Accredited Online Construction Management Degree Guide for 2015

As a construction manager, you will be involved in various administrative, business and managerial aspects of building projects. This can include selecting a crew of workers and architects, choosing building materials and making sure that your project stays within its budget and schedule. There are several different educational pathways including a certificate, a two-year associate degree, a four-year bachelor s degree and even a two-year master s degree. Although the specific curriculum for each type of program differs, common core courses cover topics like construction site safety and project management.

The construction manager is often the key leadership figure in a building project, both on the ground and in the office. They are typically responsible for project budgets, payrolls, construction methods, collaboration with engineers and architects, compliance with building codes and much more.

As a construction manager, you will have to select a team of architects, contractors and trade workers for your projects. You must also coordinate the activities of these different types of workers and ensure that progress on your projects stays on schedule. This often requires you to recognize and eliminate any factors that might slow the project time.

TABLE of CONTENTS

Check the Guide to Accreditation in Higher Education to learn more about accreditation and how to determine if the program you select meets the necessary standards.

Degrees

Coursework

Some of the most common classes that you can expect to have in an associate or bachelor s degree construction management program include:

  • Construction Project Management offers methods and techniques for preparing accurate cost estimates for building construction projects. You will learn practical strategies to help you manage and coordinate all the different types of specialists who are involved in construction projects.
  • Construction Safety deals with accident prevention, essential in the construction industry, so you will find this course on almost every construction management curriculum. You will learn how to identify common construction-site hazards, use standard building safety techniques and comply with building codes and regulatory requirements.
  • Construction Management Internships usually require you to work in the field at a building construction office. Internships usually require students to assist a professional construction manager with common tasks like scheduling, cost estimating, project planning and contract administration.

Certificate in Construction Management

These education programs are usually for students who already have some hands-on experience in construction management. In addition to certificate programs that are available through traditional construction management schools, professional associations like the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) also offer certificate programs.

  • Credit hours/length of study: 9-18 months
  • Employment prospects: entry-level construction management positions

Associate Degree in Construction Management

You will find most construction management associate degree programs at two-year community colleges and technical colleges. Although there are many schools that still offer an associate in construction management, you should be aware that an increasing number of employers now view a bachelor s degree in construction management as the entry-level degree for this profession.

  • Credit hours/length of study: two years
  • Employment prospects: entry-level construction management positions

Bachelor s Degree in Construction Management

Schools that offer a four-year bachelor s degree in construction management train students for effective leadership on a construction site.

  • Credit hours/length of study: four years
  • Coursework: construction management, construction practices, legal liabilities and requirements of building projects

Master s Degree in Construction Management

Junior construction managers who already have several years of work experience are some of the most common students who pursue construction management training at the masters level.

  • Credit hours/length of study: two years
  • Employment prospects: senior or more advanced construction management jobs

San Diego Wood Chips
Wood chips come from a variety of trees, including both hardwood and softwood varieties. In San Diego wood chips are one of the best performers in terms of moisture retention, temperature moderation, weed control, and sustainability. Termites do NOT nest in woodchips nor mulch! In perennial and shrub beds, wood chips or mulch can reduce the need for irrigation by as much as 50%. The chemical and physical diversity of these materials resists the tendency towards compaction seen in sawdust. Additionally, the materials vary in their size and decomposition rate, creating a more diverse environment that is subsequently colonized by a diverse soil biota. A biologically diverse soil biota is more resistant to environmental disturbance and will in turn support a diverse and healthy plant population. Wood chips are considered to be slow decomposers, as their tissues are rich in lignin, suberin, tannins, and other decomposition-resistant, natural compounds. Thus, wood chips supply nutrients slowly to the system; at the same time they absorb significant amounts of water that is slowly released to the soil. Finally, the reuse of plant materials as mulches keeps them out of the landfill; a benefit with both economic and environmental attributes.

How to Calculate the Amount of Mulch Needed
It is a common procedure to apply mulch over a landscape fabric to reduce weed growth. However, the chips will give a greater improvement on soil tilth where they can breakdown into the soil without the fabric layer in between. Weed growth in a mulch bed is a problem when the mulch is not at an adequate depth! As an alternative to the weed fabric, maintain a proper mulch depth to manage weeds. Weed seeds that germinate above the fabric layer will be easy to pull.

There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. One cubic yard will cover 100-square-feet with a 3 layer of mulch. Figure out the square footage of your bed, that is the width times the length for square or rectangular shaped beds. The square footage of a circular bed is the distance from the middle of the circle to the outside, multiplied by itself and then multiplied by 3.14 (which is pi).

Who We Are

Solar has a powerful impact. Generate your own clean energy, reduce your monthly electricity bills, protect yourself from rate hikes and use those savings to empower your life. It’s a substantial payoff, and you get the feel-good bonus for doing the environmentally right thing. This, combined with the efficacy of producing your own power is the foundation of San Diego Solar and Roofing.

San Diego Solar and Roofing is and has consistently been one of the top 5 solar companies in the Nation. Founded in 2008 by Joe Bono, SDS Roofing has steadily grown into one of the largest residential Solar Installers in the United States while providing the industry’s only franchise opportunity. We operate in a network of over 40 franchises across the U.S. from Hawaii to Puerto Rico. We have installed a whopping 46 megawatts of Solar and since 2012 have ranked annually on Franchise Magazine’s Franchise 500 list.

In addition to being a local solar solution, we are also a licensed and insured Owens Corning roofing contractor. We have over 20 years of roofing experience, both commercially and residentially. We are one of the only companies that can install your brand new roof, put solar on it, and still maintain your lifetime warranty for your roof. We provide only top tier roofing products and have one of the best warranties in the business.

We are your neighbors. We live and work where you do, and we care about what happens in our communities. Solar is a word-of-mouth business, so we work hard to build strong relationships in every home, block, and neighborhood we visit. Our goal is to provide an easy choice to homeowners who want better, more affordable power, and the ability to manage their home more efficiently.

From our local owners, installers, and outreach and enrollment specialists, to everyone on our corporate team in Livermore, we are dedicated to bringing the best quality service to every customer.
