    Santander has staged an about-turn and will no longer withdraw its “free banking forever” account from 230,000 small business customers.

    The original decision, first revealed in late July, upset some customers who thought the bank was reneging on an unbreakable promise to them.

    They would have had to pay either £7.50 or £12.50 a month for a business bank account that was previously free.

    Santander had previously said it was within its right to change the account.

    But less than two months after first announcing the change, it has reversed its policy.

    “After listening to feedback from our existing customers, a small number of whom do not feel their businesses would benefit from these changes, we will be retaining the fee-free option for existing customers,” a spokesman said.

    ‘Wonderful news’

    A letter will be sent next week to the customers telling them of the change.

    One factor that may have weighed on the bank’s mind is that every one of the affected customers could have taken their complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

    This would have cost the bank £500 each time in FOS administration fees and could, theoretically, have landed it with a bill of £115m if every customer had taken this route.

    Barry Daniels, a Santander account holder from Hampshire who runs a wedding car service, said he was very pleased by the latest development.

    “That’s absolutely wonderful; that’s quite a success, they have done the honourable thing,” he told the BBC.

    Mr Daniels had planned to complain to the FOS and so had Dinny Reed, who runs a honey farm near the village of Kingsley in Hampshire.

    “It’s wonderful, fantastic, news and a real triumph for the little guy against the big banks,” she said.

    “It shows it is worth protesting.”

    Wrong in law?

    Santander could have been in for a very uncomfortable contest over the legitimacy of its suggested change.

    Not only did the marketing brochures state that the accounts would be “free forever” in big letters, some had even spelled out the limited circumstances in which that promise might be altered.

    “We guarantee that unless there are any changes to the law or banking regulations, or any new taxes relating to bank charges, you will benefit from free day-to-day business banking forever,” one brochure seen by the BBC said.

    Some disgruntled customers had been thinking of taking the bank to the small claims court to sue for the return of any charge that was eventually imposed.

    One such customer was John Pettman, a commercial landlord from Whitstable in Kent and also a semi-retired lawyer, who is still annoyed.

    “They were trying to con me, it was yet another example of the inappropriate actions of large banks,” he said.

    “In my opinion, on a point of law, the “free banking forever” was an entrenched term and condition that can’t be altered by the other term and condition that says they can vary it.

    “I trust they now accept that they were not only wrong in law, but also wrong on the question of morality,” he added.

    Mis-sold policies?

    If a court had rejected this legal argument, Mr Pettman had been prepared to take his case to the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

    He argued that the bank must have mis-sold the accounts if its marketing promise, displayed in big letters on its brochures, could be subsequently over-ruled by the small print.

    David Price, who runs a property management business in Folkestone in Kent, had also planned to pursue this line of argument.

    He has four of Santander’s free business accounts, as well as personal ones, and was prepared to take all his money and move it elsewhere if the bank had gone ahead with its plan to levy charges.

    “I feel these charges were not justified, it was not within their terms and conditions, it was an external guarantee,” he argued.

    “If they had reneged on this guarantee, I think they would have been guilty of mis-selling.

    “I am pleased they have honoured their initial promise and trust it will be permanent,” he added

    Better service

    The bank’s explanation for trying to levy charges on its free accounts was that its own market research had shown that its customers with such accounts – largely inherited from the Abbey and Alliance Leicester – had in fact wanted to pay, but for an upgraded account with more facilities.

    The new accounts with charges are the ones that have been on offer to new customers since November 2011, after the free ones were withdrawn for new customers.

    Santander is adamant that the new accounts are very good value for money.

    “Our free offer allowed no access to branches or additional support for business customers,” the bank said.

    “Feedback – both from existing customers and non-customers – increasingly told us they wanted more access to local business support; more transparency; more competitive and fixed costs; more interest on their current account and easy access to funding for their businesses.

    “We will, of course, be happy to upgrade any customer who would like to make the most of the additional benefits offered by the fixed-fee account,” the bank added.

    You don’t need to spend thousands raising the profile of your business – there are lots of tips and tricks you can use that are pretty much free if you want to make your business more well known. Here are some of the best.

    Get listed in online directories

    Joshua Uebergang, marketing manager with e-commerce outfit Online Visions says listing your business on internet directories is a great way to attract attention to your enterprise for nix.

    Go to Google then search “your industry + directory” and “your service area + directory”. Then list yourself in relevant lists. There are also plenty of free sites you must be listed in like TrueLocal and Brownbook. Some of these will give you free traffic to your website. By submitting your link and details to these sites, you also rank higher in Google to hopefully land even more free visitors to your site,” he explains.

    Uebergang also suggest posting messages in forums related to your field. “Search Google for “your products + forum” or “your services + forum”. People are in forums because they have problems your business can fix. Help out by sharing good advice and then linking to your business. Be careful to follow forum guidelines by not spamming.”

    There are lots of free tools you can use on the internet to pump up your business’s profile, but don’t forget local marketing strategies as well. Many people have forgotten traditional marketing tools have stood the test of time. So these tactics often hold more potential than the marketing tools everyone seems to be using.

    For instance, Fiona Hoppe, who heads marketing for Servcorp Virtual and Serviced Offices, suggests contributing a door prize to local events.

    Sponsoring local events usually means you’ll end up with your brand on the event collateral and web site and be exposed to the entire database to which marketing for the event is sent.

    “And all eyes will be on your fantastic prize as it’s drawn. Not to mention the winner will gloat about their lucky windfall. Don’t be stingy with the prizes, you want them to grab attention,” Hoppe says.

    Kate Engler, who runs PR outfit The Publicity Princess, agrees there’s power in local promotions. “Don’t underestimate local papers – in fact, maximise them. Many stories start out here and end up in major metro newspapers, on radio or even TV – we see this happen a lot,” says Engler.

    “Be on the lookout for what’s in the news you can piggy back on – recently a relationship expert in our community picked up on a comment by Miranda Kerr and put out a media release about how right Miranda is.”

    Kate Ward, account director, Ignite PR, is also a fan of keeping it local. “Visit high traffic areas in your local area to showcase your product or service and give out free samples. Alternatively, contact office managers at large businesses in your area and offer discounted goods or services to employees,” says Ward.

    “A beauty client of mine took her team to various publishing houses and did free treatments in the cafeteria – they got numerous mentions across Facebook and Twitter and were featured in the beauty pages of several high profile consumer glossies.”

    Many people think PR and publicity is a free and easy way to generate media coverage for your business. But there are so many people using this approach, only the really skilful get their name in lights. Like Jo Ucukalo CEO of Handle My Complaint, which resolves complaints for people.

    Here are his tips for writing press releases. “A press release doesn’t flow like an article. Aim for one page only and make sure it’s newsworthy. Start with the news, then mention your business. The first 10 words are vital – they are what make the journalist want to read more,” he says, adding that the idea is to include a summary of your business at the end of the release.

    Similarly, Sarah Young, director of Silver Leaf PR says if you’re hoping to receive press coverage for your brand or product, really get to know each and every publication and the sections they offer.

    “There’s nothing worse then pitching your brand to the wrong journalist, it’s a waste of their time, and yours. Also, get to know each relevant journalist and what they require in terms of imagery or information and don’t forget they have deadlines,” she says.

    Of course, the good old PR stunt never gets tired – as long as it’s skilfully executed. “Stunts can sometimes get good traction – I once ran a fashion show to launch a flower website with student designers making the dresses from flowers – the cost was the flower. We made all major news stations,” says marketing whizz Kimberly Palmer from Brazen Productions.

    Above all, don’t just try one free technique and rest on your laurels – the idea is to use all the tools and everything else you can find to draw attention to your business. In the world of PR and marketing more is more is more.

    There are so many ways to advertise for free online. One of my favorite ways to advertise online for free is on Craigslist. Craigslist is a free classified ad site that is growing and getting more popular as time goes by. It’s fairly easy to use. You can use HTML in your advertisement, which is definitely a plus. Make sure you read the guidelines very carefully on how to use Craigslist, because your advertisement can get flagged and removed pretty easily if you don’t follow the rules.

    Another great way to advertise online is through a social network site. Facebook is pretty popular. It’s not hard to use and I know of a way to get $50.00 in free advertisements. After you join facebook and set up an account, you can join the Visa Business Network through facebook. After you join the visa business network through facebook they will e-mail you a promo code for $50.00 in free advertising. Once you get the promo, click on advertising way down on the bottom of the facebook page. All you have to do is set up your campaign, click on the funding source link and enter in the promo code. Make sure you sign up to the visa business network through facebook with the same e-mail address that you signed up to facebook with. If you don’t do that, it will not work. The cool thing about this advertising is you can target specifically who you want to see the advertisement according to demographics, interests, age, sex, and keywords. It’s pretty effective and you can’t beat FREE. You can also join groups or create groups on facebook related to your business. I created a group and advertised that group for free. I got over 1,000 people to join the group. Once they all joined I was able to send them all a private message very easily, which resulted in some money in my pocket.

    Blogging is also a good way to advertise. Start up a blog about your business. You don’t really have to blog only about your business. You can blog about news related to the type of business you do, to capture a broader range of potential customers. You can blog about anything you want. The more you update it with rich content and keywords(don’t over do it with the keywords), the more you have a chance of getting noticed. What I like about twitter is that you can do a search for whatever you want (example search: dog bones – this will pull up all the people tweeting about dog bones, if you are in the dog bone business you can follow them and maybe they will follow you, which can result in a lead and maybe a sale). Once you get followers you can tweet about anything you want them to see, you can also send them private messages. Don’t over do it with advertising your business on twitter, as that can lead to people unfollowing you.

    Forums and message boards. You can join forums and message boards related to your business to advertise for free. It’s pretty cool because some posts show up in search engines which can lead to some online traffic your way. Some forums have certain rules about advertising and posting links. Make sure you always read the rules and guidelines before posting.

If you have a website, you can submit your link to a website directory. Some of them may want you to post a link to their directory on your own site (link exchange). This can help you out in two ways.

    It creates a link to your site from another website which helps you in the SEO (search engine optimization) category. It might just boost your ranking in the search engines such as google, yahoo, and MSN.

These sites can be used to share just about any webpage or article (feel free to share this article so it can help others out as well and to familiarize yourself with them). You can integrate most of the techniques I talked about in this article with social bookmarking. You can share pages from your website, classified ad, social networking site (like facebook), blog posts, and the website directory. I would recommend adding the “add this” firefox plug in which makes it easier to share you content on social book marking sites. With this plugin you can submit your content to over 200 social book marking sites easily. Digg is a very good one to use, I recommend digg if you are going to use just one.

    Be patient with free advertising. You need either time of money to advertise online. If you don’t have either then make some.
