Should I Earn a Business Degree, business degrees.#Business #degrees

Should I Earn a Business Degree?

Business degrees

A business degree is a type of academic degree awarded to students who have completed a college, university, or business school program with a focus on business, business administration, or business management.

There are five basic types of business degrees that can be earned from an academic program. They include:

Not everyone who works in the business field earns a business degree. However, it is easier to enter the field and climb the career ladder if you have earned college credits or taken business classes. In some cases, a degree may be required. For example, if you would like to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), you will need at least a bachelor s degree in most states. Some jobs, particularly leadership positions, require an MBA or another type of graduate business degree. If, on the other hand, you would like to work as an administrative assistant, bank teller, or bookkeeper, an associate s degree may be all you need to secure an entry-level position.

Choosing a Business Degree Program

Choosing a business degree program can be tricky–there are tons of different business programs to choose from. Business is one of the most popular college majors.

There are also a number of schools devoted entirely to business. You can earn your business degree online or from a campus-based program. Some schools offer either option–in most cases, the only difference is the learning format–courses and the resulting degree are the same.

When choosing a business degree program, it is important to consider accreditation.

An accredited program has been reviewed and deemed quality education. Accreditation is also extremely important if you hope to transfer credits, earn an advanced degree, or increase your chances of employment after graduation.

Other Business Education Options

A formal business degree program is not the only option for aspiring business students. There are a number of seminars and other training programs that can be taken. Some are available through colleges, universities, and business schools; others are offered by various business organizations and associations.

You may also be able to receive business training on the job or through an internship or vocational program. Other education options include diploma and certificate programs, which are available through many different technical and vocational schools.

Business Certifications

After earning a business degree, completing business training, or working in the business field, you can seek a business certifications. There are many different types of business certifications available. Most of them are professional certifications that relate to a specific position or area of business. For example, an experienced project manager could earn the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute; a business manager could earn the Certified Manager designation from the Institute of Certified Management Professionals; and a small business owner can get a Small Business Certification for their business from the SBA.

Some business certifications are voluntary, others are considered mandatory under federal or state law.

What Can I Do with a Business Degree?

People who earn a marketing degree tend to work in marketing, while people who earn a human resources degree often seek work as a human resources specialist. But with a general business degree, you are not limited to one particular area of expertise. Business majors can hold many different positions in many different industries. A business degree could lead to a career in finance, marketing, public relations, management, sales, production–the list is almost endless. Your employment opportunities are limited only by your knowledge and experience. A few of the most common career paths for business degree holders include:

Types of Business Degrees

Business degrees

There are a plethora of online programs and small on-campus programs offering business degrees, and it is easy to get confused. First of all, make sure the school you are researching is accredited by an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education . Secondly, when doing your research about which business schools to attend or which programs fit your goals, it is important to understand the types of degrees being offered by the school in which you are interested. Here are some definitions:

MBA – Master’s of Business Administration

An MBA is a graduate degree in business. It is likely the most you will need to get to truly advance your career. (There is one level higher, called the Phd or Doctorate Degree, but very few practicing business people posess it.) An MBA can be completed in anywhere from 1-3 years based upon the type of program, although the standard for full-time students is 2 years. Most MBA candidates are required to have completed an undergraduate degree, although not neccessarily in a business-related field. They are also usually required to have around 3-5 years of related business work experience.

BSBA – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

An undergraduate degree, also called a baccalaureate or bachelor’s degree, is the first level of university degrees. This degree is beyond an associate’s degree, but below a master’s or doctorate degree. Depending on the course of study, one can earn a bachelor of arts (BA) or a bachelor of science (BS) degree. The Bachelor of Science is the undergraduate degree usually awarded to business majors. Majors and concentration programs vary by institution, however, the BSBA is primarily a two-year program undertaken within the construct of a four-year undergraduate education.

Types of Business Degrees: From Marketing to Business Administration

Business degreesAs our economy becomes increasingly specialized and reliant on technology, degrees in business are quickly eclipsing liberal arts as the “do anything’” degree. With their focus on building relationships, innovation, and improving the bottom line, employers tend to view business degree holders as individuals who are ready to contribute to their organization and fulfill an array of roles, especially those at the management level. Adding a business degree to your credentials might help you move into higher levels of management or switch your career trajectory altogether. Learn more about the types of business degrees available to find out which direction in your business education is the best course to take.

Business Degree Levels

Business degrees are provided at all levels of post-secondary education, from certificate programs through a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA). Due to the broad variety, admission requirements can differ greatly. Certificate programs usually last less than two years and are open for individuals at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Two-year associate’s degree and four-year bachelor’s degree programs in business typically ask applicants to have a high school diploma or GED. Some undergraduate programs may also require standardized test scores, such as the SAT or ACT.

Both Master of Business Administration (MBA) and DBA schools require a four-year degree and might ask applicants to submit GRE scores. While most graduate business programs accept applicants from numerous undergraduate majors, students are often expected to have acquired a few years of real-world business experience prior to applying. Depending on the school, some doctoral programs may also require candidates to have first earned a master’s degree. MBA degrees usually take two years to complete, whereas DBA programs can take 3-4 years, but the exact timeline will vary by program.

Business Degree Concentrations

In addition to the traditional business majors of business administration or business management, business degrees are also offered in a variety of specialized disciplines as separate majors within the business college, such as majors in finance, accounting or entrepreneurship. Additionally, many programs include concentrations within business administration programs, such as an MBA with an emphasis in human resources management, where students can take classes that will better help them in the particular field where the student would like to work. These types of programs have the benefit of providing not only a solid business foundation, but also a career-focused curriculum in a specific discipline within business. Among some of the more popular specialized business areas are:

  • Accounting
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Finance
  • Healthcare management
  • Human resources management
  • Information systems management
  • International business
  • Marketing
  • Public administration

Business Degree Course Formats

While traditional programs are still popular, larger numbers of schools are offering degrees in business administration with flexible scheduling. Business schools are reshaping their programs to accommodate working individuals in meeting their education goals. Options include part-time and accelerated programs; online business administration degree programs; hybrid programs, where some courses are online and some are on campus; and weekend and evening programs, which meet at times that are convenient for the busy adult.

Marketing Your New Skills

After completing your degree in business administration, the possible career paths range across multiple industries, including finance, healthcare, marketing, and IT. Salaries generally depend on education level and the demand of the field, with roles at the managerial level typically commanding the highest income. As such, supervisory positions tend to be competitive and usually require extensive work experience in addition to strong academic credentials. In 2011, the median annual salary for the following careers were as follows:

With the many types of business degrees offered by universities today, there are a number of options available to assist you in taking the next step in your career, regardless of your desired industry. Whether you are hoping to enroll in a full-time, on campus program to help kick start your education or are hoping to earn a part-time, online business management degree to move into a supervisory role, there is a business program that will fit into your lifestyle. Open yourself up to an assortment of opportunities by beginning your business education now.

FIND A PROGRAM TO LAUNCH YOUR DREAM CAREER. WHICH AREA ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?

Looking for the perfect music career?

music business Degrees

Not everyone who works in the music industry is a musician or a vocalist. In fact, without the many people who handle the business side of the industry, many performers would never succeed in their chosen career. People who attend music business school manage the financial, legal and logistical aspects of the industry, which makes it possible for artists to concentrate on the creative aspects of their career. The demanding music business is highly competitive, and requires as much time, effort and dedication as crafting a career as a performer.

The curriculum of a music business degree blends musical knowledge with business acumen. Students may learn just as much about accounting and entrepreneurship as they do about music theory and harmony. It is precisely this type of unique blend of subject matter that makes it possible for students to succeed in the modern music industry. The highly competitive nature of this field makes earning an appropriate degree absolutely indispensable. Some colleges are offering music business degree programs on campus, but with increasing demand for flexibility, an increasing number of these schools are providing students with the chance to earn a music business degree online.

Before choosing a music business school, it’s important to ensure that it has received the appropriate accreditation. Institutions that have received the National Association of Schools of Music accreditation are a good choice. Additionally, prospective students should look for schools that have earned the approval of an educational organization that has received official recognition from the federal Department of Education. Accreditation by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, or ACICS, or another regional accrediting body demonstrates that a college offers an academically rigorous program with well-qualified faculty members.

Associate’s Degree in Music Business

This two year degree option provides students with an opportunity to explore how business and creativity intersect. This music business degree is suitable for students who are performers and for those who have no musical experience. Most programs also require the completion of general education credits. Usually, several electives related to the major are selected by the student, with these electives supporting the student’s chosen specialization. Common concentration areas include production of music, music marketing and disc jockey techniques, among others.

Prerequisites for entering an associate’s degree program typically include earning a high school diploma or GED. Many institutions require students to fill out a basic application form before being accepted. Once in the program, students can expect to enroll in courses like:

  • Accounting Principles
  • Introduction to Music Theory
  • Introduction to Business
  • Music Industry Entrepreneurship
  • Recording and Mass Media in the Music Business
  • Studio Music Recording
  • Computers and Technology in the Music Industry
  • Music Production
  • Introduction to Marketing

Accordingly, students will get to select many electives that support their area of specialization while also gaining a broad based general education that will serve them well in their career.

Basic prerequisites for entering a music business degree program include a high school diploma, SAT scores and an application form. Depending upon the school, other materials, like an essay, may be required for admission. After enrollment, the student will find that a wide variety of classes are available to them. Among them are:

  • Introduction to Music Business

  • Business Manager for Artists
  • Record Label Executive
  • Entertainment Attorney
  • Recording Engineer
  • Music Editor
  • Publisher
  • Promoter
  • Public Relations Executive
  • Recording Artist

Masters in Music Business

Students wanting to acquire advanced business knowledge that is firmly rooted in an artistic atmosphere may choose to pursue a Masters in Music Business. The curriculum at most universities uncovers the structure of the modern music industry so that students may understand it completely and be better prepared to deal with its ever changing environment. Whether students decide to study on campus or online, they may have to complete an internship and an in-depth research project in order to graduate.

Prerequisites to enter one of these competitive programs typically include an undergraduate degree and a satisfactory score on the GRE. Letters of recommendation, work experience and essays or interviews may also be required. Approximately two years of full time study are usually needed to complete all degree requirements.

In most programs, students complete music business courses like:

  • Principles of the Music Business

  • The Music Industry and the Law
  • Concert Management
  • Artist Management

They may also take business courses such as:

  • Management and Leadership
  • Financial Accounting

Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education

Degree programs in Early Childhood and Elementary Education (ECEE) could be your start to an exciting and fulfilling career in teaching! Our initial and advanced programs are designed for prospective teachers who hope to teach children ages Birth through age 5 and/or Kindergarten through Grade 5 or practicing teachers who want to become even more effective.

Using a clinical model of preparation in four developmental phases, we engage our teacher candidates in multiple and varied field experiences with children representing the diversity of our urban and regional communities and populations. We combine these classroom-based experiences with courses focused on learning effective instructional strategies across all content areas and for all learners. We prepare and support teachers who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and professional leaders making a positive and sustained impact on children’s learning.

I am halfway through my first year of teaching and things are going really well. I credit the CEHD’s MAT program for my success. I feel like I was extremely prepared and confident when I started the year, and KTIP has been a breeze (so far). Thank you for all that you do! I am lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from such fabulous professors.

Anna Conley, 2011 Early Elementary MAT graduate, Layne Elementary School

Our Programs and Degrees

ECEE offers a wide variety of programs and degrees for those interested in becoming a teacher (initial certification) and for certified teachers wanting to further their education (advanced degrees). Click the button below to learn more.

Faculty Strengths

The Early Childhood and Elementary Education faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized experts in their content fields. The faculty is committed to pursuing studies and issues that affect education, both locally and nationally, including the nature of pedagogy and learning, and cultural diversity. ECEE faculty members are not only great teachers who demonstrate the kinds of practices they advocate for work with Birth-Grade 5 students, they are also researchers who study topics currently important in the field of education; writers of highly valued books, chapters, and articles; presenters at international, national, and state conferences; leaders in professional organization; award winners for their teaching and research; and service providers locally and beyond.

I want to say how well the UofL MAT program prepared me for the KTIP process. I feel so comfortable being observed in the classroom and feel confident in the lessons that I prepare. I have had wonderful reviews from my mentors.

ECEE Mission

The mission of the ECEE Department is to cultivate highly effective educators of Birth through Grade 5 children in diverse educational settings. ECEE provides extensive coursework and corresponding field experiences throughout the community to prepare candidates with the knowledge and competencies of research-based best practices. Further, ECEE strives to develop educators who embrace reflective practices and promote, design and implement positive educational experiences that build on the strength and resiliency of all students and families. As part of a research-extensive university, department faculty members advance knowledge through theoretical and applied research.

I appreciate the skills you worked so hard to give us to use in our classrooms as well as the emphasis on inquiry based (and social) learning. I’ve been in education for 8 years now and know I absolutely made the right career choice.
