Government Small Business Loans

Government small business loans help put your own business within reach. First there’s the quest for a decent location, then comes building a customer base, followed by all the initial hiccups of generating a cash flow before your business grows roots and gains momentum. The beginning of a business is crucial because it’s when you gain or lose market credibility. If you disappoint your customers, they may not give you a second chance. If your business gets off to a rocky start (most do), and you believe you can recover but need further financing to make this happen, you can apply for government small business loans.

Why Government Loans?

For-profit lenders are reluctant to issue loans to anyone who does not have a strong credit report and financial history. That is not the case with government small business loans. Obviously, a decent credit report is important, and you will have to follow the guidelines regarding the repayment period and the interest rate set by the government, but usually the interest rates charged by government loans are lower than those you could expect in the private sector.

More about Government Small Business Loans

Government loans are typically offered through banks and credit unions that partner with the Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA is a U.S. government body, with the motive of providing support for small businesses and entrepreneurs. For each loan authorized, a government-backed guarantee offers serious credibility, since the lender knows that even if you default, the government will pay off the balance. These loans can be applied to a number of uses, such as:

  • Purchase of new equipment, machinery, parts, supplies, etc.
  • Financing leasehold improvements
  • Commercial mortgage on buildings
  • Refinance existing debt
  • Establishing a line of credit

Government small business loans benefit both small businesses and the lending agency. For small businesses, it is beneficial because this is money capital they may not have access too. For banks, the loan’s risk is decreased due to the loan being backed by the SBA.

Different SBA Government Loans

The SBA extends financial help through various lending programs it has to offer. Some of the more popular loans are:

  • 7(a) Loan Guarantee Program: aimed primarily in helping a small business start or expand its services. The maximum size of such a loan is $5 million.
  • MicroLoan Program: mostly used for short-term purposes, such as purchase of goods, office furniture, transportation, computers, etc. The maximum amount is fixed at $50,000.
  • 504 Fixed Asset Program: featuring fixed-rate and long-term financing, these loans are aimed at applicants whose business model will benefit their community directly, either by providing jobs or bringing needed services to an underserved area. Again, the maximum amount is $5 million.
  • Disaster Assistance: under this program, loans are sanctioned to renters or homeowners with a low-interest, long-term plan for the restoration of property to its pre-disaster condition.

In most cases, maintaining a good business credit report is enough to qualify. In addition, it instills confidence not only in the lender, but also in you. There is at least one SBA office in every state in America. If you contact them regarding the startup status of your business model and plan, you can get started on a government small business loan that will give you the financing to make your dreams a reality.

10 top government grants for start-ups

Government grants are notoriously hard to snare for start-up businesses and can involve completing a mountain of time-sapping paperwork in the application process.

However, it appears the system isn’t always as stringent as it should be. A damning report tabled in the Victorian Parliament last week showed that 50% of all businesses awarded grants had failed to properly meet the criteria .

Before you rush off your application in the belief that it’s open season on grants, it’s worth remembering that countless more start-ups are still rejected for grants than are accepted.

To help you navigate the complex web of grants, we have partnered with Victoria’s Small Business Festival to hold an instructive, free webinar, no matter where your business is located. You can sign up to the webinar by clicking here .

But it’s also worth getting a good handle on what grants are out there for start-ups. The most obvious candidate for new ventures is Commercialisation Australia. which offers matched funding up to $2 million for proof of concept, early-stage commercialisation, skills and management support.

But there are others that you may not be quite so familiar with. We’ve picked out 10 of the best, but maybe little-known, grants available to small businesses.

For information on each grant, click on the tabs below:

1. Enterprise Connect

An offshoot of the federal Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, Enterprise Connect is perhaps best known for the free business review it performs for entrepreneurs.

But the network also oversees several start-up focused programs that have cash attached.

The Researchers in Business Grant provides 50% of salary costs, to a maximum of $50,000, for university researchers to work on new idea within a business for between two and 12 months.

There’s also the Tailored Advisory Service Grant, which stumps up half the cash needed, up to $20,000, to engage a consultant to make improvements in your business.

Boiler grants

As part of the Government funded energy efficiency scheme, boiler grants are being allocated throughout the UK. Energy suppliers will install a free replacement boiler in qualifying households.

UK Homeowners and private tenants in the UK may be eligible for a grant to replace their old, inefficient heating system with a new A-rated condensing boiler as part of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, a Government initiative which obliges the six main energy providers to provide energy saving measures to reduce carbon emissions and reduce your bills.

The funding available depends on the estimated saving in your home by fitting a new boiler. The greater the savings, the higher the funding is likely to be. You may eligible for a grant to cover 100% of the replacement cost or a significant part-payment.

Attic room insulation grants

The latest Government backed grant announced recently under the The Affordable Warmth scheme, a Government initiative which places an obligation on the ‘big six’ energy companies to contribute towards the improvement of the heating and insulation of British homes.

If you have an attic room (accessed by a solid staircase) you could be eligible for significant improvements to bring the attic space up to current building regulations. More.

Government ECO grants

Utility funded grants are currently available for the following measures:

  • Loft Insulation grants
  • Cavity wall insulation grants
  • Boiler replacement grants

100% grants covering the whole of the installation costs are available for most areas of England Scotland and Wales regardless of the utility company you use. More details can be found on the Free Insulation page.

Health Insurance in India still remains an untapped market #china, #russia, #health, #south #africa,

Health Insurance in India still remains an untapped market

In a country where less than 15 per cent of population has some form of health insurance coverage, the potential for the health insurance segment remains high. It seems that there is an urgent need to ramp up the health insurance coverage in the country as out-of-pocket payments are still among the highest in the world.

Furthermore, according to the statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2011, India has spent only 3.9 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) on the health sector which is the lowest amongst the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) member countries pack.

Moreover, amongst the BRICS nations, in 2011, Russia s out-of-pocket expenses stood highest at 87.9 per cent closely followed by India (86 per cent), China (78.8 per cent), Brazil (57.8 per cent), and South Africa (13.8 per cent). On the other hand, these expenses in developed economies of US and UK were comfortably poised at 20.9 per cent and 53.1 per cent respectively.

High out-of-pocket expense is exactly the reflection of low health insurance coverage in India. Sudip Bandyopadhyay, President, Destimoney Securities, opined, We don t have the insurance to cover and thus we end up paying from our own pockets. Once the penetration of health insurance increases, out of pocket payments will come down. In US and all, health insurance coverage is around 80 per cent.

Reasoning out the low health insurance coverage in India, Antony Jacob, CEO, Apollo Munich Health Insurance, said, Only about 12-13 per cent of population has some form of health insurance coverage, including those who are covered through some form of government schemes. People are yet to accept health insurance as a financial tool for medical emergencies. They usually procrastinate when it comes to buying health insurance unless they are faced by a challenging situation.

Although the Indian health insurance market still lags behind other countries in terms of penetration yet the health insurance segment is rising. It continues to be one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the Indian insurance industry with gross written premiums for health insurance increased by 16 per cent from Rs 13,212 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 15,341 crore in 2012-13. The health insurance premium has registered a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32 per cent for the past eight financial years.

Health insurance segment still remains an unexplored territory in India. Jacob at Apollo Munich Health Insurance asserted, Health insurance has become one of the most prominent segments in the insurance space today and is expected to grow significantly in the next few years. As spending on healthcare in India is expected to double in a couple of years, we believe that health insurance will eventually become the biggest contributor in the non-life segment.

Furthermore, in the present scenario, the health insurance industry is dominated by four public sector entities (National, New India, Oriental, and United India) that together have 60 per cent market share. The rest of the share is with 17 private sector players, of which four are standalone health insurance players (Star Health, Apollo Munich, Max Bupa, and Religare Health). ICICI Lombard continued to be the largest private sector non-life insurance company, with market share of 9.74 per cent.

Standalone health insurers have got a boost by the move taken by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) in early 2013. Bandyopadhyay averred, Few months back, IRDA has classified health insurance as a separate category and has permitted the insurers to tie-up with banks. All the four exclusive health insurance companies will be tying with the banks across the country and that will help them to move to the next level. The penetration of health insurance is now expected to increase with banks pushing for it through bancassurance tie-up.

Baltimore County Government

Permit Processing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need a building permit to add an additional bathroom? How can I obtain a building permit?

A. If it is a commercial building, yes; if it is a residence, no. However, plumbing and electrical permits are always required. The licensed plumber and electrician may apply for their respective permit before the work is initiated. The property owner or designee may apply for the required building permit in person by coming to:

County Office Building
111 West Chesapeake Avenue, Room 100
Towson, Maryland 21204

For additional information and permit fees, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. Is a building permit required for a small storage shed in my back yard?

A. If the structure exceeds 120 square feet, a building permit is required.
If it is 120 square feet or less, a permit is not required unless:

  • It will be used for livestock or human occupancy
  • It is located in a designated “Chesapeake Bay Critical Area”
  • It is located in a 100-year floodplain
  • It is located in a “Baltimore County Historic District”

The accessory structure (storage shed) must be in the rear yard, unless a zoning variance is obtained.

If the structure is over 120 square feet, but less than 1,000 square feet, four plot plans are required with the application.

If the structure is over 1,000 square feet, five plot plans and two construction plans are required with the application.

Even if the structure is less than 120 square feet and requires no building permit, it must still meet zoning and environmental protection requirements.

For additional information, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. Do I need a building permit to replace my windows and doors?

A. Unless the property is in or part of a historical district, doors may be replaced without a building permit, provided there is no structural work, and the location or size of the door or window does not change. For additional information, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. How long does it take to get a building permit after the application is filed?

A. The processing time required before approval and issuance varies for different types of construction projects. Some permits for small projects may be issued the same day. Larger and more detailed construction projects will require review of construction plans and other related issues by one or more different county agencies. For additional information, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. How long is my permit valid and can it be extended?

A. Permits are valid for one year with an option to be extended for one additional year at the time the application is filed. If the permit has expired, you will need to file for a new permit. If your permit has not expired or just recently expired, you may request an extension by contacting Building Inspections at 410-887-3953.

Q. How can I schedule an inspection or check on a permit?

A. Use Inspection Connection to schedule, reschedule, or cancel building, plumbing, or electrical inspections, available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Call Permit Processing at 410-887-3900 to check on the status of your permit.

Q. Do I need a building permit for a small addition to a house?

A. Yes, any additions to the house require a permit. For additional information, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. When do I need a permit for alterations to a house?

A. A building permit is required for structural work or when a new bedroom or kitchen are created. Permits are not required for siding or roof repair. However, if your house is in or part of a Baltimore County Historical District or is on Baltimore County’s Landmarks List, a building permit is required for any work on the exterior or any work that affects the exterior appearance, including repair or removal of any part of the house, fence or accessory structure. All electrical or plumbing work requires a permit and must be obtained by a licensed electrician and plumber.

A. If you are screening in an existing covered porch or covered deck, a permit is not required, with the exception of historical areas. If you are making a weatherproof enclosure of an existing porch or deck, a permit is required. Enclosing a porch or deck is considered an addition because it extends the “indoor” area of the house and is subject to the same setback limitations as the house itself. For additional information and permit fees, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. Do I need a permit to put a fence on my property?

A. All fences over 42 inches high require a permit. Fences 42 inches or less in height do not require a permit unless located in a proposed or designated Baltimore County Historic District or on the Baltimore County Landmarks List.

Q. When is it necessary to have a grading permit?

A. If the proposed grading disturbs over 5,000 square feet of surface area or over 100 cubic yards of fill material is utilized, a permit is required. For additional information and permit fees, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Q. How do I arrange for a percolation test?

A. First, a percolation application must be filled out and submitted to Permits, Approvals and Inspections along with a $60 fee and four copies of a map (scaled 1:100) of the property showing property lines, topography and nearby streams. Once the application has been reviewed and approved by the Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability (EPS), the property owner needs to hire the services of a backhoe operator who will then schedule an appointment to perform the tests with a EPS sanitarian. You may review and\or print the percolation checklist (PDF) online. For additional information and permit fees, contact Permit Processing at 410-887-3900, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

TransferWise launches international money transfers via Facebook

The Facebook logo is displayed on their website in an illustration photo taken in Bordeaux, France, February 1, 2017. Regis Duvignau

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Money transfer company TransferWise has launched a new service that allows users to send money internationally through Facebook Inc’s chat application, as competition in the digital payments landscape intensifies.

The London-based startup said on Tuesday that it had developed a Facebook Messenger “chatbot”, or an automated program that can help users communicate with businesses and carry out tasks such as online purchases.

TransferWise’s chatbot enables customers to send money to friends and family to and from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Europe from Facebook Messenger. It can also be used to set up exchange rate alerts.

Facebook already allows its users to send money domestically in the United States via its Messenger app, but has not yet launched similar services internationally. TransferWise said its service will be the first to enable international money transfers entirely within Messenger.

Facebook opened up its Messenger app to developers to create chatbots in April in a bid to expand its reach in customer service and enterprise transactions.

Chatbots have become a hot topic in enterprise technology over the past year because recent advances in artificial intelligence have made them better at interacting. Businesses, including banks, are hoping that they can be used to improve and reduce the cost of their customer service operations.

One of Europe’s most well-known fintech companies, TransferWise was launched in 2011 by Estonian friends Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann out of frustration with the high fees they were being charged by banks for international money transfers.

The company, which is valued at more than $1 billion, is backed by several high profile investors including Silicon Valley venture fund Andreessen Horowitz, Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, and PayPal co-founders Max Levchin and Peter Thiel, through his fund Valar Ventures.

Customers in more than 50 countries send roughly $1 billion through its website every month.

While the TransferWise chatbot is now only available in Facebook Messenger it can be adapted to work with other popular chat services, Scott Miller, head of global partnerships for TransferWise said. He said the service would eventually be extended to work in other countries and money transfer routes that the company operates in.

The launch comes as competition in the mobile payments and international money transfer sectors intensifies. Earlier this month PayPal Holdings Inc announced its U.S. payments application Venmo would be available within popular chat service Slack.

While in January. Ant Financial Services, an affiliate of Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, said it would acquire U.S. money-transfer company MoneyGram, in a deal that is expected to shake up the international payments landscape.

History

Officially the first Monroe County Park, Ellison Park came into being in December of 1926. The county accepted approximately 200 acres of land from Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Ellison in memory of Mr. Ellison’s father, Nathaniel. Ellison Park has been the hub of many historical events and locations. Indian Landing which was located on Irondequoit Creek, for many years was used by the indigenous Iroquois as the beginning of the portage route which stretched along Ellison Park.

The Lost City of Tryon, originally founded in hopes of creating a commercial settlement, used the Irondequoit Creek for trade. A store was built that bartered with the Seneca Indians, beginning its trading roots.

Restrooms

There are four restrooms located in the park. There is one located by the Disc Golf Course off Landing Road (open seasonally between May 1st and October 31st). There is another behind the Hazelwood Grove Lodge. Another facility is located by the Creekside Lodge. The last restroom is located by the Sycamore Shelter (open seasonally between May 1st and October 31st). All of the restrooms have flush toilets. See the park map for specific locations.

Trails

Before heading out to Ellison Park print the park map. The color coded hiking trails and additional details will keep you on the right track.

Coyote Den Trail, this 1.1 mile walk (one way) passes by a few ponds and walkers can expect to see many birds and other wildlife.

Overlook Trail, this .6 mile walk overlooks Thomas cove and the stone quarry.

Mill Race Trail, this .4 mile walk, shows the stages between wetlands and a forest.

Indian Landing Trail, this 1.5 mile walk, is full of history, from the location of an old trading post (Fort Schuyler), to the presumed famous Butlers’s Rangers hideout, marked with commemorative plaques.

Butlers Gap Trail, this .7 mile walk (one way) has many interesting historical features as well as an intersection that overlooks the wetlands.

Disc Golf

A new Disc Golf map can be found here. The Greater Rochester Disc Golf Club worked very hard with the Parks Department to re-route the course.

Disc golf is open for play from approximately early/mid April until mid-November, dependent upon ground conditions and weather. If you’ve never played before, there’s never been a better time to get out early and learn. Contact the Greater Rochester Disc Golf Club at www.grdgc.org for more information about the sport.

There is one playground facility in Ellison Park. It is located on the north side of Blossom Road, near Roadside Shelter. See the park map for the specific location.
