Stories From The Field

Our time in the field gives us a personal view on what it’s like to get clean water for the first time. The mothers, children and communities that we’ve met inspire our ideas and, often times, solutions. Every one of them has a story worth sharing.

Donate My Car to Charity

Donating a vehicle to charity not only gets rid of an old vehicle for you, but also gives you a way to help people.

No matter which state you live in, Goodwill Car Donation is happy to accept the gift of your unwanted vehicle.

How to Donate a Vehicle

We make it very easy to donate a vehicle to charity. This is how the process works:

  1. Choose to donate any type of vehicle. We take cars and trucks, in addition to a variety of recreational vehicles. Feel free to give us your RV, motorcycle, boat, plane or jet skis. If the vehicle no longer works, that’s perfectly OK, too.
  2. Get in touch. Just give us a call at (866) 233-8586 or contact us through our website vehicle donation form. When you get in touch, let us know when will be the best time for us to come tow the car away.

That’s everything that’s needed on your end. Our team will show up on the date and time you specified to retrieve the vehicle. We then auction it, using the proceeds toward the many Goodwill programs and services in your state. You’ll also receive a top tax receipt for your deduction.

Which Charity Should You Choose?

Maybe you’re thinking, “I want to donate my car to charity,” but you’re not sure which charity to work with.

First, when you decide to make car donations to charity, you need to make sure you’re giving to a legitimate charity that is registered as tax exempt with the IRS.

Below are some commonly thought of nonprofits that take car donations:

Goodwill Car Donation: Goodwill organizations direct the proceeds of vehicle donations towards many programs and services for job seekers, youth, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and other specialized needs. A common saying you’ll hear from Goodwill organizations is “A hand up, not a hand out”. One fantastic benefit of choosing Goodwill is that all vehicle donation proceeds are distributed to the local community where the donation took place.

Kars4kids.org: Directs the proceeds of vehicle donations towards programs and services for Jewish children and their families.

National Kidney Foundation: Directs the proceeds of vehicle donations towards programs and services that have to do with the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease.

The Salvation Army: Directs the proceeds of vehicle donations towards rehabilitation programs. This charity is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church.

American Cancer Society: Directs the proceeds of vehicle donations towards cancer research and advocacy.

There are many more options you can choose to donate a vehicle to, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, Make-A-Wish Foundation, United Way of America and Alzheimer’s Association.

Why Choose Goodwill Car Donation?

When you donate a vehicle to Goodwill Car Donation, you ll be supporting programs that help disadvantaged people gain employment.

We are flexible with the vehicles we accept. and we go out of our way to make the donation process stress-free for you.

    Donate Furniture to Charity

By Donna Cosmato Sales Management Professional

If you’re looking to donate furniture to charity then you’re in luck. Plenty of charities are willing to accept used furniture as donations and will either use the furniture, give it away to the needy, or resell it and put the profits toward their causes.

    Charities Accepting Furniture as Donations

    Furniture Banks

Furniture Banks in the US and Canada are independently operating partners of the Furniture Bank Association North America, and each of these independent groups accept donations of usable furniture and distributes it to those in need. While FBA does maintain a map of US donation sites on their website, they do not accept furniture donations directly. As independent operations, each Furniture Bank establishes its own set of guidelines for acceptable donations so donors need to contact their local area Furniture Bank to see if their furniture items can be accepted.

    Goodwill Donation Centers

Goodwill Donation Centers accept new or gently used items like furniture. The donated furniture is sold at Goodwill store locations, and the profits from those sales are put back into the community through employment services, job training, and other career services. Goodwill guarantees at least 82 percent of all revenues are used to fund employment and training programs, which means you can be assured that your gently-used furniture is going towards a good purpose.

    My Brother’s Keeper

My Brother’s Keeper is a Christian organization located in Easton, Massachusetts. Volunteers pick-up donations of high-quality furniture (including mattresses), and redistribute them to needy members of the community. At this time, they are not accepting any drop-offs, so items must be scheduled for pickup service. They will remove furniture from residences and businesses. They request that all donations be in very good, serviceable condition. The mission of this organization is “to lift people up, help them feel special, and let them know they are loved.” They are ready to serve as the “middleman” to make sure your used furniture gets put to its greatest use. Check the map on their website for detailed information about their 35-town service area.

    Salvation Army

The Salvation Army operates stores that accept donations of household goods. such as furniture. They provide a free pick-up of high quality furniture by calling 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825). Alternatively, you can drop off your furniture at a local drop off center or schedule your pickup online. Purchases made at the stores help fund The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers.

    St. Vincent de Paul

St. Vincent de Paul has thrift stores across the United States. These shops depend on donations of gently used items such as furniture, and donated items must be in useable condition. Donations can be made directly to the thrift stores. Furniture can also be picked up at no cost to the donor. To schedule a pickup, call 1-800-675-2882 (weekdays between 8:30 and 3:30 pm), or use their online scheduling service. which is arranged through Donation Town.

    Vietnam Veterans of America

Vietnam Veterans of America accepts donations of household goods such as pieces of small usable furniture in 30 of the 50 American states through their service organization, ClothingDonation.org. To schedule a free pickup, call 1-888-518-VETS (8387). To find out if your state is in their service area, use their interactive map tool. They request that donors place the clearly marked donations outside of their residence, and make sure that the items can be seen by the truck drivers.

    Other Donation Venues for Furniture

By looking through the yellow pages, you may be able to identify charities in your area that could use your unwanted furniture. In addition, your local church or religious organization may know of a needy family that would be glad to receive these essential household items. Some other organizations to consider donating your furniture to are:

    • Help those who are without homes by donating your furniture to local homeless shelters or women’s shelters.
    • Senior citizen centers, as well as elderly residents on fixed-incomes, may be in need of furniture.
    • Schools and community theaters accept furniture donations to use as props for their performances.
    • Neighborhood thrift stores may accept this type of donation if the items are in good condition.

In all cases, be sure to call first to make sure there is a need for your unwanted pieces. Chances are, if you have serviceable furniture to give away, you will find an organization willing to take it.

    Only Donate Serviceable Items

This isn’t an easy way to dispose of furniture that should be hauled off to a dump. Only serviceable furniture, that can be used directly or sold to make a profit, should wind up as a charitable donation.

Before contacting a charity to request they pick up a piece of furniture, ask yourself the question, “Would anyone actually want to buy this?” It’s one thing if the cushions have a few stains or if there is a small knick on a piece of wood. It’s another thing entirely if the furniture is in such disrepair that it is unlikely to be of any use to anyone.

Some charities with drop-off areas consider it dumping if someone drops off a piece of furniture that isn’t usable. Since many of these drop-off points have surveillance cameras that record license plate numbers, these individuals could receive a hefty fine for dumping their unserviceable furniture at these sites.

    Furnishing It Forward

The next time you plan to update the look of your home, take a long look at the list of charities that accept furniture donations. Choose the organization that best meets your passion whether it’s kids, pets, conservation or the homeless. Donating your unwanted furniture helps you pay a kind deed forward socially, fiscally and environmentally.

Donations to Charities are Tax Deductible #charity #donation #tax #deduction

    #

The Tax Deduction for Charitable Donations

    Updated February 08, 2017

Even the Internal Revenue Service thinks it s better to give than to receive — at least the IRS gives you a tax break for giving. Donations to qualified charities are considered tax deductible expenses so they can reduce your taxable income, lowering your tax bill.

Not everyone can deduct their charitable contributions, however. You must itemize your tax deductions to claim any charitable donation, and this is typically only in your best interest if the total of all your itemized deductions exceeds the amount of the standard deduction you would receive for your filing status.

How to Claim a Deduction for Charitable Donations

You claim a tax deduction for charitable giving on Schedule A of Form 1040. The schedule isn t just for claiming charitable donations. It includes and calculates all itemized deductions you re eligible to claim so you can transfer the total to your tax return in lieu of the standard deduction. Other possible itemized deductions include things like medical and dental expenses you paid for yourself or your dependents over the course of the year — including insurance premiums — as well as other taxes you may have paid and home mortgage interest.

Rules for Claiming the Charitable Contribution Deduction

The IRS imposes several rules for claiming a deduction for charitable contributions:

    • You must actually donate cash or property. A pledge or promise to donate is not deductible until you actually pay.
    • You must contribute to a qualified tax-exempt organization . Charities will let you know if they have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, but some organizations, including churches and other religious organizations, are not required to obtain 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. They count as qualified charities regardless, as do trusts and non-profit volunteer fire companies.
    • You must meet several recordkeeping requirements. This includes saving canceled checks, acknowledgment letters from the charity and appraisals determining the value of donated property.

    Keeping Records of Your Donation

Your written records must indicate the name of the charitable organization, the date of your contribution and the amount you gave.

Canceled checks work well because the name of the charity, the date and the amount of the gift are all appear there. Bank statements are good, too, when they show a gift paid by debit card, and credit card statements work when they show this same information.

Charitable organizations will often provide donors with written letters of acknowledgment or receipts. The IRS can disallow charitable donations of $250 or more if you don t have a written acknowledgement from the charity to document your gift. If you make more than one contribution over this amount, you ll need a separate acknowledgment for each one or the single acknowledgment must list each donation in detail with the date you made them.

    Non-Cash Contributions

You have to be able to substantiate the fair market value of goods or property you donate, including vehicles, boats or even planes, and you ll need a written acknowledgment from the charity for this type of gift as well. You must fill out Form 8283 and include this with your tax return if the property is worth more than $500.

    Tips for Donating Non-Cash Items

    • Make a list of the items you re giving away. You ll need these details for Form 8283.
    • Note the condition of each item and arrive at a value. The IRS will allow a deduction for any item that s in good working condition or better. In other words, don t bother to claim a deduction for that old TV in your basement that hasn t worked in years, even if it just needs a single new part. At the very least, you must have it valued in its current condition without the new part. You can use valuation guidelines provided online by the Salvation Army or Goodwill for common items such as clothing, small appliances and other household goods, Save the price tag and/or store receipt to prove the item s value if it s brand new.
    • You can claim a deduction for food and groceries, too. You can deduct the cost if you donate groceries to a charity as well. Just be sure to get a written acknowledgement of your donation and keep your grocery store receipt to prove the prices of the items.
    • Consider taking pictures of your donations. Having a picture handy of what you donated can be useful, especially if you re donating a lot of items. This isn t technically a requirement, but it can t hurt in the unlikely event that your return is audited. Just snap away on your phone, then send the pictures to your hard drive and save them.
    • Prepare your own receipt to prove the donation. If you write it yourself ahead of time, you can simply have it signed when you drop off your items. This way you can rest assured that the receipt is correct and it includes all the information you need.
    • Obtain a written appraisal if you re donating property worth more than $5,000.

Limits on the Charitable Contribution Deduction

Generally, you can deduct contributions up to 30 or 50 percent of your adjusted gross income depending on the nature and tax-exempt status of the charity you re giving to. You can deduct contributions of appreciated capital gains assets up to 20 percent of your AGI.

Don t worry if your gifts exceed these thresholds. You can carry the excess over to subsequent tax year. Excess contributions can be carried over for a maximum of five years.

Your deduction may be affected if your AGI is too high. however: $311,300 if you re married and filing jointly, $285,350 if you re eligible to file as head of household, $259,400 if you re single, and $155,650 if you re married but elect to file a separate tax return. If you earn more than this, the total of your itemized deductions is limited to 80 percent of your AGI or 3 percent of the amount by which your income exceeds the limit, whichever is less.

    What s Not Deductible

Some contributions aren t tax deductible, including gifts made to:

    • Political parties, political campaigns or political action committees
    • Gifts donated to individual people
    • Contributions to labor unions, chambers of commerce or business associations
    • Contributions to for-profit schools and hospitals
    • Contributions to foreign governments

That still allows for a lot of charitable giving to whittle away at your tax liability if you want to itemize.
