Recent Achievements

Dr. Keith Cruise is co-principal investigator for a new grant to improve practices and outcomes for youth in the juvenile justice system at risk of negative after-effects from trauma. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention funded this collaborative effort under the direction of staff at the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice. Center for Trauma Recovery and Juvenile Justice. as well as various state and county level justice departments.

Congratulations to four of our CPDP faculty who have have been awarded six new research grants (5 of which are federally-funded, and 5 multi-year) that total almost $1-million in total direct costs. All of these grants focus on cross-cultural and/or vulnerable, underrepresented minority (URM) populations.

Our new research projects add to our CPDP faculty s multi-million dollar research portfolio across numerous faculty. These new projects also bolster our existing strengths in each of our core training areas. As detailed in the last column of the table above, each of the new projects contributes to our training in:

  • Biomedical, Psychosocial, Sociocultural aspects of Clinical Psychology
  • Our rigorous cross-cutting Training Priorities (i.e. Research Methodology, Research Ethics Forensic Issues, Assessment Techniques, and Advanced Analytics)
  • Our four core training settings and the vulnerable populations in these settings (i.e. School, Healthcare, Forensic Mental Health, and Community Engaged Ethics Research; children, adolescents, older adults; and vulnerable and understudied populations such as HIV, refugees, low SES, etc.)

Overview of newly funded research projects

  • Dr. Cruise has two new projects. The first is funded by the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice. This project will implement a new screening tool for juvenile justice community diversion centers. The second project is funded by SAMHSA and provides trauma support for youths who are at risk of, or already involved with the juvenile justice system. Both projects focus on Forensic Mental Health Settings vulnerable, low-income URM youth.
  • Dr. Rivera Mindt has a new project funded by the Alzheimer s Association that examines how genetic (APOE 4) and nongenetic (cerebrovascular, sociocultural) risk factors contribute to cognitive neural abnormalities in aging HIV+ Latinas/os. Trainees will collect and analyze data using novel Research Methodologies (i.e. genetics, neuroimaging, sociocultural), and this project incorporates Biomedical and Sociocultural training within a Healthcare setting with vulnerable, low-income URM older adults.
  • Dr. Rosenfeld received support from a Health Disparities/Equities Research Supplement to his NCI-funded R21 grant and contributes to our Research Ethics Forensic Issues training. This project focuses on health disparities by adding a sample of Latina/o cancer patients to an on-going study to validate a new measure of prognostic understanding. This project occurs in a Healthcare setting and involves research with Latina/o cancer patients.
  • Dr. Yip has a new project funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities and contributes to our Sociocultural training. This project adds a sample of Chinese adolescents to a study of ethnic/racial discrimination, sleep disturbance and health to an on-going study exploring the same associations among Black and Hispanic youth funded by the NSF. This project takes place in public School settings and involves ethnically diverse youth.

School and Ranking Information

Though few in number, there are four culinary arts programs in Minneapolis. Two of those have been accredited by the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

  • Winner: Saint Paul College, a community and technical college, is one of just two schools in Minnesota with an ‘exemplary’ rating from the ACF.
  • Runner Up #1: Hennepin Technical College has also been approved by the federation and provides students with the opportunity to become certified culinarians.
  • Runner Up #2: Minneapolis Community and Technical College, although unaccredited, has culinary arts faculty that do include ACF-certified instructors.

Saint Paul College offers certificate, diploma, and/or degree programs in baking, the culinary arts, or short-order cooking. According to the college, job placement rates for graduates with a culinary arts degree or diploma stand at 73.3% and 82.4% respectively. Students who complete the baking and decorating or short-order cooking certificates (which require between 9 and 25 credits) have corresponding placement rates of 91.7% and 90.9%. In addition to working in the on-campus, City View Grille restaurant, culinary students also have the chance to do some on- and off-site catering.

The 55-credit culinary diploma program includes topics in breakfast and buffet foods, commercial food production, meat fabrication, and ice carving. Similar training can be found in the 68-credit Associate of Applied Science curriculum, which also requires courses in general education. Qualified graduates of both programs may be eligible for status as Certified Culinarians from the ACF, as well as certification as Minnesota Food Managers.

Runner-Up #1: Hennepin Technical College

At Hennepin Technical College, students can choose between a 38-credit diploma and a 64-credit Associate of Applied Science program in the culinary arts. Both courses of study are designed to prepare aspiring professionals for ACF certification and include training in basic baking and food preparation, dining room service, and garde manger. Students enrolled in the degree program also learn how to prepare decorative food presentations and take courses in beverage management and catering.

The college also offers three, 16-credit advanced technical or occupational certificates in food and beverage, food service, and gourmet cooking. Students pursuing the gourmet-cooking program must complete the Culinary Assistant Certificate or the first-semester coursework required by the culinary diploma and degree programs. The food and beverage program is especially intended for students who are currently enrolled in a culinary arts program, or have one year of industry-related experience, and includes topics in food and beverage pairings, global cuisine, and wine.

Runner-Up #2: Minneapolis Community and Technical College

The Minneapolis Community and Technical College awards a certificate, a diploma, and an Associate of Applied Science degree in the culinary arts. Common coursework includes topics in baking, culinary basics, nutrition, and sanitation. Unique to the 54-credit diploma and the 60-credit degree curricula are topics in casual dining and international cuisine. Students who pursue the 16-credit certificate program in baking also learn how to prepare artisan breads.

In addition to the culinary credentials, the college offers a 30-credit certificate and a 60-credit Associate of Applied Science program in restaurant management program that may prepare students for positions on cruise ships, in hotels or resorts. Requirements include some of the same courses found in the culinary program, as well as a 160-hour internship and the chance to earn the ServSafe alcohol and sanitation certifications. Degree-seeking students also complete a 2-credit, restaurant management capstone.

Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies

Communication Studies focuses both on the practice and development of skills for competent communication, as well as analyzing and studying the how people create shared meanings and interpretations of the world around them. Students with communication competency can find success in a variety of careers and enriched personal relationships: Communication Studies aims to connect the classroom to the real world.

Faculty in the department specialize in communication skills related to problem-solving and conflict management — whether it is using negotiation or mediation skills in interpersonal relationships or using collaboration and deliberation to understand and devise solutions for community problems. In this, the department focuses on two interrelated areas of communication: Relational Dynamics (RD) and Public Advocacy and Civic Engagement (PACE).

Relational Dynamics: focuses on the development and maintenance of relationships (personal, friendship, romantic, family, workplace, organizational, intercultural and community).

Public Advocacy and Civic Engagement: focuses on how we influence and persuade public audiences through speaking, argument, and mediated communication. Students in this track learn about advocacy campaigns in business, political, community or social movement contexts.

Just as an altar in a sanctuary requires upkeep and maintenance to feel sacred, so does the body, woman.

Winter pisses me off.

February descends and my easy good times vaporize.

Going to the gym is hard. Everything is complicated, and I don’t want to leave my house.

Women are encouraged to avoid our own wail. We suppress our rage. We are taught to cut off from our unhappiness, overstep our discomfort and bypass our deep grief and sorrow.

This detour around the truth creates a huge consequence.

Like every single one of us, I work hard.

I especially work hard when I launch a new program. Last weekend’s Mastery launch was not only the highlight of my teaching career with the largest, most expressive, most brilliant Mastery class ever, but my incredible team was absolutely spot on, glorious, gorgeous, generous and flawless.

Let’s say you were making a drawing of yourself.

And it was a drawing of how much you listened to your head, versus your body.

Like most women, I was raised to hate my body.

To discount and overlook her.

Transfer Degrees

Our primary Transfer Degrees are the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees (offered by the Arts and Sciences Division). These are specifically designed to be the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. They allow you to transfer your Columbus State credits to another college and apply them to a four-year degree.

Career Programs can also transfer. Our Career Programs degrees are designed to qualify you for a job upon graduation, but most of them can also be applied to a four-year degree. Search Transfer Agreements to see where your Career Programs degree can transfer.

Associate of Arts / Associate of Science

Arts and Sciences Advising

The Arts Sciences Academic Advising Team advises students seeking the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree for transfer to colleges and universities awarding bachelor’s degrees. Students can consult with an advisor for degree graduation planning, assistance with developing achieving academic goals, and transfer resources.

Ohio Transfer Module

The Ohio Transfer Module is a set of courses that fulfills general education requirements for all Ohio public colleges. Completion of the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees guarantees completion of the Ohio Transfer Module as well.

Why should I get my Associate degree if I’m just going to transfer?

  • Big savings: The difference between one year and two years at Columbus State translates to as much as $25,000 that you don’t need to find, save, or borrow.
  • Students completing an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree at Columbus State Community College will be considered to have met all transferable lower division general education requirements for all state-supported institutions in Ohio.
  • With an associate degree, you’re guaranteed to enter your four-year school as a junior. That ensures you get the maximum credit for the classes you’ve already completed toward your general education requirements.

And we know completing the associate degree is a great first step – students who transferred after completing an associate of arts or associate of science degree were 77% more likely to complete a bachelor degree in 4 years (compared with students who didn’t finish their associate degree).
