Free Websites for Small Businesses

If you’re a small business owner, it’s easier than you may have heard to establish a web presence.

Google will help you get your small business up online

After launching the Get Your Business Online program several years ago, Google has now rebranded the effort and is calling it Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map. By logging on and selecting your state, you can have access to the following:

  • Free, easy-to-build website
  • Free customized domain name
  • Free web hosting for one year
  • Free online tools and training
  • Learn how to put more information about your business into Google
  • Get your company verified for Google searches
  • Add information such as location, hours of operation
  • Add photos to enhance the listing
  • Get a diagnostic tool to see how you can improve yourlisting and visibility

After the first year, you’ll have to pay $16 annually for your domain name and $6 a month for hosting. Additional email support is available after 12 months for a fee.

So the easy part is getting your site up and running. The hard part is getting traffic to your site and updating your info online all the time. Google is hosting free seminars across the country to help you with that part.

For example, if you’re a restaurant owner, you might want to post your daily special each day. If you’re a retail storefront, you’d probably want to post at least a weekly special. A static website that doesn’t get updated won’t engage people. They’ll visit once or twice online and never come back again.

Other options to get your small business online

While I like the Google options, my new favorite choice for small business websites is a pay service called SquareSpace.com. My second favorite choice is SmallBusiness.Yahoo.com. Check them out!

    Phase 1: Website and Social Media

    First priority is to establish a basic web presence through the creation of a website and social media accounts. The website will consist of a home page, plus up to 4 additional pages (one for each of 3 service areas, and a contact page if required). The website template will be flexible for future expansion, and will be the first step in establishing consistent brand styles.

    Also included in construction of the website is a Content Management System. This will allow the Client to update page content using a simple word processing-style interface, without requiring knowledge of advanced web code.

    Hosting, Email, and Domain Name

    Phase 1 is quoted in this estimate.

    Phase 2: Content and Newsletter

    After the website is up and running, there is an opportunity to build and engage an audience by expanding website content to include frequently updated editorial content. This could include:

    The website will require setup of a hosting account, which provides the servers where the website will live in addition to email accounts. A domain name may also need to be purchased if that has not been done yet. Setup of the hosting account and installation of the website by the Designer is included in the estimate. However, initial and ongoing subscription fees for hosting services will be billed by the hosting vendor directly to the Client.

    • News and opinion articles

    • Book summaries and reviews

    For the sake of economy and flexibility in posting different types of article, it is recommended a blog system be used for free content.

    A template for a regular email newsletter can be set up in a bulk emailing service such as Constant Contact or MailChimp. Past newsletters may be archived on the website.

    Phase 3: Online Sales and Client Area

    To generate revenue, an ecommerce system can be installed on the website to sell documents and products. The ecommerce system should be able to handle one-time sales using a shopping cart system, plus the capability for subscription-based access to a restricted area of the site.

    Clients could also be granted free access to premium products as an added value. The ecommerce system will also be able to handle discounts and coupon codes.

    A client communication and document repository can be created. A separate area will be created for each client, with access restricted to authorized individuals only.

    Phase 3 is currently speculative and can be estimated when project scope is better defined.

    Phase 4: Multimedia, Advertising and SEO

    Content offerings can be expanded with video and audio content. Designer does not offer multimedia production services, but can refer the Client to production resources, as well as set up services for hosting and promoting the content. Multimedia may be offered free, or sold by subscription or pay-per-view.

    Options for online and traditional media advertising and marketing can be explored.

    Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

    Though the website will be built for maximum compatibility with search engines such as Google and Bing, there is an opportunity for advanced Search Engine Optimization to fine-tune content and site structure for better search exposure. Designer does not offer SEO services, but can refer the Client to SEO resources and will work with these sources to effect any required website changes.

    Phase 4 is currently speculative and can be estimated when project scope is better defined.

    Web Design and Development Estimate

    This document is an estimate only and does not represent a binding agreement between the Client and Designer. A contract will be provided upon acceptance of this estimate.

    Final text and custom photography will be supplied by the Client. The Designer does not provide copywriting, editing or photography services.

    Deliverables requested for a same-day turnaround will be subject to a 100% rush fee.

    This estimate covers design and construction of the website through the launch phase. It does not include ongoing maintenance of the website, which is a service the Designer does not provide. The Designer may assist the client in finding a resource for ongoing website maintenance.

    Additional Cost Allowances

    Additional services or alterations outside the scope of the contract will be quoted as needed at a base rate of $75/hour, with a 1/2 hour minimum. The Designer may also provide estimates for the following additional services if they are required for completion of the project:

    • Recurring fees for website hosting and email services.

    • Purchase of specific fonts.

    • Purchase of specific photography.

    • Purchase of specific software.

    • Purchase of specific third party services.

    Here are seven ways to promote your business online that won’t cost you a dime:

    1. Use the three big local listing services

    Registering your business with Google Places allows it to be found more easily on Google searches and it shows up on Google Maps. All you have to do is fill out the form and register, then get your business verified through their confirmation process, which can be done either with a phone call or snail mail. Yahoo! also has a big database of businesses called Yahoo! Local. It’s free, and is certainly worth the few minutes it takes to set up. Microsoft’s Bing has a similar service that’s easy to sign up for.

    2. Embrace social media

    Social media isn’t just a tool to gain exposure—it has now become a necessary time investment for every business to make. You can tie in ads and offers on your Facebook page and have a direct channel with your customers on Twitter. Networking on LinkedIn—both at the personal and company level—can be another way to help your startup.

    3. Start a blog

    A blog not only helps your company get its name out through followers, but is a way to connect with your consumers more directly. But remember that one of the major keys of blogging is to keep your stream updated as frequently as you can. A dormant, abandoned blog is worth nothing.

    4. Put up multimedia on YouTube and Flickr

    YouTube provides a free way to distribute creative promotional videos, but in order to succeed you must put up content that people want to view and are relevant to your business—a simple ad will not work. A Flickr profile can also help by giving you one place to compile all the photos for your business, and allows you to link back to your website.

    5. SEO your company website

    Search engine optimization cannot be underestimated in the world of constant Googling. Pick up a book or head over to an online how-to-guide on SEO and make sure your site is primed for performance on search engines.

    6. Press releases

    Every time your business does something newsworthy, don’t hesitate to shoot off a press release—maybe folks will pick up on it. They’re a powerful media tool to use to help generate publicity, and having free distribution of them is a bonus. There are dozens of websites out there that you can use for your press releases, such as PRLog and 24/7 Press Release .

    7. Join a relevant online community and contribute

    Every niche has communities online that you can get involved in. But just signing up for a forum and posting every once in a while about your business isn’t beneficial for anyone, and will likely just annoy people.     Starting A Free Online Business, Step by Step

    Every day, thousands of people search for information on starting a free online business. They are looking at online business systems, searching for free online business opportunities, and basically looking for legitimate home business ideas so that they can work from home .

    That’s what I do, and I love it. That’s a photo of me above. It was actually taken several years ago – this is my 12th year working from home. And it was taken at a friends house too. I love being able to work anytime, anywhere!

    Anyway- yesterday I had opportunity to meet two such ladies who were searching for that very information, and who happen to live in my town. They found me on MySpace. so we talked there and then decided to meet for lunch and discuss what it takes to start an online business.

    I’ll share the same details with you here that I shared with them over lunch, which were simple steps for starting a free online business. I cant share the fabulous spinach salad, or the great conversation we had, but hopefully this will prove useful to you if you are searching for internet business ideas yourself.

    Home Business Ideas

    There are so many home business opportunities and internet business ideas, that it can be a little overwhelming to figure out where you should start. We talked about a few of the different business models – from ecommerce sites that use wholesale dropshipping. to offering a service or starting your own blog.

    You can make money online in a variety of ways. Just a few examples include: sell your own product, offer services, sell advertising on your website or blog, or promote other people’s products and/or services.

    That last option is called Affiliate Marketing. It’s basically commission-based sales, and I compare it to the offline model of selling Kirby vacuum cleaners. When you make sales, you make money. You can sign up as an affiliate for a company and they will give you an Affiliate Link. You promote that link, and anyone that goes through your link to make a purchase will be tracked – resulting in a commission to you for that sale.

    This is the internet business model that I focused on during our conversation over lunch yesterday. I actually use a variety of internet business models to make money online myself, but Affiliate Marketing seemed to be a perfect match for my new friends.

    Some business models are active, while others are more passive. An active business model requires a more active role on your part. A membership site for example is high maintenance. If you offer services, then you need to interact with clients and take phone calls on a regular basis. I prefer passive income models, which allow you more freedom and flexibility.

    That’s not to say that active business models cant be incredibly profitable and successful, just that something more passive seemed like a good fit once I got to know her a bit.

    To clarify, when I say passive I dont mean that you wont have to work at it. I think we’ve all kind of figured out by now that “get rich quick schemes” dont really work. And we were discussing real, legitimate ways to make consistent income online. Not spotty one-off ways to make a few bucks here and there.

    We discussed the realistic investment of time and money, and I confessed that I put a lot of time in upfront to get each of my internet business models up and running (some more than others). I explained that you could invest money to get sales rolling in quicker, or you could invest time (up to 6-12 months even) to get your sales up to a good level on a consistent basis. You’ll make money along the way of course, but geting that consistent income is the key.

    Going that route, you can get started for less than $10. Yes, literally.

    The passive part comes in after you have your affiliate site up and running – once you’ve done that groundwork. With affiliate marketing the merchant is handling orders, shipping and customer service. All you have to do is send them traffic through your affiliate link.

    Once your site is up and running, you’ve set up your systems (such as a newsletter, blog, or whatever fits your model), and you’re driving traffic to the site. most of the “work” from there can be automated, and maintained in very little time. For example, I can usually run a site like that in as little as 5 hours a week. That frees you up to create more just like it, and duplicate your income

    Starting a Free Online Business

    I mentioned above that you can get started for less than $10. I know that a lot of people are interested in starting a free online business, but this small investment is well worth it. Especially if you are serious about making a consistent income with a real online business.

    You could actually spend a lot more than ten bucks, but if you take my advice you’ll save a lot of money – and still end up with a solid internet business model.

    What are the steps in creating an online business?

    Your first step is to decide what niche you will target. Meaning: what are you going to sell, or what topic is your website going to be about? You might start with the product, or you might start with the topic – it doesnt really matter as long as you get that initial idea.

    To help you, here are some of my own mini-tutorials on keyword research. Keywords are simply the words or phrases that people are searching for online. If you read through the links on that page, you’ll have a much better understanding of how you can research keywords to choose topics or products.

    Once you decide what your website will be about, you’ll need two things: a domain name and a hosting account. The domain name is your website address (like www.ClickNewz.com is mine) and the hosting account is the space online where you will put your website.

    I use GoDaddy.com to register my domain names. For hosting, I use HostGator – they allow you to host multiple domains or sites on the one account (saving you money when you start duplicating!) and they have tons of cool features that save you time & money too.

    The domain name will cost you $8.95 for the first year. The HostGator account is $9.95/month, but I have a coupon code you can use to get your first month free. And that’s all you really need upfront to get started – so start up cost is actually less than $9, and then 9.95/month.

    So you’ve picked a topic for your website, you registered a domain name, you set up your hosting account. now you need to create a website. (This is the hard part for most people)

    It might be tempting to just hire a web designer, and that’s certainly an option, but you really want to learn some things yourself if you are going to be running an internet business. Creating your own website will also save you a lot of money.

    You’ll find some tools in your hosting account to help you develop your website. You can also find all kinds of free resources online by doing a search. If you decide you need some help, consider hiring someone to design a template for you – not an entire website. Its much cheaper to just outsource the template design and do the rest of the work yourself.

    You’re going to run into questions along the way. But dont let that stop you! I have an online business discussion forum where you can stop in and ask any questions you have, and get help from others who have already gone through these steps themselves.
