spending plenty of loot as active retirees. Members of the generation’s leading cohort turn 59 in 2005 and their impending retirement represents a huge market opportunity.)

3.Retirement real estate. The elderly like it hot, and boomers will be no exception. Properties in temperate climates, particularly those within easy striking distance of the coast, have begun to go through the roof. (This would explain why in recent years West Palm Beach, Fla. emerged from urban decay to become the nation’s fastest appreciating single-family home market.) Selling retirement real estate, or providing services to firms that do, figures to be a growth industry.

4.Trust and investment services. Helping boomers manage the vast wealth they collectively possess will provide plenty of work for accountants, investment advisers, insurance agents, lawyers specializing in trusts and estates and everyone in between. Count on the government to keep the tax code so convoluted that professional advice is always needed.

5.Personal improvement. Long obsessed with how they look and feel, boomers won’t hesitate to spend retirement dollars on regimens and treatments that let them cling to at least the illusion of youth. Entrepreneurs who effectively deliver such nostrums as Pilates and yoga, Botox and other beauty treatments and nutritional counseling will tap into a gold mine.

6.Retirement recreation. One of the benefits of good health is the ability to remain active, and boomers will pursue vigorous activities in retirement as no generation before. Golf, fly fishing, hiking, bicycling are just a few of the pursuits on which retirees will drop lots of money. As with real estate, the watchword in this entrepreneurial market is location, location, location.

7.Resort services. Active boomers and younger enthusiasts will fuel a development boom in the most scenic parts of the country. Overcrowding in the national parks and the rapid development of the intermountain West are two signs of this. With more residents comes the need for more services: restaurants, dry cleaners, copy centers — name it.

8.Outsourcing I. Not all of the jobs being outsourced by U.S. corporations are heading overseas. Plenty of the work is staying at home in the hands of independent contractors in the areas of accounting, law, human resources. An entrepreneur with in-demand expertise would do well to explore the corporate market.

9.Outsourcing II. Not all outsourcing takes place beyond the corporate walls. Often the work is performed by temps supplied to companies by agencies. An agency with a particular “hook” — in other words the ability to provide competent workers a demonstrated sought-after skill — figure to do well in the current and future business environment.

10.IT consulting. During the 2000-2010 decade, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts, eight of the 10 fastest growing jobs will involve computer technology.
