5 Best Online Backup Services for Small Businesses – Page 2

Crashplan+

Crashplan+ is a moderately-priced service with both home and business plans. The business plans are reasonably priced; you can either pay $7.49 per-computer for unlimited storage, or pay for a specific amount of storage. Their online calculator will quickly show which option is the best deal. The company claims it’s fully committed to the unlimited plans and will not take them away.

The Crashplan+ feature set includes backups to local servers or removable media, 30-day free trials and HIPAA compliance. The free version makes backups to your removable media or servers, and to any other servers under your control, but not to Crashplan’s servers.

JungleDisk

JungleDisk offers zero-knowledge security similar to SpiderOak, and a unique pay-as-you-go pricing structure: you pay exactly for what you use, rather than purchasing fixed blocks of storage sizes.

The Server edition costs $5 per server per month plus $0.15 per GB. You have a choice of storing your data on Amazon’s S3 cloud service, or on the Rackspace Cloud. Rackspace is a popular and reliable hosting service, and it owns JungleDisk.

You can choose from three JungleDisk editions: Personal, Workgroup and Server. Personal is designed for a single user using one or more devices. Workgroup support multiple users in a single storage account, with access controls and shared and private data. Server comes with server-friendly reporting and remote administration features.

Barracuda Backup Service

Barracuda Backup Service is a higher-priced service for shops that want more control, flexibility, and comprehensive central administration of multiple locations. It offers offsite network backups integrated with local backups.

Offsite backups can be hosted on Barracuda’s cloud infrastructure or mirrored on your own sites, and you can mix and match local and remote storage. So you might want to store important files offsite and locally, and less-important files locally only, for example.

You get fine-grained control of scheduling, from real-time backups of important files to whatever interval you want for other files. Barracuda meets HIPAA and Gramm-Leach-Bliley security requirements.

You start by purchasing a Barracuda backup appliance, which is a dedicated backup server pre-loaded with backup and monitoring software. Pricing starts at $999 for the 100GB-capacity 190 model server (250GB raw capacity) and go all the way up to about $45,000 for the model 990, which has 24 TB raw capacity and about 12 TB backup capacity.

Then offsite storage costs $50 per month per 100GB, with no other costs; no agent, per-server, or client access licenses. You get 24×7 technical support, and continual monitoring of your server health. Visit the information page for links to an informative video and a live demo.

How to Back Up Microsoft Outlook

Understand how Outlook stores data. All of your Outlook information, including emails, folders, contacts, calendars. and more, is stored in a single .pst or .ost file file on your computer. Copying this file will create a full backup of your Outlook information.

Open the folder containing your Outlook data file. You’ll need to navigate to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\. There are a couple of ways that you can do this: [1]

  • You can open an Explorer window and navigate to this folder, but you’ll need to display hidden files first. Click the “View” tab and select “Hidden items,” or click the “View” menu, select “Folder options,” and then check “Display hidden files and folders.” This will allow you to see the “AppData” folder in your User folder.
  • You can press ⊞ Win. type %appdata%. and press ↵ Enter. This will open the “Roaming” folder. Go up one level so that you’re in the “AppData” folder, then open “Local” → “Microsoft” → “Outlook.”
  • In Windows XP, the location is C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ .

Find the .pst and .ost files. These are the data files for that user’s Outlook program. The files will be named after the email address they are associated with. Most users will have .pst files, while Exchange users will typically have an .ost file.

  • Copy the file by selecting it and then pressing Ctrl + C or right-click it and select “Copy.”

Decide how you want to backup the file. There are several ways that you can securely backup this data file, depending on your needs. Creating multiple backups will help ensure that your file stays safe in case something goes wrong.

  • You can copy the file to a USB drive. Most .pst files will be around 10-100 MB in size, which should fit on most USB drives.
  • You can burn the file to a disc. This allows you to file the disc away, but may not be the best use of a whole disc due to the relatively small file size. See How to Burn a DVD for more details.
  • You can upload the file to a cloud storage service such as Google Drive or OneDrive. This has the benefit of giving you access to the file anywhere you can connect to the internet. See How to Back Up Data for more details on uploading files to a cloud storage service.

    How to backup Yahoo! emails

In order to back-up the emails stored in your online Yahoo account, you need to download them on your computer to a local folder. In order to do that, you need to define your Yahoo mail account in Zimbra desktop application. As Yahoo does not offer this option for free (if you have an Yahoo Plus account you can use POP3), you need Zimbra that allows you to download all your yahoo emails locally. When the emails are on your computer in a local folder, you can back them up using the Zimbra plugin from Backup4all.

How to configure Yahoo in Zimbra desktop application

Zimbra Desktop is an email client which allows you to synchronize the Yahoo! account including: mails, contacts, and calendar items.

    1. Open Zimbra desktop
    2. Press Add new account.
    3. From the Account type list, select Yahoo!
    4. Type your account details as asked.
    5. Press Validate and Save.

    How to configure Backup4all

Once you have your Yahoo emails on your local computer, you can configure Backup4all to automatically back them up. To do so:

    1. Download the Zimbra desktop plugin for Backup4all from this download link
    2. Install the plugin in Backup4all: go to File- Tools- Plugins- Addnew plugin. (in Backup4all 4, go to Tools- Plugins- Add)
    3. Go to File- New Backup
    4. Type a name for your backup in the Backup name field.
    5. Choose a location where you want to save the backup. Press Next.
    6. From the Selection of files and folders list, choose Zimbra desktop. Press Next.
    7. Choose how do you want to backup.
    8. Press Save and choose Save and run.

How to backup Yahoo! emails using Thunderbird

Another solution is to use YPOPS. but it works only on computers running Windows XP. After YPOPS! is installed you will need to configure Thunderbird so that it will include your Yahoo Mail account as a POP3 email account. This way all your emails will be downloaded from Yahoo Mail to your local computer. If you want to keep a copy of your email messages on Yahoo Mail too, make sure the option “Leave a copy of messages on server” is enabled (detailed in the steps below). Steps needed to configure Thunderbird with YPOPS!:

Perform a Send and Receive to get all your emails from your Yahoo account. The first time you try to access the account, Thunderbird will ask for the password.
After that, you need to create a backup job using the Thunderbird plugin from here .

The backup will run and your Thunderbird emails and settings will be backed up to the designated destination.

    Backup4all 5.x, 4.x
    Zimbra desktop 7.x
    YPOPs! 0.9.5.8 or higher
    Mozilla Thunderbird 2

The Best Backup Software of 2017

    Why Back Up Your PC?

In August of 2016, Delta Airlines had to cancel more than 1,300 flights, at a cost of $100 million, not because of weather or mechanical problems, but because the company’s computer systems went down. If it can happen to a big corporation like Delta, don’t think it can’t happen to you. All technology, whether it’s a brand new iMac, a spaceship, a hover board, a webmail service, or a ten-year-old PC running Windows Vista, can potentially take a sudden nosedive. Hard drives are notorious for crashing, and ransomware can make a computer’s contents inaccessible. Sometimes it’s not even a fault of the technology: Fires, flooding, and other natural disasters can render PCs and other tech hardware inoperable. And laptops get stolen. You need insurance. With digital content becoming paramount for not only business assets documents, plans, financial spreadsheets but also for personal assets such as family photos, videos, and music, protecting with backup software is more important than ever.

Both Windows and Mac OS X have beefed up their built-in backup tools in recent years. Windows 10 includes a File History feature and a full disk backup feature, and OS X includes its Time Machine software. Both of these are well worth running, but they both have some limitations, lacking some of the extra benefits you get from running standalone backup software.

    How Backup Software Works

The concept behind backup software is pretty simple: Make a copy of your files on storage separate from your main hard drive. That storage can be another drive, an external drive, a NAS, a rewritable disc, or an online storage and syncing service. Should you lose the files, either through disaster or simply by deleting them or overwriting them, you can just restore them from the saved copies.

But in order for this to work, the copies of your files must be updated regularly. Most backup software lets you schedule scans of your hard drive for new and changed files daily, weekly, or monthly, but my preferred option is to have the software continually (or at least, say, every 15 minutes) monitor your drive for changed or new files. Several products here offer this continuous backup option.

More granular options include whether backups are full, incremental, or differential. The first is pretty obvious all the data you’ve selected for backup is copied in its entirety. Incremental backup saves system resources by only backing up changes in files from the last incremental backup, and differential backup saves all changes from the last full backup. With incremental, you need the latest full backup and all the intermediary backup data to restore a file to its original state, whereas with differential, you just need the last set of differential backup data and the first full one.

A couple of security options are usually available when setting up your backup: password protection and encryption. Using both of these is a good idea if the data you’re backing up is at all sensitive. Another option offered by many backup applications is versioning. This lets you specify how many previous versions of your files you want to preserve, and for how long. I recommend maxing this out, especially when you’re storing backups locally, with no annual fee for hosted online backup. In any case, the incremental changes don’t eat up a ton of space.

A step further than the simple copying of files is copying the entire hard drive, including system files, as what’s called a disk image. This contains every bit of data on the drive and offers stronger protection, since it enables you to recreate a system after a hard drive failure. Some products can even update a disk image nearly continuously. But that extra protection comes at the price of more complexity in setting up and restoring. Usually you’ll need to run a pre-boot environment from startup media to restore a system image, since doing so from within your main OS isn’t possible.

For another highly recommended approach to backup, consider online backup. also known as cloud backup. Services like IDrive and SOS Online Backup securely send your data over the internet and save it on remote file servers in encrypted form. The big plus of this option is that the data is off your premises, and therefore not susceptible to local disasters. The downside is that they tie you to annual fees, and uploading and downloading backups is slower than loading local copies. Some online backup services, such as CrashPlan and SOS Online Backup, include software for making local backups, as well.

    Restoring From Backup

How you set up your backup affects how you can restore it. If you’ve backed up your entire disk image, you’ll need to start the system from bootable media such as a DVD or USB stick that you created in the software. (You should definitely create one of these types of rescue media if your software offers it.) You also may need to attach another external drive containing the backup data along with the boot media. Several of the programs included here even let you restore data from one PC to another that has different hardware. This is useful when you simply want to migrate to new PC hardware, as opposed to recovering from a disaster.

For restoring individual files, several of the applications, such as Acronis True Image and Paragon Backup Recovery, give you the option of choosing among previous versions of the files you’ve saved. Which file versions are available to restore depends on how frequently you’ve run backups. This is why the continuous backup option mentioned above is preferable. With that option, ideally, every time you save a file, it’s backed up and you can get back to any previous point in time.

How to recover deleted text messages on your Android phone

You never get used to that gut-wrenching moment when one realizes a very important SMS message or thread has just been deleted. What do you do now? Desperate users will go through anything to save those crucial messages if the trashed information is important enough. Recovering deleted messages is no easy feat, but jumping some hoops will definitely get you somewhere. There are some chances you can get those precious text messages back, and we can help you get to them!

Did you ever hear people say that files don t necessarily disappear from your computer when you delete them? This is definitely true. All those files are hidden somewhere in the hard drive, waiting to be retrieved or replaced. This is exactly what happens with Android phones as well. Everything we delete, including SMS messages, sticks around until enough time passes by and/or the space is needed to store other data.

A little about how deletion works

You may still be wondering how this is even possible. It s actually not a very complicated concept once we understand how deletion works. In most cases, trashing a file (in this case an SMS or MMS message) doesn t really erase it from the system; or at least it doesn t do it right away.

Your device will simply mark this file as inactive. In other words, it is made invisible and replaceable. As you continue using your device and adding new files, these start replacing deleted content. In other words, it is best that you stop using your phone if you really need to recover that text message. because it may get permanently wiped out after some time.

Carriers often have all your texts stored

This is not necessarily a solution, but it is still information that may be helpful in some cases. As it turns out, many wireless providers store your text messaging records and other data for extended periods of time (here is a chart with carrier data retention periods ). The only problem is they will likely not release that information to you simply because you accidentally deleted something.

However, some carriers may cooperate with the police if necessary. These companies have also been known to help users facing legal complications, as these messages could serve as evidence in a court of law. This won t help most of us, though, so let s move on to what you can do to actually obtain results.

    Use data recovery software

So it s all lost and you really, really want that text message. It may be possible to obtain it by using data recovery software, which can scan your phone for deleted content and retrieve whatever may still be in existence.

Doing a simple Google search will show you plenty of data recovery tools for Android devices. Some are free, some are not, but many of the paid ones still offer a free trial period. Some of the most popular ones are Android Data Recovery. Dr. Fone. Coolmuster Android SMS+Contacts Recovery and FonePaw Android Data Recovery .

After you have the software, the process is pretty straight forward. Just install the program on your PC and run it. The only trick is that you will need to turn USB Debugging on. This option is under Developer Tools, in your Android Settings app.

Each software has its own specific steps. Some will require you to use an Android app to load everything to the computer, while other services can have the PC software do all the heavy lifting. Just make sure you follow instructions for your specific program.

After you let the program do its thing, you should be presented with all the files you can recover.

Making sure this doesn t happen again

You just realized this whole retrieving deleted text messages isn t exactly an easy feat. And it shouldn t really be you just got rid of the darn thing! You just happen to be lucky computing devices work a certain way. Regardless, the best way to solve something is to prevent it. There s many apps that can help you backup your text messages, as well as other content. Let s take a look at some of them.

    SMS Backup Restore

This is among the most popular backup apps of its kind, with over 5 million downloads and a 4.5-star rating. And it s no wonder the service managed to get such a good reputation it is free to download and happens to have a pretty full set of features.

For starters, this application can store your text messages in XML format. It s also very convenient that the software can save your data both locally and in the cloud. It supports Email, Google Drive and Dropbox (through an add-on app). To make matters even more exciting, users can even schedule automatic updates, making sure you don t forget to store your SMS messages manually.

    Easy Backup Restore

Need something that covers a bit more than SMS messages? Easy Backup Restore does very well for being a free app. This is a full-fledged backup solution that can store your SMS, MMS, call logs, calendar, bookmarks, dictionary contacts and apps.

It also happens to support SD cards, Gmail, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and even OneDrive. And yes, you can also schedule your automatic updates. And if you have root access, Easy Backup Restore can also handle apps and app data.

    Conclusion

Sadly, there s not much else we can do, unless you want to pay very hefty amounts of cash to data specialists so they can take your phone into a lab and dissect it. These tips should keep you pretty well covered, though. Just be sure to be a bit more careful next time, and use the preventive applications we told you about!
