Average Cost of Life Insurance (2017)

Contents

ValuePenguin recently took an in-depth look at the average cost of life insurance across a number of different policy durations. The largest influencing factor on life insurance prices are the health of the individual being insured. Factors such as whether or not your smoke, and what your height/weight are go a long way towards determining your annual insurance premiums. Individuals that smoke can pay 3-4x the amount that healthier, non-smokers will have to pay in premiums. Of course, life insurers will look at many other factors besides health (such as your occupation and age) but factors common in pricing other insurance products, like state of residence, won’t be a contributing factor.

Average Cost of Term Life Insurance by Age

Looking at a 20 year term policy (the most popular option) worth $250,000, we’ve determined what the average annual price is for individuals between 25 and 65. One of the clear takeaways from the table: it’s expensive to smoke! Smokers on average will pay up to 200% more for their life insurance policies than non-smokers. This disparity grows with age with 25 year old smokers paying twice as much for their insurance while 65 year old smokers pay almost 3x as much.

Monthly Life Insurance Cost (Non-Smoker)

Annual Life InsuranceCost (Non-Smoker)

Average Cost of Life Insurance By Term

Below you’ll find the average cost of life insurance broken out by number of years on the policy. Unsurprisingly so, the longer the policy term the more expensive it is. Average policy costs range from $568 per year for a 10 year term policy to $1,528 for a 30 year term policy.

Term Life Insurance Policy Costs

Term life insurance rates are typically the cheapest way for an individual to purchase life insurance coverage. They’re significantly cheaper than insuring with a whole life policy and still provide some flexibility. Our charts below detail 10, 20, and 30 year term life policies so you can see the average cost of each. As you’ll see, fewer policy coverage years equate to a cheaper monthly (or annual) premium.

Life Insurance Rates: 10 Year Term

Here we breakdown 10 year term life insurance policies and show you the average annual premiums depending on your level of health and the amount of coverage you’re interested in purchasing. Ten year policies are popular for those people who are on a very tight budget as they offer some of the cheapest rates on the market, or those who won’t require insurance after their ten years of coverage expires. If you need a reminder on what each ‘Rate Class’ entails you can click here and see our description at the bottom of the page.

Life Insurance Rates: 20 Year Term

The most popular term life insurance option on the market, the 20 year term policy provides longer coverage than its shorter-term 10 year counterpart. These policies are usually recommended for young families who often have large debts and expenses, like mortgages and school loans, that would become extremely burdensome if the breadwinner of the family happened to die unexpectedly. Twenty years is typically long enough for the family to substantially pay down these debts and reduce the potential risk of someone else having to foot the bill should something happen. Take a look at the average rates by Rate Class below:

Life Insurance Rates: 30 Year Term

Looking for a longer term life insurance policy? Thirty year term policies will provide you more flexibility but come at a much higher price. However, one of the advantages to a longer policy, such as a 30 year term, is that your premiums remain unchanged even if your health changes over the time period. So if you’re underwritten as a healthy 25 year old and find yourself overweight and out of shape at 50, fear not! Your rates will have been locked in based on your physical health when you purchased the policy. You can see below how much pricier 30 year policies are than your shorter term policy options:

Life Insurance Market Size

The life insurance market has grown by around 30% over the last ten years. Interestingly, the market grew about 28% between 2003 and 2008 before shrinking after the recession in ’08-’09. Since then it’s grown steadily and just surpassed it’s 2008 market size in 2012. Check out our graph below to see how the market has fluctuated in the last decade. All numbers in billions.

*Data from the 2012 NAIC Study

Methodology

Data from this study was sourced from TIAA-CREF. Average life insurance figures were calculated by looking at four policy amounts ($100k, $250k, $500k, and $1 million) across four Rate Classes. The results were averaged to give us the number in the first table. Here’s the breakdown concerning rate classes:

Preferred Plus policies assume no tobacco use in 5 years, no serious medical issues, cholesterol levels below 210, and blood pressure that doesn’t exceed 135/85.

Preferred policies assume no tobacco use in 3 years, above average health, no serious medical issues, cholesterol levels below 250, and blood pressure that doesn’t exceed 135/85.

Select policies assume no tobacco use in 12 months, good health, blood pressure below 140/90, cholesterol below 300.

Standard policies assume tobacco use in the past year, good health, cholesterol below 300, and blood pressure readings below 140/90.

Cost to Hire a Locksmith

Most homeowners spend between $116 to $165 nationally.

Get free estimates from local contractors who can Hire a Locksmith .

Whether you’ve just bought a new home and you want to have the locks changed for safety reasons, or you’re in need of an emergency lock repair, you’ll need the services of a professional locksmith. An experienced locksmith can replace all types of locks, help you get into your home or car if you’ve locked yourself out, create new keys for a lock, or re-key locks to fit a new key. Before hiring a locksmith or trying to handle a lock problem yourself, you’ll want to know how much the project will cost.

How do we get this data? This info is based on 6519 cost profiles, as reported by ImproveNet members.

Average Cost to Hire a Locksmith

The average cost to hire a locksmith is $181. The majority of people who needed the services of a professional locksmith reported paying between $143 and $199. The lowest reported cost to hire a locksmith was $59, while the highest price for locksmith services was $300. The cost to hire a locksmith will depend on several factors, including whether you’re in need of emergency service or if there are difficult circumstances like hazardous weather in the area.

Cost Considerations When Hiring a Locksmith

Most experienced locksmiths can unlock any door without needing to replace the locks. If a locksmith tells you that the locking mechanism needs to be replaced, you may want to get a second opinion if possible. Replacing locks and strike plates will add to the project cost. Some locksmiths may charge an additional fee for middle of the night or emergency service. If you’re out on the road and have locked yourself out of your car, you may have to pay an additional mileage fee. Some insurance companies and roadside assistance plans offer free or low cost locksmith services if you choose from a list of participating providers. Before hiring a locksmith on your own, you might first make a call to your insurer to check on your benefits.

DIY Locksmith Projects

If you’re thinking of replacing a lock yourself, consider the cost of tools and the hardware as well as your time. An inexperienced do-it-yourselfer may inadvertently cause damage to the door or door frame, resulting in additional expenses for the project. Hiring a professional to fix a DIY project gone wrong increases the cost.

California Long-Term Disability Insurance

Disability insurance can be a safety net for employees in California. When employees have non-work-related accidents that prevent them from working or earning a living, their earned income is protected. Disability insurance benefits include paid sick leave, short-term disability benefits, and long-term disability benefits.

Given the high number of Americans living with disabilities, getting disability insurance is a smart move for people who support themselves and their families through their jobs. Long-term disability (LTD) insurance in particular is extremely beneficial for employees who might experience a serious illness or injury. While California does have a short-term disability program that pays up to 55% of your wages for up to a year, California does not have a long-term disability program. Social Security disability and SSI disability, which are notoriously hard to qualify for, are the only other options for long-term disability benefits in California.

Long-term disabilities can continue anywhere from five years to the remainder of an individual s life. However, only 30% of American workers in private industry currently have access to employer-sponsored long-term disability insurance coverage through their employers.

Typical group long-term disability (LTD) benefits start when sick leave and short-term disability benefits are exhausted, and it replaces about 60% of one’s pay. In contrast, Social Security disability benefits are based on lifetime earnings, and the average monthly payment in 2013 is $1,100 per month (up to a maximum of $2,500 per month). SSI pays even less; the federal monthly payment for 2017 is $735 per month if you have no other income, plus California pays a small state supplementary payment to most SSI recipients.

Here are some important facts to understand if you are looking to insure and protect yourself against disability.

  • How to get LTD. Long-term disability insurance can be obtained either by a group or individually. Group coverage can be offered through an employer, professional group, or association.
  • Eligibility. For employees whose companies offer long-term disability coverage, the individual must work for a specified period of time known as a service wait. For professional or association-affiliated LTD coverage, the individual must be a member of the group for a set period of time.
  • Price of LTD. For individual LTD coverage, you will be responsible for the entire cost of insurance. In group LTD coverage, your employer may pay the full cost but you may have to pay percentage of the cost or a set premium.
  • Coverage. Long-term disability coverage can last from one year to the age of retirement usually 65. However, some plans differ; consult the summary plan description to verify the number of years covered by the insurance policy.
  • Medical costs. The LTD policy covers only wage replacement, not health coverage.
  • Pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is any medical condition for which medical care was received three to six months prior to the coverage effective date. LTD plans may have a pre-existing conditions exclusionary period. During this period of time, an individual’s prior medical condition(s) will not be covered by the policy.
  • Partial benefits. Employees whose hours are reduced because of a disability may be eligible to receive partial benefits.
  • Other benefits. Getting LTD benefits does not preclude an employee from applying for other benefits program such as California’s State Disability Insurance (SDI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). However, your LTD benefits are usually reduced by the monthly amount you receive in SDI or SSDI. Workers’ comp benefits are also “offset.”

Get the compensation you deserve.

Tranquility ATN (All-Through-the-Night) Briefs (Tape – on)

By. corn

Grand Rapids, MI
Mar. 11, 2017

It has made a BIG difference!

My 95 year old father is in a nursing home. They provide disposable briefs, but he was constantly leaking through. The laundry could not keep up with the situation. One weekend he was totally out of pants. This is when I called my sister-in-law who had done a lot of research on the different products available. She uses the ATN Disposable Briefs. I researched the product and decided to give it a try. The leakage has cut down dramatically and no more laundry problems.

Pros: The aides in the nursing home have said the inside liner is wonderful. They have been very impressed with the product. It makes their job easier.

Overall: Yes, I would recommend this product.

So glad I found this product!

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the product fit & performed. I have been searching for years to replace a product I was using that had gone to “fabric like”. I am very active & the thicker & fabric type wind up aggravating my herniated disc & rub my legs raw.

Pros: Thin yet absorbent. Soft plastic backing dose not rub you raw. Hourglass shape makes them fit comfortably yet snug so no fears of leaking. Comfortable enough to wear all day not just for the night.

Cons: Only thing I would change is the size. But I have found this to be a problem with just about every brand. I am a 38 so I should fall right in the middle of the size chart for medium & large is way to big. If they were a little larger & had a refasten-able landing zone for the tapes they would be perfect!

Overall: Yes, I would recommend this product.

Tranq ATN very weird/bad

Unique diapers, have ordered Tranq brand before, but these. i may try a size up (though its not correct by the size) but i will never order these again

Pros: decent absorption for the rating, slim design so its easy to conceal under clothing, quick absorption for when i flood the diaper

Cons: it crinkles a lot even under clothing, the diaper tends to ‘sweat’ when flooded (i am a male, changing from a sitting position to a standing one for example causes the flooding situations), tendency to leak if flooded or not put on right. this brings me to the main point: The diapers sizing says i should be wearing mediums, i ordered them in medium, but they did not fit well at all. Felt odd when wearing, didn’t feel comfortable during daily activities, had a high tendency to leak due to the awkward fit, and even though it has a good absorption rating (even from me) once it gets to about half the rated absorption urine will squish and shift. and in my case usually leading to major leaks when there is pressure applied to the diaper (not to be overly descriptive or gross) almost like you are sitting in nothing but plastic pants filled with water. I do not say this to be crude or gross but to make sure all are aware of my EXACT experience

Overall: No, I would not recommend this product.

work very well

This product works very well. No leaks if you put on correctly. My Dad sleeps more comfortable and makes my clean up easier.

Pros: Hold lots of liquid and is secure. Super fast delivery

Cons: Not really any cons except a little expensive but worth the cost. Installation note: the tabs have two parts, can be re intalled if you dont try to remove the blue tab – just the top white tab shoulf be peeled back

Overall: Yes, I would recommend this product.

Didn’t work well for my mother

My mother said it didn’t fit her well and wasn’t able to contain all her fluids. Bed was wet in the morning.

Cons: Didn’t fit her well and didn’t hold the fluids.

Overall: No, I would not recommend this product.

FINALLY

After trying many combinations and singles for overnight care I finally gave into taking the gamble with online ordering. Doubtful at first and pleasantly surprised second. One diaper through the night with the bed and clothing dry. That is a work saver alone. I am using the Large which appear HUGE but work well for fastening. Not having a problem with the tapes. Mom is only 130lbs, med. build. I use a different style diaper through the day, so when I add up the cost of 2 kinds of diapers verses the 4 I was juggling it is cheaper. Happy Mom and Happy Me

Pros: They work very well.

Cons: Sizing is off. It’s great they offer a sample of sizes.

Overall: Yes, I would recommend this product.

I thought it would be a good idea to try the tabs for fit and less mess at removal. My father said he felt like a little kid when I would take them off and prefers the Tranquility Premium Overnight Diaper instead.

Better than Huggies or Pull-ups

This is the best fitting diaper that i have found. super absorbent. Fits better than most pull-ups. Not so obvious under loose clothing. full nights sleep without the worry of leakage when properly fastened. the only downside has been with the refastenable tapes. They(the blue tape) don’t always stick on the first application, however they work well the second time around. have bought both the medium and large sizes, and have found that it’s better to go with the larger size to get a better fit.

California Car Insurance

To the extent financial responsibility laws require, it is the law to have car insurance in California, but that doesn’t mean it has to be expensive. Titan Insurance provides affordable auto insurance to California drivers, even high-risk drivers, because we know that drivers are more than their driving record. We have a variety of flexible California auto insurance options and policy discounts available, all of which are designed to protect drivers from the unexpected and save them money.

About California auto insurance

Car insurance is required in California, but not all drivers need to carry all types of insurance coverage. California only requires drivers to carry auto liability insurance. This is important for drivers who want to keep their car insurance in California affordable.

Although liability insurance is generally the only California car insurance requirement, there are plenty of additional coverage options that make sense to consider. Additional coverage provides additional protection, which can protect a driver financially in the event of an accident. Popular coverages include:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive

Protection from uninsured drivers

Finding a low cost car insurance policy in California used to be so difficult that the state implemented the Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCA). This program provides cheap car insurance to California drivers who meet certain income requirements. This is good news for all drivers. Drivers who couldn’t afford car insurance in California now have another low-cost car insurance option while drivers who do carry insurance are better protected from uninsured motorists.

Nonetheless, uninsured/underinsured motorist risk exists, and Titan offers coverage to provide protection when an at-fault party has no or insufficient liability coverage.
