1. Is there a fee for the Green Business Program?

There is not currently an fee for most jurisdictions, but there may be soon, so apply quickly. Many jurisdictions will likely start charging a nominal fee to cover the costs of running the program. A few jurisdictions have already started doing this. Costs may be incurred, however, if fixtures do not meet our minimum requirements.

2. How long does it take for a business to obtain Green Business certification?

It depends on several factors: how many practices on the Green Business are already in place, how complicated the facility is (i.e. is there a kitchen, parking lot, or pool?), and how committed the business is to making the required changes quickly. It generally takes a quick business about a month to 6 weeks. An average time frame is about 3 months. Some businesses can take up to a year if they move slowly or have complicated changes to make.

3. What do I need to do to be a Green Business?

To be certified as a Green Business you must demonstrate that you take action to conserve resources and prevent pollution in both your facility (fixtures and maintenance) and your operations (purchasing and other practices). Credit worthy actions items consist of certain requirements for all businesses, a minimum number of optional items chosen from the and other items you write in (which are subject to approval). These items are then verified through several onsite assessments. For any required items not verified, needed follow up action must be completed in order to be passed. Once all assessments are passed, you will be Certified!

4. What is the process to become a Green Business?

The exact process varies between jurisdictions, but all consist of filling out the registration form. completing an application, and having onsite assessments. Some jurisdictions require an initial site visit or a phone consultation before the assessments; some go straight to the assessments when the is complete. Different jurisdictions also accept s at different levels of completion. Please contact your local coordinator or review the instructions in the automatic email you receive after submitting your registration form .

5. What can I do to expedite my application?

Businesses that have submitted an online can expedite the process by using in information guides next to the application measures to implement the minimum requirements in the application. Being able to provide supporting documentation for each practice also helps speed the process.

6. Does my business have to be entirely green before I apply?

No, any business operating in an eligible sector with a commitment to greening operations and a willingness to make required changes can apply. Our program staff will assist each business in implementing the required practices and help them obtain Green Business certification.

Our partnership of government agencies and utilities helps local businesses comply with all environmental regulations and take actions to conserve resources, prevent pollution, and minimize waste. We offer motivated businesses and agencies an easy-to-use framework for improving environmental performance. Since 1997 thousands of businesses and public agencies have been certified.

Monterey Bay Area Region

The Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program is a successful partnership of environmental agencies, utilities and nonprofit organizations that assist, recognize and promote businesses and government agencies that volunteer to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. To be certified “green,” participants must be in compliance with all regulations and meet program standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste. We offer motivated businesses and agencies an easy-to-use framework for improving environmental performance.

San Francisco County

The San Francisco Green Business Program is a member of the Bay Area Green Business Program. As a member, San Francisco participates in the development of regional policies and greening standards. Santa Barbara Region

Green Business Santa Barbara County is a multi-jurisdictional effort to encourage businesses within Santa Barbara County to implement actions to protect, preserve, and improve the environment above and beyond what is required by law. The program is voluntary and offers assistance and incentives, including an official Green Business certification upon completion of the recommended actions.

Manhattan Beach Region

The Manhattan Beach Green Business Certification Program is a voluntary program that encourages businesses to operate in a more environmentally responsible way that is good for their bottom line and the environment. The Manhattan Beach Green Business Certification Program is a collaboration between the City of Manhattan Beach, Waste Management, and the South Bay Energy Services Center to certify and recognize green businesses in Manhattan Beach.

Santa Monica

The Santa Monica Green Business Certification Program is a voluntary program that encourages businesses to implement proactive actions that are good for their bottom line and the environment. The Santa Monica Green Business Certification Program is a collaboration between the City of Santa Monica, Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sustainable Works to certify and recognize green businesses in the Santa Monica Community.

City of Ventura

The City of Ventura launched their Green Business Program as part of the California Green Business Network in 2012. The program is voluntary and attracts businesses with environmental best practices in place, as well as providing assistance, recognition, and promotion to those that have gone through the certification process.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company supports and funds the energy conservation aspects of the California Green Business Program and the local City and County agencies that administer the them in their territory. This program is funded by California utility customers and administered by PG

Washington State Teacher Certification Requirements

Teaching certification is a required credential for teachers and other education professionals. Get some quick facts about the education, training and testing requirements necessary to qualify for jobs across the state of Washington.

Washington state teacher certification involves completing a bachelor’s degree, teacher preparation and an internship before pursuing certification. Basic certification involves passing state exams. After two years of teaching experience it’s possible to pursue professional certification, which also includes character and fitness testing and a background check.

Essential Information

There are two levels for teacher certification within the state of Washington. The basic level is for those educators without much experience. It requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree along with completion of a teacher’s preparation program and endorsement skills examinations. The professional level is for those educators with a basic certification who also have a minimum of two years teaching in a state school. This level of certification also requires a background check and character and fitness evaluation.

Washington State Residency Teacher Certification

The first level of certification available to teachers in Washington is the Residency Teaching Certificate. A Residency Teaching Certificate is obtained after passing the basic and endorsement skills examinations. Additionally, teachers must have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university, as well as completed a teacher preparation program and an internship.

This level also allows one to become a substitute teacher for life in Washington. Substitutes can teach for up to 30 school days in a row.

Washington State Basic Skills Test Requirements

The first requirement needed to gain teaching certification in Washington state is to pass the Washington Educator Skills Test-Basic (WEST-B) examinations, which cover math, reading and writing. Teaching candidates that come from outside of the state of Washington can apply previously passed tests in lieu of taking the WEST-B. In California and Oregon, the CBEST is used. In other states, the Praxis or PPST is used.

Washington State Content Area Test Requirements

The second requirement necessary for achieving certification to teach in Washington is passing the Washington Educator Skill Test-Endorsement (WEST-E) exam. The WEST-E test focuses on a number of content areas required for teaching specific subjects. The entire list is much to long to list; however, most areas can be combined into groups. Those areas include:

  • Artistic (dance, music, theater and visual arts)
  • Science (biology, chemistry and other sciences)
  • Education (languages, traffic safety, technology and special education)

Professional Certification

An advanced level certification known as the professional certification can be achieved for Residency Teaching Certificate holders who also have two years of teaching experience with an approved state school. The professional certificate testing was created by the Professional Educator Standards Board. They use three standards and 12 criteria as part of their test measurements.

Once completed, candidates must also complete a character and fitness supplement, as well as clear their fingerprints with the Washington State Patrol and FBI.

Teaching Certificate Exemptions

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) offers teaching certificate exemptions for those who have valid NBPTS certificates in a subject area or grade level similar to Washington state’s endorsement requirement in that area. In order to obtain NBPTS certification, applicants must meet certain requirements. The NBPTS requires that individuals have a bachelor’s degree, a minimal of three years of teaching or counseling experience and a valid teaching license during those three or more years. For states where a teaching license is not required, then the individual must have taught in schools that were approved to operate within that state.

Achieving NBPTS certification allows an individual to maintain state teaching certification for ten years. The NBPTS certificate satisfies the professional certificate requirements.

Career Information

Salary information provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that in Washington state, as of May 2015, high school teachers earned a mean annual wage of $61,920 while middle school teachers earned a mean annual wage of $61,260. The mean annual wage for elementary teachers was $60,140.

While the BLS does not supply regional employment growth information for teachers, it does indicate that the 2014-2024 growth for elementary, middle and high school teachers in the nation is expected to be 6%.

Basic Washington teacher certification can be pursued after an individual has completed a bachelor’s degree, teacher training and an internship. Professional certification is an option after two years of teaching experience, and teachers can also opt to take the Residency Teaching Certificate, which enables them to be a substitute teacher in the state of Washington for life.

ANCC vs. AANP: Comparing Nurse Practitioner Certification Exams

It’s certification time for students graduating from NP programs this month. Choosing whether to take the AANP or ANCC nurse practitioner certification exam. if given the option for your specialty, can be a difficult decision. While the exams are overall very similar, there are a few small differences that can help you make your final decision.

So far this week we’ve compared certifying bodies, the cost of certification exams and pass rates. Today, let’s take a look at the structure and content of the two tests by breaking the exam down into its different components.

What is the process for signing up to take the NP certification exam?

ANCC: The first step to taking the ANCC nurse practitioner certification exam is to complete an application online. This application verifies that you possesses an RN license and have graduated from an accredited NP program. Once approved, you will receive an authorization to test notice along with instructions on signing up for a test date, time and location at a Prometric testing center. Applicants have 90 days from receiving this letter to take the test. If necessary, a one-time request to extend this 90 day testing window may be made.

AANP: Signing up for the AANP nurse practitioner certification exam is done through the AANP Certification Program website. Applicants must create an online profile and apply for certification. This application verifies that you possesses an RN license and have graduated from an accredited NP program. This process can be started six months before the intended certification date. Typically, applications take between 3 and 6 weeks to process. Once an applicant is approved, he/she will receive a notificaiton from ProExam including instructions on signing up for a test location, date and time. The test must be taken within 120 days of receiving notification. or the application will need to be re-submitted.

Note: Both the ANCC and AANP recommend signing up for your certification exam quickly upon receiving authorization to test. Testing slots can fill up quickly. So, complete the process in a timely manner so you can test at your preferred location and on your preferred date.

Where will I take my test?

ANCC: Nurse practitioners certifying through the ANCC take the certification exam at a Prometric testing center of their choosing. The exam is computer-based and offered year-round.

AANP: Candidates certifying through the AANP take the NP certification exam at a Prometric testing center of their choosing. The exam is computer-based and offered year-round.

Note: Both certifying bodies administer the nurse practitioner certification exam at Prometric testing centers. However, not all testing centers offer the same exams so check to see if the AANP or ANCC exam will be located most conveniently for you on the Prometric website. Don’t forget to bring your ID with you to the test and don’t be late! The testing center requires you to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of your exam.

What content is covered in the exam?

ANCC: The ANCC breaks nurse practitioner exam content down into different areas for all specialties. The most common areas are foundations for advanced practice, professional practice, and independent practice. For each specialty the percentage of content associated with each area varies. For example, on the Family Nurse Practitioner certification exam. foundations for advanced practice accounts for 34 percent of content (59 questions), professional practice for 26 percent (46 questions), and independent practice for 40 percent (70 questions) of the exam.

When compared to the AANP exam, the ANCC typically has a higher percentage of questions focused on professional issues such as healthcare policy and ethics. So, if you choose to take the ANCC nurse practitioner certification exam, spend time going over these topics in your review books.

AANP: The AANP breaks the certification exam down into four domains; assessment, diagnosis, plan, and evaluation. The domains account for the following percentages of the test: assessment 35 percent (47 questions), diagnosis 25 percent (34 questions), plan 22 percent (30 questions), and evaluation 18 percent (24 questions).

Note: Both exams cover a wide range of topics including anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, health promotion and disease prevention, taking a health history, evaluation of symptoms, developing an evidence-based care plan, diagnostic testing, legal and ethical issues, cultural competence, epidemiology, healthcare economics, and healthcare management.

How long is the test and how many questions does it contain?

ANCC: The ANCC certification exam asks between 175 or 200 questions depending on specialty giving 3.5 or 4 hours to take the test depending on the number of questions. Of these questions, 25 are sample test items that are not counted toward the total score. For example, the Family Nurse Practitioner exam is 4 hours long and contains 200 questions, 25 of which are unscored pretest questions. This means that for the FNP certification exam candidates have, on average, 50 seconds to answer each question with each question accounting for 0.57% of the total exam score.

AANP: The AANP nurse practitioner certification exam contains 150 questions, 15 being sample test items that are not counted towards the final exam score. The exam is 3 hours long. This means that candidates have, on average, 50 seconds to answer each question with each scored question accounting for 0.74% of the total exam score.

Note: For all tests, 15 minutes are allowed before the test to become oriented to the computer testing software. This software is straightforward and easy to use. Test-takers should, however spend at least a few minutes familiarizing themselves with how to operate the testing program correctly.

How do I get my results?

ANCC: Test results are given in a pass/ fail format immediately upon completion of the test. In cases where the test is failed, a score report will be sent including information regarding performance on each content area of the test.

AANP: Exam results are given in a pass/ fail format immediately upon completion of the test. Candidates who fail the exam will receive an official letter indicating strengths and weaknesses of knowledge areas covered on the test.

What happens if I fail the exam?

ANCC: Individuals who do not pass the ANCC certification exam may apply to retake the test after 60 days of the last testing date. The exam cannot be taken more than three times in any 12 month period.

AANP: Candidates who do not pass the certification exam may apply to retake the test. Before being allowed to retake the exam, candidates must complete 15 hours of continuing education credit in the area or areas of weakness identified on the score report. The AANP certification exam may not be taken more than two times in any calendar year.

The Clinical Nutrition Certification Board (CNCB) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt certification agency which provides professional training, examination and certification for health care practitioners.

The discipline of Human Clinical Nutrition applies principles derived from current biochemical and physiological scientific knowledge for the purpose of promoting optimal health while recognizing biochemical individuality. The Certified Clinical Nutritionist assesses a person s nutritional needs to achieve normal physiological function. Assessment includes the use of appropriate test and observations such as case history, anthropomorphic measurements, physical signs, laboratory tests, and nutrition/lifestyle analysis to determine an educational nutrition program. Assessment also provides the basis for referral to a licensed physician, or other health care professional.

The educational protocol may include, among other information, nutrition / lifestyle modification, nutritive supplementation, understanding of physiological/biochemical pathways, and evoking of regenerative processes.

The Purpose of Certification

The Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN) Examination establishes reputable standards of excellence.

Creation of a quality examination, based on a validated scope of practice which appropriately represents the field of clinical nutrition.

Candidate access to the broad scope of clinical nutrition training and a mechanism for recertification every five years, recognizing continued competency in the field.

The CCN Examination Candidate must:

  1. Satisfy the CORE Requirements
  2. Submit Credential Review Application and College Transcripts
  3. Obtain Credential Review Approval
  4. Complete the Post Graduate Studies in Clinical Nutrition Program (PGSCN)™
  5. Achieve a passing score on the online CCN Examination

The CCN Examination processes and the examination data bank are reviewed and revised annually, in accordance with the specifications of the Role Delineation Study. The CNCB utilizes a criterion referenced passing point for each section of the certification examination.

Perianesthesia nursing is a unique nursing specialty requiring its own professional certification program as a means to protect the public. ABPANC sponsors two certification programs for qualified registered nurses caring for patients who have experienced anesthesia, procedures requiring sedation, and analgesia: the Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN®) and the Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA®) programs.

Length of Certification Period

To ensure that certified nurses possess the most up-to-date knowledge and have recent and current experience, the CPAN and CAPA certification credentials are awarded for three (3) years and must be renewed. Exam Administration Computer-Based Testing

The CPAN and CAPA certification programs are sponsored by ABPANC. To assist with the development and administration of the examinations, ABPANC contracts with Professional Examination Service (ProExam). ABPANC launched computer-based testing (CBT) on April 6, 2009. The CPAN and CAPA examinations are administered on a computer at PSI test centers throughout the United States. The feedback about computer-based testing from CPAN and CAPA examination candidates has been overwhelmingly positive. Candidates found the PSI test centers to be easily accessible, staff very helpful and pleasant, the testing room and cubicles quiet and comfortable, the instructions to take the CPAN and/or CAPA examinations easy to understand, and the examinations easy to navigate.

Candidates were also pleased to find out that they could:

  1. Mark questions to come back to them later
  2. Easily change answers
  3. View a list at the end of the examination that showed any questions not answered.

American CPR Training Affiliate Instructor, Tech Sergeant Earl Scott, returned from a 7 months deployment at Al Udeid Air Force base overseas in Qatar. He is originally from Brooklyn, NY but resides in Philadelphia, PA. Friends and family were anxious for his arrival. His family was told to meet at the base for an orientation about what they should expect when their loved one came home. To their surprise- Earl was already home!

On top of being a Tech Sergeant and American CPR Training Affiliate Instructor, Earl is also a teacher, a coach, and the athletic Director at Holmesburg Christian Academy. He cares about his students and made sure he took the time to also explain to them what it was like and what he did overseas. After a little bit of R R he has returned to his normal routine, including teaching for American CPR Training . His love for teaching makes his classes “fun, highly informative and very hands-on”. He uses real world experience and provides a lot of feedback so the American CPR Training participants feel confident when providing lifesaving skills.

Certification Options in Medical and Health Information Technology

Certification for medical records and health information technicians is available from a number of different professional organizations, including the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA). Earning certification is usually optional, but employers may prefer to hire certified technicians, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

American Health Information Management Association

The AHIMA offers the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) designation. This certification is suitable for all medical and health information technicians, including those who specialize in coding or cancer registry. To qualify to sit for the RHIT exam, a person must have earned an associate’s degree from a health information management program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. Graduates of foreign HIM programs may qualify if the program is accredited by an AHIMA-approved organization.

The RHIT exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions and lasts 3.5 hours. Candidates must submit an application along with transcripts, resume and an application fee. Those who do not pass the exam must wait at least 45 days before retesting. Certification must be renewed every two years by earning a minimum of 20 continuing education units (CEUs) during the 2-year period.

American Academy of Professional Coders

The AAPC offers several different medical coding certifications, including the Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Professional Coder – Payer (CPC-P) and Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC), as well as a number of different specialty medical coding designations. Each certification exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions and takes five hours and 40 minutes to complete. Although the AAPC does not always have formal requirements to sit for one of their certification exams, candidates are encouraged to have at least an associate’s degree and at least two years of medical coding experience. Certification holders are required to maintain current membership with the AAPC and earn a certain number of CEUs every two years to maintain certification.

National Cancer Registrars Association

The Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) designation is offered by the NCRA for health information technicians who work with the records of cancer patients. To be eligible to take the certification exam, a person must have an associate’s degree and either experience working in the cancer registry field or a certificate in an NCRA-accredited program. CTR candidates are given 4.5 hours to complete a total of 250 multiple-choice questions. To maintain certification, CTRs must pay an annual maintenance fee and submit CEUs every two years.

Career Outlook for Medical Records and Health Information Technicians

According to the BLS, medical records and health information technicians were predicted to see a 15% growth in employment opportunities from 2014-2024. This above-average growth stemmed from an aging population and a greater need for cancer-related health information services. Medical records and health information technicians earned a median annual salary of $37,110 in 2015, per BLS.

To summarize, certification in medical and health information technology normally isn’t required, but may be preferred by some employers. Certification options exist for general medical health technicians, as well as for those wishing to specialize in coding or a particular area of health care.
