Business Analyst (BA) and Project Manager (PM) roles are closely tied and are critical to a project’s success. The BA is responsible for the analysis and evaluation of customer business objectives and the development of solutions to meet business requirements. The BA acts as the primary interface between business unit end-users and systems development, applications, and programming areas.

Your responsibilities may include any of the following areas:

Rome Business Game

The Rome Business Game is the simulation dedicated to the world of business, international markets, marketing, and business management.

300 participants from around the world will compete against each for an opportunity within the world of international business.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet business and marketing experts, acting as judges, as they propose innovative solutions/products to challenges presented by those same experts. They will also be developing and refining a set of soft skills which are often overlooked yet essential for career success: learning the techniques for proper business management, analysis and insight of business dynamics, team working, and practical problem solving.

The Business Game was born in the fifties with the dual purpose of, on the one hand, providing students interested in working within companies a practice-oriented alternative to a traditional, solely theoretical education and, on the other hand, to test the capacity of students and interns in an environment which is as realistic as possible.

Therefore, it is both a game in which teams compete in order to achieve a common, economic objective, and, simultaneously, a model that simulates the realities of business and the market which it addresses.

The Rome Business Game allows participants to interact in a truly multicultural environment, working in English and developing managerial and technical skills which are extremely important in todays competitive international job market. Managers of our partner companies will present practical business cases to the participants who, divided into teams, have to propose a project (launch of a new product, innovative marketing campaign, practical solution(s) to a company-wide problems, etc.). The winning team has the possibility of an interview with a human resources manager of one of our partner companies or even an internship.

Participants are divided into two categories:

The Junior category is open to undergrad/Bachelor students and those in the first year of their Master s while the Expert category is for those about to graduate or that have already graduated.

The RomeBG is strongly recommended for students of: economics, business administration, management engineering, computer engineering, marketing, polytechnic universities.

The selected participants are divided into teams who will compete against each other to present the best idea. Each day of the 4-day long Festival will be dedicated to one of our partner companies and to their specific challenge. The teams will work on the case study and, at the end of the day, present their project to our panel of judges (representatives of the company) who will then declare the winner.

It is a unique opportunity for the participants as they work in close contact with experts and representatives from major international companies, to get noticed, and to win an interview with the head of Human Resources from one of our partner companies.

All About Human Factors and Engineering

Is using a hands-free telephone to make a call while driving any less dangerous then making the call with a hand-held device? That’s one example of a research question that human factors and engineering psychologists are trying to answer.

Human factors and engineering psychologists use scientific research to improve technology, consumer products, energy systems, telecommunication, transportation, decision-making, work settings and living environments. The goal of their work is to bring a better understanding of what people expect and how people interact with these products and technologies to create safer, more effective and more reliable systems.

What You Can Do

Human factors and engineering psychology offers many career paths. If you break it down to the relationship between people and machines, people and tasks, and people and environments, the possibilities become clearer.

These psychologists study how humans interact with machines and technology. They also study human traits and capacities like vision, attention and decision-making to help design machines and systems people can use correctly, safely and comfortably.

Human factors and engineering psychologists consult with architects and designers of consumer products like telephones, cameras and home appliances to determine such features as the size and placement of operating buttons on these devices.

They also inform strategies for the design of tools and workplace environments that are critical to performance and in many cases, personal safety. For example, human factors psychologists contribute research that guides the design of health care equipment and the layout of operating rooms to minimize the risk of medical errors.

Human factors and engineering psychologists work in academia and within government agencies — such as the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and NASA — although the private sector makes up one of their largest areas of employment. Regardless of the sector where you work, there are many areas within human factors and engineering psychology to focus on, ranging from designing or improving navigation systems to mobile phones, medical equipment, military equipment, aviation technology, traffic systems, motor vehicles and office technology.

Making It Happen

While there are some entry-level opportunities available to those with a bachelor’s degree, most careers in brain science and cognitive psychology begin with a master’s or doctoral degree.

For psychologists with a master’s degree, career options exist in human performance research, such as testing how well a person who has not slept for many hours can remember a short story. They may also work in industrial and organizational psychology, and some with master’s degrees may be hired for certain teaching positions. Most of the work of master’s level professionals will be supervised by a doctoral level psychologist.

Most psychologists with doctoral degrees in brain science and cognition teach and conduct research in academia.

What You Can Earn

According to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s 2005 Salary and Compensation Survey, starting salaries for human factors and engineering psychologists ranged from $48,000 to $75,367 annually. Private consultants with doctoral-level degrees earned an average of $179,160 per year. Salaries are highest for those employed in the private sector.

Doctoral-level engineering psychologists working at for-profit businesses earned an average of $111,368 in 2005, while those in academia earned an average of $92,614 annually and those in government earned an average of $107,314 annually. Those with master’s degrees earned $90,164 annually in business settings, $75,150 annually in university positions and $90,500 annually in government.

How to Become a Police Officer

The duties of a police officer, also known as a law enforcement officer, focus on protecting people and property. They patrol the areas they are assigned, which sometimes include entire jurisdictions, respond to calls, enforce laws, make arrests, issue citations, and occasionally testify in court cases. They often make traffic stops, respond to domestic disturbances, and, at times, provide first aid to someone involved in a traffic accident or injured in a domestic dispute until paramedics arrive. Much of their time is divided between patrolling, writing reports, and filling out forms. In fact, police officers now also perform the immigration duties once exclusive to INS agents, meaning that INS agents are now essentially police officers. Before you can become a police officer, you must first meet the minimum qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Specific qualifications will vary by agency, but typically include being a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years old, and having no felony convictions. Misdemeanors are handled on a case-by-case basis, and many departments also require applicants to be financially responsible. To become a law enforcement officer, you will also have to meet physical fitness, medical, vision, and hearing requirements. Testing for these are part of the hiring process, as well as interviews, a background check, written exam, drug test, written exam, and psychological evaluation. You will also have to meet the educational and training requirements.

Education Training

Each agency will have their own educational requirements. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), some agencies require only a high school diploma, while others require some college coursework or a college degree. Many agencies encourage their officers to take law enforcement-related college courses throughout their careers. Earning an associate degree in criminal justice will usually allow you to meet the educational requirements and provide you with knowledge of the law, criminal justice system, criminal behavior, and more, which will benefit you in this career. Each agency will have training requirements that must be met as well. The majority of agencies will have a training academy, while smaller agencies may have you complete your training at a local college, university, or through a nearby, larger agency s academy. Through the academy you will receive training in areas such as defensive tactics, driving, tactical, firearms, and laws and regulations, preparing you for your career.

Career Statistics

The hiring process and training academy can take around 12 to 18 months, all together, though this may vary by agency. After graduating from the academy, you will be a probationary officer, which typically means you will be constantly supervised, have limited responsibilities, and in most cases, are eligible to be relieved of duty easier than if you were not on probation. The length of probation varies by agency. The BLS shows that the average salary for a police officer is $53,540 a year. However, what you earn will depend on several factors, including the agency you work for, location, performance, and amount of experience.

School Psychologist Overview

Overview

School psychologists don’t spend their days writing college recommendations. Rather, these professionals are concerned with the stress high school seniors face, such as applying to colleges. They might role-play with students on the autism spectrum. Or they might counsel and refer a student who has expressed suicidal thoughts. They also might discuss a student’s anxiety and depression issues with a concerned parent.

A school psychologist’s job duties are varied. But at the core, these professionals identify, diagnose and treat students with learning disabilities, mental disorders and other behavioral, cognitive or emotional problems. They also develop plans for addressing these issues, and refer students to other mental health resources when necessary. Their job also entails a copious amount of documentation and paperwork.

Dr. Pamela Agan-Smith, a school psychologist, has worked with students in the Greenville Central School District in Greenville, New York, for more than 30 years, and says the biggest issues facing her students these days involve mental health. “Public school students face a pretty stressful environment,” she notes. For some students, this stress morphs into suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression, and school psychologists are the point person in addressing these concerns.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that this profession will grow at a rate of 20 percent between 2014 and 2024, which will equate to 30,500 new jobs for school psychologists. Rising school enrollment, as well as a heightened awareness of the stresses and disabilities that students face, is driving the demand for more school psychologists. However, this demand is tempered by state and local funding for schools, which is inadequate in some cases.

Training

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree, aspiring school psychologists will need to complete a graduate or doctorate degree program in school psychology. Most of the 200-some programs in the U.S. require their students to complete academic coursework, supervised fieldwork and an internship in order to graduate.

After graduating, school psychologists will need to obtain a license in the state where they hope to practice. Licensure requirements vary by state. National certification, which is optional, but nonetheless demonstrates a high level of expertise, is offered through the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

Course Overview

Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes, and includes individual and social, human and animal, normal and abnormal aspects.

First year Psychology is taken with two other subjects selected from the extensive Arts menu. Second year and third year (the final year) of the BA in Psychology involve only courses in Psychology.
