Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education

Degree programs in Early Childhood and Elementary Education (ECEE) could be your start to an exciting and fulfilling career in teaching! Our initial and advanced programs are designed for prospective teachers who hope to teach children ages Birth through age 5 and/or Kindergarten through Grade 5 or practicing teachers who want to become even more effective.

Using a clinical model of preparation in four developmental phases, we engage our teacher candidates in multiple and varied field experiences with children representing the diversity of our urban and regional communities and populations. We combine these classroom-based experiences with courses focused on learning effective instructional strategies across all content areas and for all learners. We prepare and support teachers who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and professional leaders making a positive and sustained impact on children’s learning.

I am halfway through my first year of teaching and things are going really well. I credit the CEHD’s MAT program for my success. I feel like I was extremely prepared and confident when I started the year, and KTIP has been a breeze (so far). Thank you for all that you do! Faculty Strengths

The Early Childhood and Elementary Education faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized experts in their content fields. The faculty is committed to pursuing studies and issues that affect education, both locally and nationally, including the nature of pedagogy and learning, and cultural diversity. ECEE faculty members are not only great teachers who demonstrate the kinds of practices they advocate for work with Birth-Grade 5 students, they are also researchers who study topics currently important in the field of education; writers of highly valued books, chapters, and articles; presenters at international, national, and state conferences; leaders in professional organization; award winners for their teaching and research; and service providers locally and beyond.

I want to say how well the UofL MAT program prepared me for the KTIP process. I feel so comfortable being observed in the classroom and feel confident in the lessons that I prepare. I have had wonderful reviews from my mentors.

ECEE Mission

The mission of the ECEE Department is to cultivate highly effective educators of Birth through Grade 5 children in diverse educational settings. ECEE provides extensive coursework and corresponding field experiences throughout the community to prepare candidates with the knowledge and competencies of research-based best practices. Further, ECEE strives to develop educators who embrace reflective practices and promote, design and implement positive educational experiences that build on the strength and resiliency of all students and families. As part of a research-extensive university, department faculty members advance knowledge through theoretical and applied research.

Entry Requirements

Incoming students must have earned associate s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution that includes 20 credits of general education courses. Students who do not have an associate s degree or higher but have completed some college coursework or have prior work experience are encouraged to meet with an advisor in the Information Technology department to develop an education plan for entry into the program.

A cumulative GPA of 2.0 from all college coursework is required. Students must also have earned a minimum grade of 2.5 in all technical courses including those in Computer Science and Information Technology. Lastly, the following courses, equivalent experience or certifications are strongly recommended before entering this program:

Meet the Team

Sheila Capps, Program Manager

Sheila Capps has happily worked in the fields of education and technology for her entire career. The common denominator among all of her jobs is that they have been student-focused, and her overarching goal is to support and foster student success. As Program Manager, Sheila engages new students, advises and provides wrap-around support services to current students, and mentors and cheers students on to graduation. Sheila’s certifications include Certified ScrumMaster (CSM).

Alan Carter, Faculty, Program Director

Alan taught Microsoft, Novell, and custom courseware throughout the United States for 15 years before joining the faculty at Green River College and teaching information technology courses for the past 10 years. He has also installed and supported complex networks while working as staff for regional and national value added resellers. In addition, Alan published several bestselling technical books, including Windows NT 4.0 MCSE Study Guide (IDG Books Worldwide, 1998) and Windows 2000 MCSE Study System (IDG Books Worldwide, 2000). Alan’s certifications include Cisco CCNA, CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+.

Tim Mason, Faculty

Tim has taught Microsoft, Unix, Linux and programming courses for the past 15 years and now teaches full-time at Green River College. He has served as Founder and COO of mystorage.net, a predecessor to current cloud storage providers, as a Chief Information Security Officer for an international cryptographic provider, and as a Chief Cryptologist for the Department of Defense. Tim’s certifications include Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), OSSTMM Professional Security Tester Accredited Certification (OPST), CompTIA Security+, and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITILv3).

Krish Mahadevan, Faculty

Krish currently teaches server and client technologies in Windows and Linux. He has an extensive background in electrical and automotive systems engineering, having worked at Ford Motor Company, Detroit, Mich igan, and at Cummins Incorporated in Charleston, South Carolina. specializing in real-time embedded systems programming. Krish’s certifications include Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and Digital Forensic Examiner (DFE).

Simone Jarzabek, Faculty

Simone started her career at Boeing Company working as a Systems Administrator and as a Technical Project Manager. Prior to joining the faculty at Green River College, she taught Information Technology for 13 years at ITT Technical Institute and Highline College. Simone received her M.A. in Information Technology and Digital Forensics from American Public University, a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington, and a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics from University of Puget Sound .

Ed Goad, Faculty

Ed teaches in both the AA and BAS programs at Green River. He was worked in the IT industry for 20 years at a variety of organizations supporting large enterprise environments. Ed s certifications include several from Microsoft, VMware, RedHat, Cisco and Brocade.

How to Become a Social Worker: Education and Career Roadmap

Should I Become a Social Worker?

People interested in helping others work through difficult life situations may want to consider a career in social work. Social workers provide direct services or clinical counseling to help clients assess and change harmful or unhealthy situations. They work in a variety of settings including nursing homes, hospitals, private practices, schools, and community mental health clinics. Caseloads may be heavy, causing stress and long work hours for many social workers. However, social workers can rest assured knowing their services are having tangible benefits for their clients.

In addition, a Masters in Social Work (MSW) is a very versatile degree which can be used as a stepping stool for other career tracks including public health and policy. Most entry-level positions require a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). An MSW is necessary for other positions, including that of clinical social worker. All states have associated licensure or certification requirements. The following table describes some of the typical qualifications necessary for this career.

Step 1: Earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work

BSW programs prepare graduates for direct-service positions, such as mental health assistant or caseworker. Coursework includes social welfare policy, social work methods, applied research, child welfare, and social work for the aged. All BSW programs contain an internship or supervised fieldwork component, providing students the opportunity to develop practical skills in areas important to the profession, such as understanding group dynamics, interviewing, decision-making, and problem-solving.

Success Tip

  • Develop strong communication skills. Social workers must develop productive and healthy relationships with their clients and co-workers in order to work effectively. While in school, students can take advantage of internships and supervised fieldwork to learn how to interact with a variety of clients.

Step 2: Consider a Master’s Degree

An MSW can be undertaken with any undergraduate degree, though some programs may require certain prerequisite coursework in related areas, such as psychology and sociology, for applicants not holding a BSW. The MSW is required to become a clinical social worker or to work in schools or the healthcare system. These degree programs typically take two years to complete (though some programs offer more flexible 3 and 4-year degree plans) and prepare students for advanced practice in their specialties.

Students in these programs have a variety of concentrations and specialties to choose from, including mental health, families and children, global practice, older adults and families, and behavioral and physical health. Students may expand on professional components of social work, such as clinical assessment, caseload management, and leadership skills. Completion of an internship or supervised practice is required of all MSW students.

Success Tip

  • Gain experience in a high-demand specialty. According to the BLS, social workers in healthcare, mental health, substance abuse, children, families, and schools are expected to have the most favorable opportunities for employment. Working in these areas, even with a BSW, can provide the necessary experience through which to develop a specialty.

Step 3: Become Licensed

According to the BLS, all states have licensure or certification requirements for becoming a social worker. Licenses for non-clinical social workers are usually optional; rules vary for each state and can be found through the Association of Social Work Boards. State licensing requirements for clinical social workers typically involve 3,000 hours or two years of clinical experience along with completion of the MSW.

Step 4: Consider Credentialing

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) offers voluntary credentialing at three levels for MSW-educated social workers. Each credential has varying eligibility requirements that may include specific hours of continuing professional education, clinical social work experience, and professional evaluations from colleagues.

There are also voluntary specialty certifications for both bachelor’s- and master’s- educated social workers in clinical social work, healthcare social work, gerontology, and several other areas, which may improve employment prospects.

Step 5: Maintain Licensure and Credentials

Social work licensure and certification, including specialty certification, must be maintained by completing continuing education courses. Requirements for the number of hours and the types of courses that can be taken vary for each state. By maintaining these credentials, social workers will continue to create career possibilities for employment and ensure that they remain employable.

    Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education

    • Introductory Course Requirement: 3 credits
    • General Education Requirements: 52 credits*

    * In this program, 3 credits from the major may also satisfy General Education requirements.

    To earn your Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education at Ashford, you must complete 120 credits. You will need to complete 30 upper-division credits. You may be able to transfer up to 90 approved credits from community colleges, other previous college coursework, or other life experiences such as military service or job training toward your degree.

    Certification and Licensure Terms and Conditions

    An online degree from Ashford University does not lead to immediate teacher licensure in any state. If you want to become a classroom teacher, contact your state’s education authorities prior to enrolling at Ashford to determine what state-specific requirements you must complete before obtaining your teacher’s license. Ashford graduates will be subject to additional requirements on a state-by-state basis that will include one or more of the following: student teaching or practicum experience, additional coursework, additional testing, or, if the state requires a specific type of degree to seek alternative certification, earning an additional degree. None of Ashford’s online education programs are CAEP*, TEAC or NCATE accredited, which is a requirement for certification in some states. Other factors, such as a student’s criminal history, may prevent an applicant from obtaining licensure or employment in this field of study. All prospective students are advised to visit the Education Resource Organizations Directory (EROD) and to contact the licensing body of the state where they are licensed or intend to obtain licensure to verify that these courses qualify for teacher certification, endorsement, and/or salary benefits in that state prior to enrolling. Prospective students are also advised to regularly review the state’s policies and procedures relating to licensure as those policies are subject to change.

    *The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) is the resulting entity from the merger of the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

State authorization to provide a program related to the preparation of teachers or other P-12 school/system personnel does not indicate eligibility for an Alabama certificate. Applicants who complete an educator preparation program at an institution outside of Alabama must apply for an Alabama professional educator or professional leadership certificate through the Alabama Certificate Reciprocity Approach.     What you will learn

    Your Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education allows you to complete coursework in childhood development, curricula, and program development. When you complete the required coursework, you will be well acquainted with the education industry, be highly trained in various theories of childhood development, and exhibit advanced instructional skills.
