#at home businesses
Locating your business at home
It may be possible for you to start off working from home, especially if you are providing a service. With modern telecommunications and computer technology, locating a business at home is increasingly popular.
You can deliver services and products to customers world-wide.
Types of home-based businesses
In South Australia 60,000 businesses operate at, or from, home. The types of home-based businesses include:
- writing and editing
- health-related services
- small-scale manufacturing.
Many tradespeople operate their businesses from home. They travel to their job sites daily and keep their equipment at home and in their vehicles.
Owning a home-based business is, for the most part, just like owning any other business.
Regardless of location, every business must have a market for its products and services and generate sufficient sales to cover operating expenses and make a profit.
The level of profit must be sufficient to:
- reward the business owner’s time
- repay any loans
- accumulate capital for expansion
- reward the capital invested
- pay any taxes applicable to net income.
Operating a business at home may mean lower overheads and therefore the selling price of your goods and services can be lower.
It is also possible to claim tax deductions for a portion of:
- mortgage interest costs
- council rates
- water rates
- strata rates
- telephone expenses
- energy costs
- building insurance premiums.
Consult your accountant or tax agent.
Review the viability of your business idea by preparing a business plan.
This ensures you consider all possible costs of your business operation and calculate your overheads accurately.
Legislation for home-based businesses
Planning regulations may impact on your ability to run a business from home.
If customers or clients gather at your house, or the noise level is excessive, you may breach planning regulations. Your local council could order you to cease trading. They can fine you for every day you contuinue to trade against an order.
There are some specific restrictions on businesses operating at a residential property. You must not:
- employ more than one person over and above the owners of the property and business
- occupy more than 30 square metres
- use machinery drawing more than 0.4 kilowatts
- impose greater load on utilities than would be the
case for a residence
- create any noise or nuisance
- generate more than normal vehicle traffic in a residential street
- display a sign without consent of the local council
- display goods for sale outside the house
- involve the use and parking of a vehicle greater than three tonnes tare weight.
There may be additional zoning controls imposed. Check with your local council.
You must consider specific insurances for your business. Household insurance does not cover business activities, such as customers coming to your home.
#work from home ideas
You want to launch your own business, but you’re not sure where to start. You don’t have a business plan, and you’re not sure about the logistics of marketing, sales, human resources, customer service, accounting, legal compliance AND you d like an opportunity that has a low-risk potential. A home-based franchise may be the perfect home business solution for you!
A franchise is basically a business-in-a-box or business model that can be easily replicated. That s the beautiful thing about a franchise; all the hard work has been done for you; you basically pay for the franchise, and you’re given a detailed manual, training, and tools on how to replicate the business exactly. Many franchises have well known established brand names too, so you spend less money on marketing your business.
You ve heard of famous franchises like Starbucks and McDonald s, but there are also some great franchises out there that will allow you to work from home. With over 1,500 different franchise companies in the USA, you re bound you find one that fits your interests and skills.
Now that you re sold on the idea of a home-based franchise there are some important factors to consider before you make the leap.
Franchise Costs and Fees.
The downside of owning a franchise is the initial cash requirement is generally a substantial amount, and many franchises require you to pay monthly maintenance costs. Besides the initial cost and ongoing fees, you ll want to look into the profitability of the franchise. Talking to individual franchise owners can be a good place to start, but know that location can sometimes be a big factor in how successful your franchise is. Before you start looking for funding options ask for a comprehensive earnings list of current franchise owners so that you can evaluate the real earning potential of the franchise.
Again, the great thing about a franchise is it s an easily replicated business with a proven business model so you ll want to find out all of the nitty gritty details.
Here are some questions you ll want to ask:
- Is training in-person, online, or via printed materials?
- Do they offer on-going support?
- Does the company provide location/territory exclusivity?
- What are the royalty fees? Are there on-going marketing fees?
- How are you allowed to market your franchise?
- Whats systems do they use for marketing, bookkeeping, payroll, content management, and legal advice.
Determine if You Have the Right Personality to Be a Franchise Owner.
One of the downsides to owning and running a franchise is that you don t have complete freedom over how you execute the business. You ll need to adhere to rules and policies set forth by the franchising agent. If you re found breaking the rules you could end up in mediation, arbitration, or your franchise contract could be terminated. This is why it s so important to make sure that you fully understand all the terms and policies before signing a contract. If you re the type of person who wants more creative freedom, starting your own business from scratch may be a better option.
What Home-Based Franchise Opportunities Are Available?
Here s a list of some of the home-based franchises with low to moderate startup fees. Please note, this list does not cover ongoing fees associated with each franchise you ll need to check with the individual companies for complete, up-to-date information, prices, and related fees.

How Can We Help?
The Small Business Association of Australia (SBAA), understands how challenging it is to start your own business. This is one of the things that continues to motivate us to provide support and assistance to owners of small and medium enterprises or SMEs to help them succeed in their chosen endeavour.
The Small Business Association of Australia is one of the fastest growing and widely recognised organisations in the country specialising in supporting and advocating for the SME. We firmly believe that SMEs are making significant contributions to the growth of the national economy and are a vital component of Australia’s future. We continually see that owners of small and medium-sized businesses are not receiving the support and recognition they deserve, so we have taken up the challenge to help them in every way we can.
Setting up a small business in Australia is challenging at best, but with the assistance of SBAA, SMEs can grow and secure their future.
Better educate business owners.
We believe that education and knowledge are key ingredients of a successful business, so apart from organising networking events, we also host educational events and learning programs for our members. We provide various learning resources and tools to help members enrich their knowledge of running a successful enterprise.
Connect and Establish Strong Working Relationships with Like-Minded People.
SBAA regularly organise networking events that will enable members to connect and foster relationships with other business owners on a local, national, and international level.
SBAA serves as the “voice” of SMEs by expressing their concerns to the government. We also seek the assistance of key stakeholders on their behalf to encourage policymakers to create economic policies that will benefit and help SMEs. The launch of the SBAA Think Tank focuses on the fields of research, education, policy, and practice for small business in Australia.

#best home business
When you think of starting a work-at-home business, what comes to mind? Tupperware parties? Trunk shows? Cosmetics sales? Does that stop your daydreaming in its tracks?
We’re happy to report that there are options on the horizon that don’t require selling products or hosting parties. The best work-at-home business currently trending is the type where 1) you are in control of how much you earn and 2) is fulfilling.
The time-consuming tasks associated with traditional forms of work-from-home opportunities (e.g. the afore-mentioned makeup sales, trunks shows, Tupperware sales, etc.), are eliminated when you start a small business in the customer service space. The days of hunting for new leads, event organization, and setup, are out the window as calls come to you directly in the comfort of your own home.
Inbound customer service can be the best work-at-home business
The rapidly growing work-at-home business opportunity, customer contact support (providing customer service support to companies from the comfort of your home), can be an ideal small business opportunity. Home-based customer service businesses allow you to apply multiple skill sets, and don’t involve the pressure of sales. Options for entrepreneurs starting work-at-home businesses in the customer service space can range from customer service to tech support—there is a niche for almost any specialty!
Virtual customer service isn’t just about being on the phone
A work-at-home business providing customer service keeps things interesting. Whether it be via phone, chat, or email, there is no limit to the unique questions and concerns that your business will encounter. Many small businesses find a niche responding to email inquiries, or providing chat customer service and when you own your own business there’s no “9 to 5”; customer inquiries are routed strictly on your time, based on the hours that you choose.
Phone support for a roadside assistance or security systems client, for instance, can be done at any time of the day; morning, afternoon, or night. Business hours are constructed on the timetable that you personally set as a business owner to take these incoming calls.
Although there are many trades that can be done from home, the best work-at-home business is one that suits your expertise, enables you to earn money, and above all else, keeps you interested. Working from the comfort of your own home is a trend that has boomed in popularity in recent years, but entrepreneurship is a long-term goal, and traditional avenues of work-at-home businesses, such as makeup sales, or clothing and jewelry trunk shows, are often short-term solutions. Home-based customer service businesses are a welcome alternative for those seeking a better option.

Seven Ideas to Build Your Direct Sales or Party Plan Business outside of the Home Party
If you are a direct sales or home party plan consultant, you know that the power of your business lies in the party. However, there are times when your calendar might be a little bare due to the season or cancellations or you might not be able to do as many in home parties or demo s. There are many ways that you can build your direct sales or home party plan business outside of the home party. These ideas can be used for incremental sales every single month or to rev up your business when home parties are low.
Here are Seven Ideas to Build Your Direct Sales or Party Plan Business outside of the Home Party:
1. Host a Mystery Host Party at your house one night or afternoon! Everyone who attends and orders is entered to be the host of the party and get all the host credits and bonuses OR you could even draw for a winner of a FREE Business Kit use part of your commission from the sales to pay for the kit keep part of the host credits for yourself to gain a new recruit!
2. Set up a Stop n Shop party at your office or a local restaurant after work one day (or offer to do this for your customers, friends, hosts)! Set up your kit, set up some games and prize drawings and let your friends stop in and see the newest products, catalog and sales fliers and shop! If you have or can sell cash carry, bring some products and offer them as bonus buys with a minimum purchase amount.
3. Mini Parties! Get 12 friends or customers to collect $150 in orders for you. Put all the orders in one party order split the host credits between those who collected and submitted orders. Depending on how your host program works, each person would be able to receive $20-$50 in free items! (You’ll make a great commission from this too!)
4. Set up an online party and share the link on Facebook, your website, networking groups, your customer email list Offer daily order specials, share product tips and gift ideas on the event. You could do a mystery host party through the online party too. (Be sure to personally invite people, don t just add them to the event and if you do this in a FB group, definitely do not add people without their permission!)
5. Hold a fundraiser for your church, school, favorite charity or family in need. If your company does not offer a Fundraising program, consider donation a portion of your commission to a worth cause.

#business from home
Starting a business from home
Home-based businesses are a popular option for many types of smaller business. Generally the costs will be lower and you can avoid travel expenses. You also have the freedom and flexibility to work the hours you choose in an environment that you create yourself.
Advances in technology mean that many kinds of business can be run from a home base.
This guide will help you decide whether starting a business from home is right for you. It also suggests options you may want to consider when starting a home-based business.
You can get support for starting a business by using the MyBusiness app. Get the MyBusiness app from the App Store.
Becoming a home business owner is a common choice for people who only need a small office. They may spend most of their time working on their clients’ premises.
However, working from home may not be an option if it significantly changes the use of your home, or affects your local area, for example if you have lots of visitors. If you rent your home, your lease may include restrictions on using it for business purposes.
Advantages and disadvantages of home-based business
The major advantages are that you:
- don’t have to spend a lot of money on office rental or office purchase
- save time and money by cutting your commute
- can be flexible around the hours you work
The disadvantages are:
- it may prove difficult to keep work and home-life separate, and there may be domestic distractions and interruptions
- a lack of contact with other people and businesses
- you might end up working long hours
- your mortgage, home insurance and tax situation may be affected
Addressing the disadvantages
It’s important to keep your home and work life separate, especially if you have a family.
If you’re feeling isolated from other people, Business Gateway and other organisations can provide you with details of networking events. You can also network with other businesses using social media .
If you do not yet have a home business idea, ask yourself three questions:
Is there a gap in the market? Have you tried to buy something that you just can’t find? Others may be looking for that product too.
What is my passion/skill/hobby? Can you find a way of making a living from it?
Can I do something better? Have you seen someone offer a product or service that you think you can offer better yourself?
Popular home business ideas
Consider opportunities in your local area for services such as child care, tutoring, translation, editorial services, dog walking and alteration services.
Other common home-based businesses include:
- website designers
- arts and craft makers
- virtual assistants who provide professional assistance to clients from a home office
You could also consider investing in a franchise. The benefits of being a franchisee are that you are your own boss but also have the benefit of working with a central team. There are a growing number of home-based franchise opportunities that you can explore.
Working ‘five to nine’
You may want to consider starting a business while in full or part-time employment, using the evenings and weekends to build your business. This means that you will have money coming in while your business finds its feet. However, you might find it difficult to manage the extra hours and the extra work.
Your business plan
Once you have worked out a business idea, you need to create a written business plan .
You may need to buy, lease or rent equipment for your home office and any materials you need for the service you are supplying.
Finding and keeping in touch with customers can be a major issue, so investing in a good computer with relevant software and a broadband connection may well be a priority for you.
The most common costs to consider when starting out are:
- a computer
- broadband access
- mobile phone
- office desk or chair
- business cards
- stock – if you’re supplying products
When you’re factoring software packages into your start up costs, consider much cheaper or even free options – open-source software such as OpenOffice, Zoho, Google Docs and StarOffice.
Your work environment
It’s important to create dedicated work space – it allows you to work without distraction and close the door on work at the end of the day.
You might consider marking the area you use for work. A spare room with a lockable door or an outbuilding are popular choices enabling home business owners to:
- deal with clients in a professional manner
- resist demands from other members of the household
- keep work equipment separate from home equipment
Allocating part of your house as a workplace can have tax and insurance implications.
You can create a space to call your own by:
- using office equipment in a general area of the house and putting it away when not in use
- housing your workstation in a cupboard, wardrobe or under-stair space with lockable shutters or doors
Work equipment and workstation setup
When setting up your work area you may want to consider:
- a fully adjustable chair and desk suited for computer use
- that your desk should be big enough for your computer, keyboard and monitor
- storage to keep office clutter free
- keeping your feet flat on the floor and your back straight when sitting at your desk – the top of your monitor should be at eye level
Home business and planning permission
If you’re making substantial changes to your home to accommodate your business it may be prudent to get in touch with your local authority regarding planning permission.
- complete your tax returns easier and quicker
