8 Easy, Low-Cost Businesses Any College Student Can Start

Hi there, you can call me Aaron. I’m cofounder at livecube and I’m based in Greater New York City Area.

Let’s face it: summer internships aren’t the best route for all students. Some with an entrepreneurial side and a business-savvy mindset just need more—both in terms of real-life experience and dollars. For students who want a high return, low barrier to entry, freedom to be their own boss and something that will look great on an MBA application, here are nine low-cost starter businesses that college students can start.

Food Cart

There are only three things you need to create a food cart: a cart/kiosk, a license to sell and food to cook. Sites like GigMasters.com offer food carts for rent across the U.S. or you could set up your own table. The key is to finding a good location such as near a college campus or shopping area. Permits range depending on the location. For instance, a permit in Philadelphia is $150, while a permit for New York City is $200. Hot dogs, baked goods and tacos sell well due to low-cost supplies and minimal labor.

Avon Sales Rep

If you’re good with sales and you want to be your own boss without the added costs of starting your own business, being a sales rep for Avon is a good bet. With just $10, you’re on the way to getting things started and unlike other direct sales companies, the starter kit is included in this fee. Set your own hours, a space for yourself in your house and run your business as you please.

SAT Tutoring

No one is more qualified to tutor prospective college students on the SATs than a college student who did well on it. SAT prep books cost between $20 and $30. Set aside money for advertising in your local paper and put up your own ads in public places. Set your hourly rate at a reasonable price. TestMagic charges $85 per hour while others go as high as $200 per hour.

T-shirt Company

Raymond Lei, creator of ooShirts. created his own custom T-shirt business while in college. If you’ve got a funny sense of humor or great design style, starting your own shirt company is a great venture. After you’ve drafted a few ideas, the next step is to find a printer. Depending on how many shirts you’re printing, costs can run high, but as long as the demand is even higher, you’ll continue to be profitable. Think about getting a stand at a local flea market or street festival to boost sales.

Moving Service

All you need to begin your own moving services is a moving truck, a valid license and some brawny friends. U-Haul trucks typically between $20 to 40 per day (plus mileage) and most movers charge about $200 to $400 for a local move. Advertise your “man with a van” service on Craigslist and on public bulletin boards. Also use the Web by posting on Facebook and Foursquare, as well as asking friends or clients to review your business on Yelp. You can also find dollies, hand-trucks, blankets, and other moving supplies on Craigslist.

Childcare

Starting your own babysitting service can be easy, as long as you invest in the proper resources and become qualified. First, obtain a childcare license which can cost up to $100. You should be first aid and CPR trained, and these certificates cost about $50 (though some places, like the Red Cross, offer this for free). Advertise your service locally, or on trusted babysitter websites such as Sittercity.com and Care.com. Your best chance of success is by having a flexible schedule, such as availability on evenings and weekends. Parents will be especially impressed with students majoring in education, child psychology or art therapy.

Arts and Crafts

If you’re an artist, selling your work can be the perfect entrepreneurial venture for you. You can set up a profile on Etsy and sell your work there, as well as at arts and crafts festivals and school campuses. It might be helpful to have a website you can direct people to for photos of your work and contact information. Look at the most popular items on Etsy and at craft fairs, such as jewelry, hats, clothing and other objects. And to keep costs low, look for materials that can be repurposed (and possibly even donated by local businesses—”reclaimed” is hot these days).

Website Design

Almost every small business wishes it had a better website. If you have skills and experience with HTML, WordPress, Flash or other site-building platforms (and some graphic design chops), you can freelance your work for a hefty profit. If you want a simple projects, logos can be sold for over $300 apiece. Create packages in which you offer bundled services, such as revamping a site and starting a blog for a flat fee. Build a portfolio of mock-up home pages and bring your iPad to prospect meetings to show it off.

How To Start A Blog And Make Money In 5 Easy Steps #business #law

How To Start A Blog And Make Money

Blogging has opened up a whole new world to online marketing, if you want to know how to start a blog and make money online then follow this step by step guide.

Starting a blog has never been easier. I have created and managed dozens of blogs over the past few years and I have gathered quite a lot of experience in that time. There are lots of ways to make money blogging but I ll cover what I have found to be the best ones right here, but first I am going to run through how to set up your own blog today. You can actually follow along and do it right now!

If you want your own online business you are going to need a blog or site! Creating a blog is really easy and there is no need for any complicated coding, HTML. CSS skills or anything technical.

Step 1 Decide on a blogging platform

There are lots of different platforms which you can build your blog on. But the most popular by far is WordPress. I have used WordPress for years and it does everything you could possibly want. Some of the leading websites in the world are built on WordPress including this blog!

The last I heard, WordPress has been downloaded over 72 Million times, so that in itself should be enough to tell you that it is the best platform to use.

The advantages of WordPress are:

  • There are thousands of free themes and layouts to choose from
  • WordPress uses plugins, there is a plugin for almost everything, so no need for coding
  • Easily add images and multimedia
  • Simple to install (takes 2 minutes)

With WordPress you can create what is called a self hosted blog , and this is what we are going to be doing. This means that we can use our own hosting and most importantly, our own domain name. If you use the free blogging platform on blogger.com or Tumbler.com you will be given a subdomain, which will look something like this (startablog.tumblr.com). This also restricts you to many of the features of hosting your own blog.

It also gives your blog more credit if it is self hosted on your own domain, and you have full ownership of it. For this reason I ALWAYS self host my blogs.

Step 2 Choosing A Domain Name And Host

You want to put a bit of thought into selecting your domain name. You can choose to use your business name, your own name or a domain that contains keywords related to the type of site you are building. My advice is to choose something that is brand-able and easy to remember, keep it short if possible.

There are lots of Domain registrar s where you can check and register a domain, here are a few that I have used:

Where To Host My Blog

There are hundreds of hosting companies out there, I ve tried many of them and encountered bad experiences with almost all of them at some point. I then came across BlueHost. Since I started using their hosting I have never had any problems. Their support is fantastic, their servers are fast and reliable and best of all, they are cheap.

I think it s around $4.95 per month. which is great value. Having a reliable host is the foundation for your whole online business, so don t get it wrong.

You can register a BlueHost account right now. and continue following my step by step guide.

Almost forgot; you can host as many sites as you want on just 1 BlueHost account.

Step 3 How To Install WordPress In Less Than 2 Minutes

This is the part where a lot of people are afraid of. It can seem daunting, the thought of installing WP and setting everything up correctly! Luckily BlueHost have a quick 1 click installation.

Simply login to your BlueHost account:

You should have set up a domain when you opened the account

Scroll to the wordPress Installation Tab

Now Click The install Button

Now simply select your domain where you want to install WordPress and fill in the remaining

The application will install WordPress and all of the files and database in just a few seconds.

Here is a video to show you the process:

Step 4 My Installation Is Complete. Now What?

Congratulations, you now have your very own blog hosted on your own domain. Now if you have never used WordPress before you are going to have to learn how it all works.

There is far too much to explain in this post, so I have found a few links which will take you through the process of setting up your new blog:

Step 5 How to make money from your blog

Making money from your blog can be a difficult task. It took me a long time before I started making any money from blogs, mainly because I was inexperienced and didn t really know what I was doing at the time. Luckily I gained a lot of experience from my failures and now I can pass that experience on to you.

There are tons of ways to monetize your blog to make money, some of them include things like,

  • Adsense Get paid when people click on ads
  • selling a product
  • Selling other peoples products as affiliates
  • selling a service
  • blog advertising,
  • Drop Shipping Selling physical products that you don t actually own

These are the main areas to focus on and I have used all of these myself to make money on my blogs.

The first thing you need to determine is what your blog is all about . If for example you are writing a blog that provides a lot of information, similar to this blog, then you may want to think about using Google Adsense or selling advertising space on your blog.

Drop Shipping For Success

If you are thinking of basing your blog around certain products (something like a blog about PC s and Tablets) then you would benefit from selling products. For this you would need to use Drop Shipping.

Here is the best Drop Shipping Wholesale directory that I have used – SaleHoo

Ever wondered how people make a fortune on Ebay? Here is the answer They use Drop shipping. I have done it myself with Ebay and Amazon .

The great thing about Drop shipping is I DONT HAVE TO BUY THE ITEMS until the customer buys them!!

So you can open an online store with absolutely no stock, and then when a customer purchases an Item, you simply order it from the drop shipper and have it delivered straight to the customer!

Summary

I hope this guide has provided you with some good information to get you started. You should now have your WordPress blog set up and you now have the knowledge to know how to start a blog and make money anytime you like. So the next step in the process is to take action. Taking action is the best piece of advise I was given. It s no good reading posts like this if you don t take action. If you haven t already done so, get your Bluehost account and start building your blog!

A Soy Candle Making Business is Not Easy #government #grants

#candle making business

#

A Soy Candle Making Business is Not Easy

Psssst My Facebook Business Page E-Course is 60% all through August!

Want to get your candle business out there on social media and grow your following? FB is an excellent, and free place to start!

You love candles. You love them so much that you think you want to start a business making them. They are fun to make, it s true! And it s so lovely to have your house constantly be filled with those wonderful, delightful fragrances!

I myself, did not realize all the work that goes into a soy candle business, or any candle business for that matter, because you soon realize that it is not just about making the candles. I don t want to discourage you. No. Because a soy candle making business can be a nice profitable home business for you! But I want to make sure you realize all that goes into it, because if you are just starting out, or just thinking about starting, then you don t know all the work that goes into candle making and marketing and selling.

This is the reason I decided to close my business after 4 years. If I didn t have kids I may have stuck with it, but the fact that I have 3 boys (I only had 2 when I first started my soy candle business) and was working my business and trying to homeschool, and on top of that, living in a small home, I had to make a choice on what my priorities were and I decided I wasn t enjoying the whole candle business all that much anymore even though business kept growing, so I closed the doors. In fact it was because of the growing customers that I decided to call it quits. The more customers the more busy it got and I didn t have anyone to help me with it all!

That does not mean that you can t do it, and enjoy it though! Everyone is different and this business can work for you!

Below is a rundown of all the things involved with making, marketing, and selling soy candles. If you can outsource a few of these things, it will make your business so much less stressful and you can focus more on your candle making!

  • Making soy candles from scratch (melting wax, preparing containers, placing wicks, cooling time, thinking up new fragrances, testing, testing, testing, cleaning up your mess, cleaning your tools)
  • Ordering supplies
  • Putting on tags and warning labels and any other decorations
  • Packaging your soy candles (mainly votives, tarts and tealights)
  • Packaging for shipping
  • Printing shipping labels
  • Creating and maintaining a website
  • Answering questions
  • Marketing your business whether online or offline
  • Preparing for and traveling to craft shows
  • Did I mention maintaining your website.
  • Doing taxes
  • Thinking and thinking and thinking about this, that and everything to do with soy candles!

Now, like I said, if you can afford to pay someone to do some of those things above, or you have a partner to help, a good size kitchen(better yet a separate area to work), then you will probably have a much easier time of it!

I know I might have caused some doubt in your mind of whether you want to even try this business, but really, you won t know until you try. I loved it the first 2 years, it s just that I had so many other things I was trying to do too, so the candle business just didn t end up fitting with the lifestyle I wanted.

But I hope I ve made you seriously consider some things and if you think you want to give it a go, then go for it! Procrastinating will get you nowhere, and, like I said, you won t know until you try!

Until next time,

What if you had a tool that could help you get started making soy candles for your business right now?

Would you like to save a ton of time that you could be using to work on starting your business instead of searching all over trying to find how to make this kind of soy candle, or that kind, or how to find the best wick, what supplier to use and so on, etc etc ?

That is exactly why I created my new eBook The Soy Candle Making Book You can download the book and have everything you need to make amazing soy candles that your customers will love!

No need to go searching around the net for every piece of information because it s all right here!

Sewing Classes: A Cool Business Idea – So Sew Easy #international #business #news

Sewing Classes: A Cool Business Idea

In the last couple of years, sewing is getting new and enthusiastic interest from kids and teens, so much so that starting a sewing classes business is becoming a cool idea! We ve written a lot before sewing for profit. sewing and selling and how to transform your sewing passion into something profitable. Here s what I think is another great sewing business idea.

There is no doubt that the growing interest in sewing amongst young people is enhanced by the popularity of the long running Project Runway TV show. a popular reality TV show where new and promising designers compete by designing and creating their own clothes. There is also a growing trend in turning old clothing into teen accessories like tote bags and the like. Plus if you ve been browsing the internet lately, you will likely notice that there s a subculture online that is dedicated to sewing and people are linking their sewing projects to their Facebook pages; there s a lot of interest in sewist s blogs too. The takeover of Information Technology has definitely helped to make sewing cool, accessible and popular today.

So what do you need to start offering sewing classes?

This is a relatively new business idea. While there are plenty of online classes such as at Craftsy and Creativelive. these lack the personalized approach that I have in mind. I think sewing is best learned in a one-on-one or small group environment with coaching and customization if required. This is how we ve been learning (and teaching) for thousands of years. It is certainly how I, and probably you, learned how to sew.

With an initial capital outlay of $2,000 $10,000, you can get the ball rolling. Sewing classes can be a home based business and can also be operated part time. The potential income is estimated to be between 25 to 35 US dollars per hour and this rate could still go up.

You can market your sewing class using traditional means of advertising as well as online. To start with a small capital outlay, you can also go into a joint venture with a local fabric store and offer sewing classes in the evenings and weekends with them. An added advantage here is that you can profit from the store’s existing customer base. Additional revenue can also be generated by selling patterns and other sewing notions to your students.

Sewing Classes success story

Here’s a success story in Minneapolis that I want to share with you: Miss Gianopoulos, who s offered sewing classes for a number of years, has seen such an increase in the number of kids and teens in her class that she decided to open a school vacation camp called Sewtropolis. Her sewing classes are now available to all ages and skill levels. She is also selling patterns, notions and fabrics to her students. Originally intended for adults, she found out that kids and teenagers are highly interested in learning how to sew as a creative outlet.

For sewing students aged eight and above, they should have the patience to work on sewing projects and know how to use a sewing machine. Students are also allowed to rent time on a sewing machine at the rate of $5 per hour if they don’t have a sewing machine at home.

Gianopolous has also noticed that math skills and sewing go together because sewing needs careful attention to detail and it also involves measurements and fractions. This means enrolling children in sewing class will also increase their knowledge in mathematics and problem solving.

How to make people interested in sewing:

Success in business means you are fulfilling some kind of need in the market. There is a need for people to become autonomous in their finances and in the use of their time.

Curiosity killed the cat or so the saying goes. I know how to sew but every time I see someone in a shop or a fabric store making something, I stop to watch. I am fascinated by the amount of people that do the same. Like me, many find that there is always something knew to learn or a better easier way to do things. So volunteering your time to teach a demonstration class will pay up in time.

Schools:

Schools in your district are a wealth of potential customers. After school activities keep kids busy until mom comes home giving children a great way to hone in their hand eye coordination and improving their attention span.

Community service support groups:

Nothing is more attractive to people than to share a common hobby, and sewing allows a great opportunity to talk whilst doing something creative. It s also a great way to conduct a class tailored to many different skills levels. Approaching your council for space availability rules an regulations would be a very practical way to utilize underused resources.

As we have written about before, sewing helps fight depression. so it would certainly be in the interest of your community to help get people sewing!

Church Halls:

S ince time immemorial the church premises have been a point of gathering for town s people to come together and many churches enjoy the privilege of open spaces and an empty hall in which you can accommodate a sewing class, talk to you local parishioner for more information.

Project Based Sewing Clubs at Your Home:

There is really nothing more exciting for a sewer than to get together with other sewers sharing a common goal. We know many groups who have used our popular Conference Tote Bag Pattern Sew-Along as the basis of their first group project. We certainly encourage that as long as each participant gets their own log-in and account.

Also, while it is impossible to sew, text and post in social media at the same time, you can be sure that our young generation is still very much interested in learning the old fashioned art of sewing. Believe it or not, even they get tired of sitting on their phones all day!

I hope this give you some ideas and motivation to start your own sewing classes business. Good luck and do let us know how you go in the comments below.

Caren marks says:

I have had fantastic luck in the past teaching homeschooling students sewing classes. You have the that they can schedule classes during the day if needed and are used to being very well behaved and can focus on a project much easier than some students can. Also remember homeschooling groups when you are cleaning out your closet of fabric and scraps that you want to get rid of because sending a huge bag to a group of homeschooling students creates a frenzy of excitement and happiness.

Teaching is so satisfying. I energizes me. There is a big demand for child classes. I have a full series on How to Run Your Own Summer Sewing Camp and it can be adapted for after school classes as well. http://www.thelostapron.com/2016/07/sewing-camp.html

Say hello to end-to-end business management

Brought our company into the 21st century!

Charles | CTO. ACI Alloys, Inc. This amazing, robust, flexible and reliable software package does it all! We got a basic version of QuickBooks years ago just to balance our checking account, but upgraded to Enterprise in 2009. Since then, we have integrated our payroll, tax reporting, production management, and sales operations all into this one package. The productivity increases have been fantastic and game-changing!

Judy | Secretary, Quarries QuickBooks is so easy to navigate through – accountant is happy, we’re happy and our customers are happy because we can tell them what is on hand, what’s been paid, etc. Also our employees are happy because payroll is so easy!

    Enterprise 2016 Platinum Edition

    Enterprise is excellent!

Ronda Cross | Owner. Big C Industries, LLC I love the added report features, the job costing and added payroll benefits of having Enterprise! It is very user friendly with all the functionality of any other accounting software.

    Enterprise 2016 Platinum Edition

    I have ALWAYS loved QB’s

Danielle Trunfio | Acct. Mgr. Certainly Wood, Inc. QB’s has Always been a very well known accounting program with many of our clients and vendors. We all feel the same about it: So easy to use, very easy to correct mistakes, easy to train people in. The payroll is seamless. And now with online payments making it easier and more convenient for our customers. Not much I don’t like about QB’s.

Abe Enns | President. LoadStar LLC Thumbs up, user friendly. great product! Business Financial Reports are phenomenal.

    Enterprise 2016 Silver Edition

Highly recommended for all Small Business Owners

Irina Aptor | CFO. DNA Tactical Inc. Helps scale business models that are growing and a good starting point for accounting software before committing to a true WMS system!

    Enterprise 2016 Platinum Edition

Consolidated reports multi user mode are great

Matthew Ethington | Controller, Wasatch Guaranty Capital, LLC Our organization moved from QuickBooks Pro to Enterprise to take advantage of the reporting capabilities; specifically the ability to produce a single consolidated report from multiple entities. This makes our month-end reporting process more efficient.

    Enterprise 2016 Silver Edition

MT | Financial Manager, WP, LLC Enterprise is the best accounting software on the market. It has everything a small to midsize business needs. I highly recommend it. Get the Advanced Inventory add on so extra inventory control. The whole package is very affordable. Payroll is a simple with the payroll add on.
