Online Colleges in California

Most Popular Rankings

As the most populous state in the US, California is home to a whopping 457 institutions of higher education. California State University is the largest university system in the country and prioritizes innovation in distance learning. This is evidenced by their pilot program launched in 2013 in partnership with Udacity. which was designed to create affordable options for underserved populations.

CSU s efforts are very much in-step with the California state government s dedication to online postsecondary options. The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) noted that the Governor s 13- 14 budget allotted tens of millions of dollars to expand online learning in California’s public institutions of higher education. Furthermore, six state bills were put forth that same year that all dealt with online education in an attempt to make it more accessible, efficient, and accountable. While many of these bills remain in flux, such efforts make it clear online education is a major priority for California s representatives.

Before we look at the very best online colleges in CA, let s start with the state of higher education and online education in particular in the state today.

A Brief Overview of Higher Education in California

In 2013, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that California had 457 degree-granting institutions, broken down as follows: 149 public schools, 167 for-profits and 141 nonprofits. A recent report, also released by the NCES. found that California has more than 2.7 million enrolled students, the most in the nation.

in 2013, California had 457 degree-granting institutions

Tuition-wise, the College Board found that, in the 15- 16 school year, the average in-state tuition and fees for four-year public schools was $9,270, while the out-of-state average was $26,920, only increasing by 1% over the last five years.

As for the state s financial aid efforts, the National Association of State Student Grant Aid Programs (NASSGAP) reported that California awarded $1.67 billion in need-based grants and $2.38 million in non-need grants for the 13- 14 school year; combined, this makes California s grant total the largest in the nation. Grants make up 15.9% of the state s total fiscal support for higher education. As the nation s largest education hub, it is reassuring to see that California, when zoomed out, manages to have competitive tuition and generous financial aid.

The State of Online Higher Education in California

While California has made meaningful progress in offering more online courses, with at least 9% of all college courses being offered online. where the state truly shines is in its support of online community college programs. A report by the PPIC stated that by the 2011-12 school year, one fifth of community college students in the state, nearly 530,000 students, were enrolled in at least one online course ― that s more than seven times the rate a decade prior. When you hone in on specific subjects, the report found the numbers were even more astonishing: with one-third total enrollment in business and IT courses at community colleges taken online.

It s no surprise then that organizations like the California Community Colleges Online Education Initiative and the California Virtual Campus have emerged as premier facilitators of online learning in the state. Not only do these initiatives let students browse through online courses and programs found all over California, they also work to decrease the costs of online education, improve retention and graduation rates and increase the demand for online courses.

The Virtual Campus has particularly stood out, with the 2015-16 release of a new course exchange program that lets students easily enroll in courses at community colleges throughout the state, making it easier for students to fulfill courses that are either scarce or quickly fill up.

Project Manager Simulation Game Game Corp

Rating. 8.3 / 10 – 6053 votes

Game Corp is a highly interactive, entertaining and quirky business management simulation game for older kids, high school and college students, and grownups who enjoy online games that involve business themes and thinking strategy. In Game Corp, you take control of your very own awesome computer game development company! Starting from scratch, you have to hire good workers, manage projects, create new flash games, and gradually build your business up from a small-time, mini-game development outfit into a highly successful global corporation in the online game industry! Hire the brightest technical minds to produce fun games, choose the most popular genres, utilize fab modern technology, and have excited gamers from around the world flocking to try out your latest titles! If your games prove a success, you can sit back and watch the (virtual) money roll in!

This interesting and challenging tycoon game is a good fun activity for practicing and testing out essential real-life business skills such as good money management, shrewd decision making and strategy planning, the ability to successfully motivate employees, and general project management skills. Your masterful multi-tasking skills are called into play as you react to fluctuating game market trends, and concentrate on a number of different projects at once. While some knowledge of online flash game genres is helpful, complete beginners and tycoon game newbies should also enjoy the fast-paced, mouse-clicking action! Can your company create sufficient enchanting games to be considered for the prestigious end of year Game Developer Awards? Happy team building and game developing!

How to Play: Your goal is simply to become a profitable company by creating, developing, and publishing online games from your very own offices. You play the role of the CEO and project manager all in one, and have to hire and organize your different team members, assign them to each game project, build working facilities, choose game genres, and more. At the beginning of the game, your helpful ‘assistant’ guides you through the basic controls of the game. We recommend that you pay close attention to your assistant’s instructions, as there are numerous different aspects that you need to get to grips with.

Use your computer mouse or touchpad to perform all of the controls. At the beginning of the game, you have an office space – but no employees. Click on the empty desks / workstations, then click on the ‘Hire Worker’ button that appears. Here, you can choose from a variety of different technical game writers. Next, it’s time to get them working on creating a new game. Click on the ‘Project Manager’ button in the bottom left corner of the game screen (the blue folder icon), and then click ‘New Project’. Next, you have to choose the genre of your game (adventure, racing, shooter, simulation, strategy etc). At the beginning of the game, you don’t have enough workers to produce all of the different genres, but that changes as you hire more staff. After that, you assign your team to the different production tasks (code writing, graphics, sound etc). Each worker can only perform 2 production tasks at a time. Finally, you choose the technology ‘tool’ used to make the game.

Once your team complete the production of the game (this takes time on the clock in the top left corner), click on the ‘Project Summary’ button in the bottom left corner, then click ‘Publish’. You receive virtual income from the publication and playing of your games. At the beginning. your games are of low quality, and therefore do not generate a lot of income. However, as you progress and hire more skilled workers, your revenues should increase. Later on, you can also market your games, and choose all different types of genres. At the end of each ‘Game Year’, an award ceremony takes place. If your company wins any of these awards, you earn huge bonuses which can be used to purchase new employees, tools, and workstations. Good luck!

Comparison of Schools

Individuals who are deciding on a college should consider many factors. The following table presents information they should know about each of these schools in a format that makes comparison easy.

Fashion Institute of Technology

Source: *NCES College Navigator.

Fashion Institute of Technology

The Fashion Institute of Technology was founded in 1944 as a trade school for workers in the apparel industry. It began offering college degrees in 1951. As of 2013, it is divided into five different schools. The School of Art and Design, which offers a degree in computer animation, enrolls 3,800 students per year in 17 different subject areas.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Computer Animation and Interactive Media

An applicant pursuing this 2-year degree program must first earn at least an associate’s degree or 60 hours towards a bachelor’s degree in a different program. Prerequisite courses include computer-assisted design, 3D modeling, 2D animation and interactive media design; students must submit an admissions portfolio as well.

Once admitted to the BFA program, students complete 69 additional credits through classes in programming, the history of animation, storyboarding and interactive media design. In the final year, seniors take several classes devoted to music and animation production as they work towards completion of a senior project. Students must also complete 30 general education credits.

The New School

Students interested in game design at the New School will be enrolled in Parsons: The New School for Design. Parsons was founded in 1896 as an institution for art and design education. It became part of the New School in 1970, and is comprised of five smaller schools dedicated to different design mediums. Game design students study in the School of Art, Media and Technology, which also offers majors in four other areas.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Technology – Game Design

Students seeking admission to this program must submit a portfolio and complete The Parsons Challenge, an assignment that calls for the creation of three essays and three images on a subject assigned by the school. Once admitted to the school, students complete 134 credits, including classes in creative computing, the history of design and technology, core studio skills and various electives. This degree program culminates in a senior thesis and an internship.

Master of Fine Arts in Design and Technology

This 2-year program offers areas of focus in narrative, computation and interactivity. All students in this degree program complete 60 credits, taking coursework in creative computing and design, as well as several studio courses. The program culminates in a master’s thesis.

New York University

In 2008, New York University developed the Game Center, an institution dedicated to exploring the potential of video games as a cultural and creative medium. The Game Center is housed within the Tisch School of the Arts, and many courses are offered in collaboration with other departments at NYU. The Game Center began offering the minor in game design in 2011, and the MFA was introduced in the fall of 2012.

Minor in Game Design

Students wishing to study game design at the undergraduate level may do so by enrolling in this 18-credit minor, which can be completed as part of a bachelor’s degree program in any discipline. All students enrolled in this minor complete 12 core Game Center classes, including one mandatory introductory class.

Master of Fine Arts in Game Design

This 2-year program gives students hands-on experience in video game creation and explores the history and theoretical foundations of the medium. Four specializations are available: game design, programming, visual design or criticism. All first-semester students in this program complete four introductory classes. In the second year, students take electives and complete a collaborative thesis project in game development.

Other School Options

Long Island University (LIU) is another option for students seeking a game design degree in NYC. It offers degree programs on two different campuses. Students at LIU – Post may pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Art and Design or a Master of Arts in Digital Game Design and Development, while students at LIU – Brooklyn may earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Computer Art.
