10 Steps For Starting a Car Wash From The Ground Up

As a 40 year veteran car wash equipment manufacturer and site developer, we’ve seen it all. We know what a daunting and potentially confusing process starting a new car wash can be. What comes first? Prospecting site locations? Securing financing? Assessing your market? How soon should you begin marketing? How long will the process take?

While we certainly can’t cover everything you need to know to start a car wash in a single post, we can take a few words to cover what we feel are the 10 most important steps to launching your own car wash business.

1) Location is Everything Go Scouting

Car washes aren’t automatically successful. Great care must be taken when selecting the location on which you want to build. Our Site Model Pages have in-depth descriptions of location criteria to consider (including population, competition, street types, car counts, and more) and our site development services can help you select and approve the best locations available in your area.

Start by driving around your target area, paying close attention to the relative traffic, types of local businesses, and anything that looks for sale. Get a feel for your potential market. You should also visit a commercial real estate MLS like Loopnet.com or many others. Be sure to take your time and never rush into a purchase.

2) Review the Competition

Try to get a feel for the local car washes in the area. How many customers do they have and how aggressively are they marketing? What will they do when you open your wash? Can they afford a multi-million dollar renovation to bring their wash in line with yours? Are they debt free and can they cut prices to outcompete you (with your interest payments) in the short term? Are their customers frequent users and very loyal—or are they waiting for something better?

Entrenched local competition can be dangerous, even for Totally Tommy buildings, and selecting a location with some elbow room between you and competitors is important. But don’t worry too much about single stall automatic car washes or local fundraisers—you’ll be working in a completely different weight class.

3) Do the Paperwork

Find out what local city or county department handles business licenses and request an application, as well as information on local utility usage codes, insurance requirements, tax rates, and other requirements for opening a business. You will also need a Taxpayer Identification Number and you should use the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s trademark search tool to check your brand then register to claim it.

Each area and city has different rules, so make sure you take the time to understand everything and keep your business in line. If you can, also get information on local sanitary sewers (for your waste water), utility prices, water usage limits, and other regulations.

4) Planning and Approval Process

Set up a meeting with the city planner. Show them a rendering of your concept and try to get verbal approval of the design—or a list of probable issues to address. If you have approval you can set up a formal meeting to present your plans and have them voted on at a city council meeting. With luck, your Totally Tommy building with its modern style, efficient design, and great investment potential will blow them away! Try to be friendly, optimistic, and down to earth. If the city gets on board with your project it can make the whole process move along more smoothly.

5) Research Car Washes

Tour as many successful car washes as possible to see what makes them tick—especially if you haven’t been in the business very long. Check out automatic car washes, partially automatic, express, detailing, and other washes to see how they differ from one another. Operations, promotions, pricing, services, demographics… Try to learn as much as you can and develop as deep a background as you can with operations, staffing policies, equipment repair, and customer management (aka, complaints ).

To help out, our team has training available to teach you everything you need to know BEFORE you’re trying to run your wash on hot days with long lines.

6) Operations Decisions

Will you run your car wash independently or will you have a franchise, LLC, or S-corp? There are many models, each with pros and cons. Franchises offer support at the cost of a residual. Solo operations offer total freedom but deprive you of much-needed backup and brand awareness. How much personal involvement are you looking for? If you plan on hiring a manager instead of handling things yourself, make sure he or she has the necessary qualifications and is heavily invested in your future success.

7) Make a Business Plan!

Your car wash business plan (click for outline) should focus on both long term and short term operations. Use a professional service and remember that the more detailed, thorough, and researched your plan is, the better it will look to investors or your bank. Include costs (up front and overhead costs), planning for building to long-term revenue management, and marketing strategies (launch and long-term). Professional proforma companies are ready to help and our team is also standing by with years of experience to back up our advice.

8) Get Financing

This is likely the most challenging step, and your success here will largely depend on how well you’ve researched and prepared your business plan ahead of time. A solid revenue model can help convince investors to put up the capital for your new car wash business, so be prepared to demonstrate that you need enough funding for a truly high quality car wash facility and equipment with great return potential. You will also need a convincing resume with business and/or car wash experience, and a solid marketing plan.

9) Build the Right Wash

Car washes thrive when they capture the attention of the local market and are designed to make turning in, purchasing a wash, and moving through the tunnel as quick and easy as possible. The Totally Tommy building is the best way to do just this, drawing huge numbers of passing customers with a great looking building, perfected layouts, and a full and fast service menu. Proven in scenarios around the country, every component of this facility design has been carefully thought out to create a single, cohesive investment that pays off. From our towers to our pay system, deceleration lanes, glass walls, stainless steel equipment, and clear roof, everything is designed to project sophistication, professionalism, and value. So why waste money reinventing the wheel, and why risk building a second-best wash when a Totally Tommy wash is waiting for you?

10) Market your New Business

Customers don’t know what they don’t know, so don’t just expect them to line up without any effort on your part. Make sure to let the community know about your wash ahead of the grand opening with onsite advertising as well as print, radio, local web, and possibly TV advertisements. You’ll begin to build a curious customer base who will drop buy and tell their friends and family afterwards. $15,000 or $1 / car for initial marketing including billboards, mailings to 5 mile radius, promotional washes, and radio commercials is a good place to start at your launch and $.10 / car is a standard ballpark long-term rate for the future. One or two day Social media campaigns (incentivize customers with free washes for best results) can also be highly successful. Be prepared to collect feedback and adapt your marketing program for the greatest possible effectiveness moving forwards.

Launching any business, and especially a brick and mortar car wash filled with high-end technology, is a complex and daunting prospect. But don’t worry. The team at Tommy Car Wash Systems has hundreds of washes behind us with thousands of installations and developments. We know the steps you’ll need to take to get your wash planed, approved, built, and operational, and we’ll help you turn a fantastic business opportunity into an even better reality.

Car Wash Self-service Business Plan

Company Summary

Auto Paradise is a dynamic start-up company that will provide exceptional car care services to the members of the San Angelo community. Quality services that exceed expectations will establish Auto Paradise as the premiere car wash service in San Angelo, Texas. It will provide that following products and services to the local community:

  1. Two Laser Automatic “touch-free and spot-free” car wash bays
  2. Four “self-serve” bays
  3. Vacuum and car wash vending services
  4. Reverse osmosis drinking water.

Auto Paradise will establish its first location one lot from the intersection of Avenue N and Byrant Avenue, which are two of the busiest streets in San Angelo. The lot faces Avenue N and will be accessible from two sides. The ATM and RO dispensers will be accessible from a side road and will not interfere with the car wash traffic.

The facility will have two automatic car wash bays, four self-serve bays and an equipment room/office in the middle of the bays. It will also have four high powered vacuum islands (eight total vacuums), vending area, and an ATM/RO water area.

2.1 Company Ownership

Mr. Lewallen will create Auto Paradise as a Texas C corporation based in Tom Green County. Mr. and Mrs. Lewallen will be the majority owners (80%) with principal investors owning the remaining 20%. As of this writing, it has not yet been chartered and Mr. Lewallen is still considering alternatives.

2.2 Start-up Summary

Total projected start-up expenses (including construction, equipment, land, landscaping and related start-up expenses) come to $934,100. The start-up costs are to be financed by direct owner investment and long term financing.

A. Investment Options. Auto Paradise will open approximately 90 days after securing financing. Mr. Lewallen is offering several ways to invest in Auto Paradise:

  1. Company stock: Mr. Lewallen is offering 20% of company stock to investors. Auto Paradise is offering 1% of company stock for $7,500. Capital will help establish the first Auto Paradise location and provide “head start” on the second location. Auto Paradise plans to distribute $2,500 per 1% share each of the first three years.
  2. Secured Investment: Mr. Lewallen is offering a guaranteed 10% return for a three year investment. Mr. Lewallen is willing to secure these investments with personal assets/investments.

B. Financing. The SBA loan that Mr. Lewallen will secure from the SBA is structured to ensure Auto Paradise’s success during the early months of operation. The $740,400 loan includes two elements designed to help build operating capital. First, the loan includes a 10% ($69,000) construction contingency that will convert to operating capital if the construction costs are consistent with the estimate. It also includes 9 months of interim interest which will defer the long-term mortgage payment for 9 months (6 months of operation).

C. Land. Auto Paradise is in the process of securing a lot near (one lot from corner) the intersection of Bryant Ave. and Avenue N, which are two of the busiest streets in San Angelo. The lot will be 165′ along Avenue N and 175′ deep. The purchase is pending the results of a phase I environmental inspection, which is expected to produce favorable results.

D. Construction. Getting a firm construction bid is the next step in the process after securing the initial investors. The architect plans and an actual bid will be the last elements necessary to secure bank financing. The estimates included are from previous projects and are considered generous (on the high-side). The estimated $390,000 includes total construction costs for two automatic and four self-serve bays, parking lot, signage, landscaping and architect fees.

E. Construction Contingency. The 10% construction contingency will cover any unexpected expenses or shortfalls. This may be re-negotiated as a “line of credit” in order to reduce the amount of the loan.

F. Equipment. Washing Equipment of Texas (WET) has provided a detailed estimate for the purchase and installation of the equipment for two automatic bays, four self-serve bays, four vacuum islands (eight vacuums) and a reverse osmosis water dispenser. WET, which is located in San Angelo, will also provide all maintenance and repair services.

The assumptions are shown in the following tables and chart.

Car Donation Minnesota #donate #a #car #mn

#

Nov 2nd, 2014 by admin

Car donations help put unwanted or defunct vehicles to better use. Several non-profit UK charities have managed to extend or sustain their services, thanks to the funds derived from selling or auctioning donated cars. Vehicles that are not fit for the road are scrapped or recycled in an eco-friendly manner before being monetized.

Funds garnered from car donations are used to address a myriad of social causes, such as offering shelter, financial, emotional and medical support to the needy across age groups, combating environmental issues and protecting flora and fauna, etc.

Best Way to Donate Cars

Those who wish to donate cars to a cause that’s close to their hearts can directly get in touch with a charity that caters to such purposes. However, car donations today are much more simple and free of cost, courtesy GiveACar – a non-profit establishment that collects donated cars from the owners, recycles, scraps, or auctions the vehicles and transfers the proceeds to the chosen charity. GiveACar works to maximise returns from the donated vehicle in order to fund a cause chosen by the donor. Some charities offer a flexible arrangement for car owners to donate a part of the proceeds generated by GiveACar to the cause, while retaining the rest for personal use.

Donating Scrap Cars

While car donations in the US attract tax benefits, those in the UK are purely non-profit transactions. It is also understandable than not everyone is financially secure enough to simply donate a car, irrespective of its condition. However, it is also possible to dispose scrap or damaged car, get a fair compensation and still contribute towards a cause, by availing services of select establishments in the UK. These enterprises, however, retain a part of the funds for their own charity initiatives.

Beneficiaries of Car Donations

Car donations, especially via Giveacar, have helped fund over 1000 charities in the country. In general, these donations are focused on providing timely support to many people in the UK and across the world, depending on the charities’ operational network. Some of them address causes in Europe, and few others work to improve the quality of life of children residing in African countries. Irrespective of their scope of operations, charities make best use of car donations to reach out and literally aid anyone who seeks help.

Car donations can prove to be manna from heaven for those desperately in need of funds; and with the right charity, the monetary blessing is bound to reach them.

Best Car Insurance Companies

The Contenders: Page 2

Very friendly, personal, and informative staff. I enjoyed the choices that were given to me and how my coverages suited my needs and budget. I am a non-standard customer and my rate compared to the other non-standard insurance companies was lower & I received better customer service.

Extraordinary customer service through and through! This is one of the few places that I’ve shopped where I really felt like the agents listened to me and understood my needs. My only regret is not checking them out sooner.

22Arbella Insurance

23Farm Bureau Insurance

Farm Bureau has paid every claim we have had fairly and quickly. I hydroplaned after a tire blew out and my Honda flew over an deep embankment and landed upright but the damage was significant. Again, I was easing out of a parking place at a restaurant when a large pickup blew through the lot and couldn’t stop. My car was a total loss and Farm Bureau gave me what seemed to be more than they needed to based on my research of my car’s worth. A third time, I bumped someone at a right turn stop sign and they took care of the dent on the other car, no questions asked. If I were them, I would refer me to another company, but they continue to offer great service at an very fair price and have just insured our new condo at an excellent rate..

Paid every claim we had with no problems. We were involved in agriculture and had several accidents. One involved one of our trucks hitting a gasoline carrier. Brakes on our truck went out on a crossroad and tore open the gas truck. Closed main highway for about 3 hours. Farm Bureau took care or it all.

We were rear ended by a driver with Farm Bureau insurance. My wife and I both had injuries, and Farm Bureau were compassionate and efficient in quickly making sure that we had sufficient money to pay our medical expenses.

Have had them for 16 years, they have the best rates. great customer service and they truly care

24Erie Insurance

Working with insurance adjusters on a daily basis, I couldn’t image carrying insurance through any other company. I find Erie to be the most likely to settle claims, which makes me feel extremely well-covered when I’m on the road. I know that if something happens, and the other person doesn’t have insurance, my company will take care of me without pushing back or thinking of dropping me. I love ERIE!.

I have had ERIE for auto and home owners for 35+ years. Having done comparisons from time to time, I have not been able to get better rates and coverage for my dollar spent. Their claims service, to me, is outstanding. They are truly Above All in Service The only draw back is that they are somewhat regional.

Left Nationwide after 33 years for Erie. 3 Cars and 2 House policies and saved over 30%. Now that’s a big savings that no one could match for the same coverage. Nothing wrong with Nationwide, just kept increasing the price with no claims. After a lot of checking, Erie was the best choice to be found.

Been with erie for years and let me tell you they are definitely the cheapest insurance around.

25Infinity Insurance

Sucks to be the guy you hit but it’s cheap.

ALTHO they did not give me discounts, at least they did not charge an arm and a LEG after my one accident. Mercury has been faithful and very helpful when I am a couple days late on payment. DARN ALLSTATE! They paid the other party over and over and over, even though the damage to my fender was worse, they only had a slight tap on rear end, but got FULL VALUE for their ‘destroyed’ car, and all 5 occupants got PT and chiropractic visits 3x each. I WAS ANGRY! They were not injured, and the car was repairable. But Mercury came through and gave me a good deal for the upcoming years!

Mercury gave me a lower auto insurance quote than any of the others that I have checked that are ranked higher on this list.

27Elephant Insurance

We used to have Geico. We have a clean driving record no accidents and our insurance goes up. So we changed to Elephant and love it! And it is a whole lot less with the same coverages.

28Auto-Owners Insurance

I’ve dealt with them on two homeowner claims (for my grandmother) and three auto claims (a $68k uninsured motorist claim and a broken windshield claim on my cars and my mom’s car after she hit a deer). These claims have spanned the last nine years and each one was handled with a high level of professionalism, but also with decency, kindness and compassion. They are truly an honest company that pays the claims they owe quickly and fairly. When I was injured by the uninsured motorist in 2010, the first thing my attorney said when he saw that I had A-O was you have nothing to worry about, they will take care of you.

Actually pay claims. Even when on an older vehicle with little damage.

The rates are much better on a Homeowners policy than I have ever had with State Farm or Grange. Great agents also.

Very prompt in handling and paying the only claim I have had with them which was roof replacement on my ho me. H ave never had to make a claim on my auto insurance with them but presume they would handle it in the same satisfactory way. I like their discount for paying annual premiums in full. I also like the fact that they do not spend exorbitant amounts of money for misleading T.V. commercials as many other companies do.

29Shelter Insurance

Been with them for over 10 years. The customer service is great, response time is excellent, and the cost of coverage is outstanding.

Cheapest insurance and good service, too. They were there when I needed them, professional, and very efficient.

I’ve been with Wawanesa for years and you can’t beat their prices or customer service in handling claims.

Best price out there

32California Casualty

They have the lowest complaint ratio in California. They mainly market to teachers, police officers, fire fighters, and nurses. They’re also endorsed by the NEA and California Teacher’s Association. They’re a great family owned company!

California Casualty is a great company! Association based, they work with teachers, fire fighters, policemen and nurses. They have to adhere to a higher standard when responding to claims so they don’t lose their endorsements. They are endorsed by over 1k associations nationwide. They also have the NEA endorsement. 97% claims satisfaction.

We have worked with Calcas for over 20 years and have been completely satisfied with our rates and coverage.

Man my insurance (Safe Auto) needs to get ranked up! – wefixbadcredit1

Yes, I completely agree

Nice service at a great price.

34Lincoln Insurance

I have been with State Farm for 35 yrs. And it’s time for a change. I rec’d my new premium and it increased $341. Encompass was less than half.
Since they are a subsidiary of Allstate and their reviews are good, I will be going with them. State Farm has been good for me, but now in 2013, I can’t afford to be paying out all these increases for exactly the same coverage. Bye, bye SF xoxoxo

Awesome insurance and great coverage. You will know their goodness if you ever need your car repaired. Even in a not my fault accident, PEMCO provided all the assistant needed in dealing with other person’s insurance.

Cheap insurance. Paid above market value for my car when I totalled it. Good costumer service. Generally a great company, Though I am forced to get new insurance after getting a dui. Overall great care.

38COUNTRY Financial

39Access General Insurance

Worst insurance company. Never get insurance with them.

First time getting this insurance so far it’s been good!

Can’t believe Direct wasn’t on this list. The one on White Bridge Pk in Nashville is the BEST. Great customer service!

  1. Choose to donate any type of vehicle. We take cars and trucks, in addition to a variety of recreational vehicles. Feel free to give us your RV, motorcycle, boat, plane or jet skis. If the vehicle no longer works, that’s perfectly OK, too.
  2. Get in touch. Just give us a call at (866) 233-8586 or contact us through our website vehicle donation form. When you get in touch, let us know when will be the best time for us to come tow the car away.

That’s everything that’s needed on your end. Our team will show up on the date and time you specified to retrieve the vehicle. We then auction it, using the proceeds toward the many Goodwill programs and services in your state. You’ll also receive a top tax receipt for your deduction.

Which Charity Should You Choose?

Maybe you’re thinking, “I want to donate my car to charity,” but you’re not sure which charity to work with.

First, when you decide to make car donations to charity, you need to make sure you’re giving to a legitimate charity that is registered as tax exempt with the IRS.

Below are some commonly thought of nonprofits that take car donations:

Goodwill Car Donation: Goodwill organizations direct the proceeds of vehicle donations towards many programs and services for job seekers, youth, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and other specialized needs. A common saying you’ll hear from Goodwill organizations is “A hand up, not a hand out”. One fantastic benefit of choosing Goodwill is that all vehicle donation proceeds are distributed to the local community where the donation took place.

Kars4kids.org: Directs the proceeds of vehicle donations towards programs and services for Jewish children and their families.

National Kidney Foundation: Directs the proceeds of vehicle donations towards programs and services that have to do with the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease.
