What Are the Degrees of Formality in Business Attire, business attire.#Business #attire

What Is Business Attire?

Business attire

Business attire refers to the clothing that employees wear to work. Depending on the workplace, various levels of the formality of business attire are expected and the norm. The dress codes range from traditional and formal to smart casual, business casual, and casual.

Employees who want to fit well in their workplace, wear the standard clothing that is expected, and often dictated by a written dress code.

But, you don’t need an official dress code to understand what constitutes appropriate business attire in your workplace.

Look at what your boss wears. Observe what other successful employees wear to work. Your observations will tell you all that you need to know about proper and expected business attire for your workplace.

Your best success will come when you emulate the business attire of the favored employees. Draw attention to yourself by the quality and the value of the work you provide, not by the flashiness or fashion-mindedness of your business attire.

If you’re a new employee, ask when you receive your job offer what employees are expected to wear to work. Start out a new job by dressing just a little bit better than you believe is the norm in your new workplace to make a good first impression. First impressions are significant and you want yours to be memorable for its positive predictive message.

Workplace success guide books have suggested that employees need to dress for the job that they want to have, not the job they have. I’m not sure how valid this is, but notice that even in a casual business attire environment, executives usually dress slightly more formally, in business casual attire.

But, do understand, the total impression that you make on your colleagues and bosses has implications for how you are viewed in your workplace.

How you dress is such a simple aspect of your self-presentation to modify that career success and advancement should be more important than your need to express your individual, quirky personality at work. Business attire is important because it sends messages about you—fairly or unfairly—to customers, clients, bosses, company executives, and coworkers. People do judge you by your appearance.

Degrees of Formality in Business Attire

Traditional business attire consisted of:

  • Men: formal suit, tie, business shirt, upscale sports jackets with ties and a business shirt, leather dress shoes, appropriate conservative leather accessories such as briefcases, portfolios, and diaries. Men were encouraged to keep accessories like watches and cologne subtle.
  • Women: skirt suits or pant suits with formal business blouses or tops, stockings, closed toe and heel leather shoes, and appropriate business accessories including a briefcase, a leather folder for pads of paper, and a conservative pen. Women were encouraged to keep jewelry, makeup, and perfume subtle and elegant.

Find a detailed dress code and an image gallery that illustrates traditional business attire.

Smart casual business attire, just a step down from traditional, formal attire, consists of:

    • Men: sports jacket with a tie, dress pants, button down or traditional business shirt or nice turtleneck, dress shoes, and attractive accessories as described in traditional business attire.
    • Women: jacket or dressy sweater, dress pants or skirt, blouse, shirt, top or turtleneck, hose, dress shoes, and accessories as described in traditional business attire.

Find an image gallery that illustrates smart casual business attire.

    Business casual attire consists of:

    • Men: khakis, dress, or Dockers-type pants, shirts or golf-type shirts with collars, sweaters, vests, occasionally an informal jacket and tie, and attractive leather shoes and accessories.

    • Women: nice pants or skirts, blouses, tops, sweaters, vests, occasionally an informal jacket, and attractive leather shoes and accessories.

Find a detailed dress code and an image gallery that illustrates business casual attire. The business casual attire dress code emphasizes what is inappropriate, which is helpful.

    Casual business attire consists of:

    • Men: casual pants and jeans, shirts with collars or not, sweaters, vests, sweatshirts, casual shoes including sandals and athletic wear.
    • Women: casual pants, skirts, and jeans, blouses, tops, sweaters, vests, sweatshirts, casual shoes including sandals and athletic wear.

Find a detailed dress code and an image gallery that illustrates casual business attire. The casual business attire dress code emphasizes what is inappropriate, which is helpful.

By following these guidelines, you can look professional in your selected business attire in your workplace. Just understand the standard that is expected, dress according to these guidelines, and assemble a wardrobe that is attractive and comfortable.

Avoid looks that you would wear to a party, the beach, an athletic competition, to do house cleaning, or to a club. Professional business attire doesn’t define an employee’s competence.

But, it goes a long way in influencing the impression of your boss, coworkers and customers about your capabilities and professionalism. Professional business attire is a must in any workplace.

    Business Traditional Attire

A business traditional dress code enhances your professional image and personal brand in the workplace. This page provides style guidelines for on-campus activities where this dress code is required. The gallery and descriptions on this page help define “business traditional.”

Clothing should be crisp, neat, pressed and never wrinkled, to project a professional, business-like image. Torn, dirty or frayed clothing is unacceptable.

The standard dress code in a business environment is a cross between business casual and business formal. While business traditional attire is appropriate in many corporate environments, it is not acceptable in formal business settings where employers may be present, or for interviews.

Business traditional attire for men may include a non-matching suit (dress pant with sport jacket), a matching suit (dress pant and jacket) with no-tie option, or simply a dress pant, collared dress shirt and tie combination. There is more leniency in business traditional attire and brighter colours and/or patterned dress shirts are acceptable.

A dress pant, skirt, or dress with a non-matching jacket is recommended business traditional attire for women. Depending on the season, jackets may be ¾ length or short sleeve. A crop pant suit (matching or not) is also suitable; however the pant hem should hit mid-calf.

Skirts and dresses should always sit at or just above the knee. A collared blouse or dress-material top is recommended, and should either be tucked in or fall just below your waistline. Tops should never hang below the hem of your suit jacket, or be too short that they show your stomach. Always be cautious that dress shirts are not too revealing in any business setting. Pantyhose are not required, however during the fall and winter seasons darker pantyhose or tights are recommended when wearing skirts.

Depending on the colour or tone of your outfit, a black or brown belt should be worn. Coloured or white belts are not recommended. Never wear white socks with business attire. Dress socks should always be worn, preferably in a tone matching your pants and shoes. When in doubt, wear black dress socks. If desired, simple and tasteful jewellery is appropriate; chunky and or bright accessories are not recommended. See the gallery below for examples. Click on the images for a larger version.

Shoes, boots, flats, open-toed and closed-toed shoes in a leather or dress material are appropriate and should be clean and polished.

    Jewellery, Makeup, Perfume, and Cologne

These should be in good taste, with limited visible body piercing. Makeup should be used minimally to represent a natural look. Remember, some colleagues are allergic to the chemicals in perfumes and makeup, so wear these substances with restraint.

    Religious and Health Accommodations

Should a bona fide religious practice, belief or legitimate health need conflict with the dress code, reasonable accommodations will be made.

    Business Formal Attire

A business formal dress code enhances the professional image of your workplace environment and your personal brand. This page provides style guidelines for on-campus activities where this dress code is required. The gallery and descriptions on this page help define “business formal.”

Clothing should be crisp, neat, pressed and never wrinkled, to project a professional, business formal image. Torn, dirty, and unmatched clothing is unacceptable.

The standard dress code in a business formal environment is a full matching business suit, including a jacket and dress pants or a dress skirt. The darker the suit, the more formal!

In addition to matching pants and jacket, men should wear a button-up collared shirt, paired with a tie. Refrain from wearing bold and bright colours or patterns in dress shirts; white, beige or light blue are safe colours for collared shirts. Choose a tie with colours and tones that match your suit and dress shirt; bolder colours and patterns are acceptable for ties. Some men choose to wear a three-piece suit, in which case the vest colour and material match the jacket and slacks.

A dress pant or skirt with matching jacket is considered business formal for women. Depending on the season, jackets may be ¾ length or short sleeve. A crop pant suit is also suitable, however the pant hem should hit mid-calf and this style is not recommended in an interview setting. Skirts should always sit at or just above the knee. A collared blouse or dress-material top is recommended, and should either be tucked in or fall just below your waistline. Tops should never hang below the hem of your suit jacket, or be so short that they show your stomach. Always be cautious that dress shirts are not too revealing in any business setting. Dress socks should always be worn, preferably in a tone matching your suit and shoes. When in doubt, wear black dress socks. Optional accessories for men include cufflinks or a pocket-square. The material should match the tie. If desired, women may wear simple and tasteful jewellery; chunky and/or bright accessories are not recommended.

Shoes, boots, flats, open-toed and closed-toed shoes in a leather or dress material are appropriate and should be clean and polished.

    Jewellery, Makeup, Perfume, and Cologne

    Business Attire When Traveling

Your travel attire speaks volumes about your business. (Photo: Jupiterimages/Comstock/Getty Images )

    Related Articles

If your job requires you to travel for meetings, your attire should reflect the same professional image of your company as if it were a regular day at the office. Flying cross-country, however, puts special demands on your wardrobe that you probably don’t think about during your daily commute in a car. Furthermore, as tempting as it is to don casual duds for comfort and simply change your clothes upon arrival, the reality of flight delays, missed connections, lost luggage — and no time for shopping — puts you at risk of making a sloppy impression.

    Fabrics

Avoid any fabrics that are easily susceptible to wrinkles. That crisp linen suit, for instance, may look flawless when you first put it on, but several hours of sitting, wearing a seatbelt and bending your arms will make you look like you’ve slept in it. Travel knits, silk, wool, fleece, cotton blends and microfiber not only retain their shape but are also comfortable. If you’re traveling during warm weather, choose lightweight fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin and dry quickly.

    Colors

For business travel attire, conservative colors are always appropriate. Black, navy, grey and beige are appropriate for either gender, and you can pair them with white or soft pastel blouses and shirts. For women, patterned skirts or dark slacks — along with a tailored jacket — are a smart defense against those inevitable tray-table spills.

    Mix and Match

If you know you will be attending meetings over the course of several days and don’t want to project a wardrobe rut, pack a variety of scarves, ties, vests and sweaters that you can pair with different elements. For men, take a sport coat along with your suit. Consider reversible items that not only give you two looks for the packing space of one but are also beneficial if one side gets stained.

    Footwear

Your favorite boots may be stylish and trendy, but they take time to remove; pack them in your bag rather than wearing them through airport security. Slip-on loafers for men and low heels for women look smart with business attire and are also practical if you need to race through terminals without fear of tripping.

    Carry-on

If you have an evening meeting the day of your arrival, never assume you’ll have enough time to go to your hotel first and change. Pack a pair of dress shoes and a fresh blouse or shirt in your carry-on bag. A scented dryer sheet will help dissipate any musty smells typically associated with pressurized airplane cabins.

Pantyhose are not required, however during the fall and winter seasons, darker pantyhose or tights are recommended when wearing skirts.

Depending on the colour or tone of your suit, a black or brown belt should be worn. Coloured or white belts are not recommended. Never wear white socks with a suit.

These should be in good taste, with limited visible body piercing. Makeup should be used minimally to represent a natural look. Remember, some colleagues are allergic to the chemicals in perfumes and makeup, so wear these substances with restraint.

    Religious and Health Accommodations

Should a bona fide religious practice, belief or legitimate health need conflict with the dress code, reasonable accommodations will be made.
