Air Conditioner Basics, A Homeowner s Guide To Home Cooling, standard air conditioner.#Standard #air

#

standard air conditioner

Your air conditioner is designed to automatically remove unwanted heat from your home. By understanding some basics, you can help it do this efficiently. This will in turn allow you to keep more of your hard earned money.

These systems consist of an evaporator coil, a condensing unit, and refrigerant lines. These parts work with the fan and control system in the furnace/air handler to cool your home.

Basic Operating Sequence.

The cooling cycle starts when the thermostat senses that the home’s air temperature is above the thermostat setpoint. Contacts in the thermostat are closed and control voltage (24 vac) is supplied to the furnace control board y and g terminals. This causes the blower on the furnace/air handler to start.

The furnace/air handler control board then supplies control voltage to the outdoor part of the system which is called the condensing unit. This control voltage causes a device called a contactor to close its contacts. This supplies power to a fan and to a pump that is referred to as a compressor.

This pump raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas in the system. This high temperature and high pressure refrigerant passes through the outdoor coil. This coil which is called the condenser coil works the same way as the radiator on a car except it uses refrigerant instead of water. In the condenser, this high pressure refrigerant is cooled and condenses from a gas to a liquid. It is usually cooled to a temperature about 20 degrees below the saturation temperature and is called subcooling.

This high pressure/low temperature liquid refrigerant is pumped to the indoor section of the system. Then the refrigerant passes through a metering device which regulates the flow to the evaporator coil. In smaller and older systems this device consisted of small copper tubes called capillary tubes which lowered the flow and pressure. Others use specialized flow restrictor devices. Modern high efficiency systems use a device called a thermostatic expansion valve.

Standard air conditioner

This device senses the refrigerant temperature at the outlet of the evaporator and automatically adjusts a valve to regulate refrigerant flow.

These devices cause the refrigerant pressure to go down. Air is circulated over and through the evaporator coil by the fan on the furnace/air handler. Heat from the home’s air is transferred to the refrigerant. This heat raises the temperature of the refrigerant above the saturation point and it changes back into a gas. The flow of refrigerant is regulated so that extra heat is added above the saturation temperature. This is called superheat and is added to ensure that the refrigerant stays in the form of a gas as it goes through the compressor. This refrigerant gas is then pumped back to the condenser where the process repeats itself over and over.

When the thermostat senses that the home’s temperature is below the setpoint, the contacts are opened and control voltage is no longer supplied to the furnace or the air conditioner.

Air Conditioner Size & Efficiency?

The size of an air conditioner is expressed as tons of cooling capacity. (The process of finding the proper size unit for your home is called a load calculation .) A ton is equal to the ability of the system to remove 12000 btu of heat per hour. Btu stands for British Thermal Unit and is just a standard measure of heat.

The relative measurement of a unit’s energy use to perform this cooling is it’s SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is a ratio of the cooling output divided by the power input. The minimum efficiency of these units that can be manufactured in the U.S.A. is mandated by federal law and is a SEER of 13. In general terms, the higher a unit’s SEER number, the less electricity it requires to produce the rated amount of cooling.

Premium Features.

Higher efficiency units typically have some special features. They usually have two stages (speeds) of operation. In some cases this is accomplished by having two compressors in the unit. One is ran on low speed and both are energized for high speed. In other cases this is achieved by having one compressor with two motors inside it. One motor is energized for low speed and the other is energized for high speed operation.

On some high efficiency units the condenser fan motor can operate in low or high speed too. The most advanced units have a variable speed fan motor to precisely balance the airflow and limit the noise production.

The highest efficiency air conditioner uses an advanced compressor called an inverter drive. This compressor has a motor that runs on direct current(DC) instead of the normal alternating current(AC). The unit is supplied with the normal AC power and a device called an inverter changes it to DC. This DC power can be easily varied to provide almost an endless number of speeds. This allows the unit to precisely match the cooling requirements of the home and can save a lot of energy.

For more information.

Your ac requires some basic maintenance . This is critical for long equipment life and for the unit to perform it’s job efficiently. You can pay a company to do it or, with a little help, you can do it yourself and save.

Even the finest built air conditioner will not always work. But, did you know that most times it is really easy to fix? An average repair call will cost over $100. With our troubleshooting guide you can minimize the need to make that dreaded call.

Like anything else, these units will not last forever. When the time comes to replace it, there are many brands of air conditioning units to choose from and it can be very confusing. But, with our brand ratings you can basically take a repairman with you while you shop. It is like having a member of the family in the heating and air conditioning business.

With our buying guide , you get tips to help you select a unit.

Not all installation jobs are the same. If you don’t know what to look for, it is easy to make mistakes. With our installation guide , you can be sure the job was performed to high standards before you write the check.

Is central air conditioning more energy-efficient than window units?

Is central air conditioning more energy-efficient than window units?

Global Cooling

For many urbanites, summer means being constantly dripped on from the air conditioners that fill virtually every city window. These ubiquitous boxes must consume a tremendous amount of energy. From an environmental perspective, aren’t central air conditioners better?

Not necessarily. Air conditioning accounts for more than 15 percent of the energy use of the average home—somewhere around 183 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the United States per year, according to a 2001 analysis by the Energy Information Administration. Generating that much electricity creates about 119 million tons of carbon dioxide, or roughly the amount of CO2 spewed by 20 million cars each year. Remarkably, the percentage of homes with central air more than doubled. from 27 to 55 percent, between 1980 and 2001.

When deciding on how to air-condition your abode, you have two basic choices: single-room units or a centralized system. Anyone who’s been to a big-box hardware store has seen the single-room air conditioners. They’re heavy, steel boxes designed to wedge into a window and dangle precariously over passing pedestrians. (In case you were wondering: Yes, they do fall on people .) Inside, there’s a condenser, an evaporator, a thermostat, and a couple of fans .

Central air conditioners have a different structure altogether. The condenser typically sits on the roof or in the backyard. A set of pipes runs coolant from the condenser into an air handler, which is usually located near the home’s furnace. The air handler blows the cooled air through the home’s duct system and into individual rooms.

A central air system’s energy efficiency is measured two ways. The more basic rating is the energy efficiency ratio, or EER, which describes the unit’s energy consumption while cooling a prescribed volume of 95-degree air over the course of an hour in a specialized laboratory. The seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or SEER, is a bit more complicated and considers the average energy use at various temperatures and humidity levels.

Window units are rated only by EER, and lose out to central A/C by this metric. An Energy Star-certified central unit must have a minimum EER of 12. while window units only need to achieve between 9.4 and 10.7. depending on size, to be certified. (It’s possible to buy a window unit rated higher than this minimum, but the same goes for central units. Overall, the central units are still rated higher.)

One reason window air conditioners have lower ratings is that it’s impossible to fit much advanced hardware into that little box. While modern central air conditioners can work at a range of speeds, for example, the condensers in most window units only have two: on and off. (This is, incidentally, the primary reason window air conditioners don’t get SEER ratings.)

This can make a significant difference in energy use. Air conditioners not only lower air temperature; they also remove moisture. Just how much moisture is removed depends on how much air passes through the air conditioner. A machine that only works at full speed (or not at all) can drop a room’s temperature quickly by cooling just a small volume of air to an extremely cold state. In contrast, an air conditioner with variable speed settings can have the same effect by processing a larger volume of air, but cooling each unit volume by a smaller amount. The latter situation results in greater dehumidification because more air runs through the machine.

While this seems like a technical point, it’s quite significant, because it means users can set central air conditioners to a higher temperature and feel just as comfortable, because the air is less humid.

But the window units have their advantages, too. Central air conditioners suffer from “duct losses.” As cooled air passes through the system of ducts on its way to the rooms, it warms up and often leaks through the fittings. These losses can decrease an air conditioner’s energy efficiency by up to 30 percent.

Window units that block the sun from your room, buzz, and shake violently every time the condenser switches on are basically begging for attention—very few consumers walk out the door without remembering to shut off their window units. The quiet and unobtrusive functioning of central air conditioners, on the other hand, can lead to accidental overuse. Industry observers note that people tend to set their central air conditioner to a comfortable temperature and never change it.

Window units also offer room-by-room control. For singletons or couples who occupy only one bedroom at night, cooling a single room consumes a small fraction of the energy that a central air conditioner would.

Central air units are getting smarter, though, and accordingly more efficient. Programmable thermostats can make up for forgetful central A/C users by shutting the unit off when no one is home. Some central air systems even divide homes into separately controlled zones, so you don’t have to cool the kitchen at 3 a.m. just to keep your bedroom a sleepable temperature. And some new central air conditioners have an air handler in each room, skipping the ducts entirely, combining precise control with improved efficiency and less noise.

Because of the construction and behavioral variables, it’s impossible to pronounce a winner in this particular competition. As is often the case, the choice is often going to come down to each consumer’s behavior. Generally speaking, the newfangled ductless system is going to be the most efficient but priciest option upfront. If you’re choosing between an old-school central air system and window units, the latter could be better if you’re childless, live in a large home in a dry environment, or tend to be forgetful about adjusting your thermostat.

The Lantern thanks Jennifer Amann of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

Air Conditioner Buying Guide – Best Buy #air #conditioner #service #car, #air #conditioner #buying

#

No matter where you live, it’s important to be prepared for the hottest days of the year with a reliable air conditioner. Whether you’re replacing an old window unit or installing through-the-wall air conditioners in your new home, we can help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Use this guide to explore the different types of air conditioners and the unique benefits and features available.

Topics in this Air Conditioner Buying Guide:

Choosing an Air Conditioner

When figuring out which type of air conditioner you need, consider the following:

  • Frequency of use
  • Room size
  • Whether it will be in a room with a lot of sun exposure or a kitchen with hot appliances
  • Whether it will be permanent or temporary

You’ll also want to make note of any significant features that would increase convenience for you, such as remote controls, noise damping technology or smart features.

Portable Air Conditioners

These types of air conditioners offer more flexibility than window or in-wall air conditioners since they don’t require permanent installation and can be moved from room to room. If you plan on transporting your portable unit regularly, be sure to find a model with casters since they can be quite heavy. These units use the air from inside the room to cool the condenser and exhaust the hot air out of a hose that vents through a window, sliding door, wall or ceiling. There are a few ways water is drained from portable air conditioners. In self-evaporating systems, often referred to as “swamp coolers,” the water condensation is recycled back into the air. If you buy a condensate pump, excess water will be pumped outside through a hose. Other models require you to manually empty the water tank every few hours.

Advantages of a portable air conditioner:

  • Easy set up and doesn’t require permanent installation
  • Can be moved from room to room
  • Casters for easy movement
  • Timer
  • Remote control

Hose systems vs. evaporative systems

Units with hose systems use air from the room to cool their condensers. Units with evaporative systems don’t have a compressor or condenser. Instead, they evaporate water which absorbs heat, cooling the air. They don’t need hoses to vent heat outside, which makes them more portable than hose systems.

Advantages of an evaporative cooler:

  • Beneficial in dry climates since it adds moisture to the air
  • More portable than hose systems
  • Requires constant supply of water
  • Must be well maintained because of potential mold and bacteria

Shop:

Window Air Conditioners

Available in a number of sizes and cooling capacities, these types of units can be used as a primary cooling source in a room, or in combination with your central AC. Before purchasing a window unit, you’ll want to take measurements to ensure it will properly fit your window. You’ll also want to look at the outlet in your wall to make sure it’s compatible with the kind of plug on the AC unit.

Window units are made for three different types of windows standard, slider and casement. These units are installed in an open window with the hot air exhaust facing outside and the cool air return system facing inside. A shaded window will offer extra cooling efficiency.

Fixed chassis vs. slide-out chassis

A chassis is a frame that supports the air conditioner. It’s important to note whether the chassis is fixed or not because units with a slide-out chassis can be installed in a window or a wall, while a fixed-chassis unit can only be installed in a window. A slide-out chassis enables easy maintenance and cleaning since the inside of the machine is easily accessible once you slide out the chassis.

Advantages of a window air conditioner:

  • Allows for extra floor space
  • Easy to install and uninstall
  • Some models have a slide-out chassis
  • Timer
  • Remote control
  • Requires installation
  • Takes up window space
  • Limited to use in one room

Through-the-Wall Air Conditioners

Wall air conditioners are very similar to window air conditioners with the main difference being that they sit in your wall instead of in a window opening. These units exhaust heat and humidity from the room to the outside and fit through a hole in an exterior wall. They require a sleeve, which is a metal device that holds the air conditioner in the wall to support its weight. If you already have a sleeve installed, you’ll need to identify what type it is. If there’s no existing sleeve and you need to put a hole in your wall, professional installation is recommended.

Slide-out chassis vs. through-the-wall sleeves

Slide-out chassis air conditioners come as one unit the chassis and the sleeve. These units vent through the sides and the back of the air conditioner. Through-the-wall air conditioners do not come with a sleeve. Sleeves are sold separately and these units only vent through the back of the air conditioner.

Advantages of a through-the-wall air conditioner:

  • Typically available in higher cooling capacities than window units
  • Allows for extra window space
  • Can be placed almost anywhere
  • Airtight and secure fit
  • Remote control
  • Timer
  • Digital thermostat
  • Labor intensive installation
  • More difficult than window units to uninstall
  • Weighs slightly more than window units

BTUs

BTUs (British Thermal Units) measure the amount of heat an air conditioner can remove from the air over a given period of time. The higher the number, the greater the cooling capacity, but bigger isn’t always better. In order to properly cool a room you have to match the BTU capacity of the air conditioner to the dimensions of the room that needs cooling. An underpowered air conditioner won’t cool a large room properly. On the other hand, one that has too high of a BTU rating cools the area so quickly that it doesn’t have time to dehumidify the air, which can leave the space feeling cold and clammy.

When selecting the appropriate BTU rating to match a room by square feet, consider ceiling height, sizes of windows and doorways, and whether the unit will be in a sunny room or a kitchen with extra heat from appliances.

Use the chart below to help you find the right BTU capacity for your space

AREA TO BE COOLED (SQUARE FEET)

CAPACITY RECOMMENDED (BTUs PER HOUR)

Installing a Window Unit

All window air conditioners come with an installation kit and you can usually install them yourself. You may need to attach a support bracket to the windowsill to support the weight of the unit. Be sure to use caution and have someone help you lift the air conditioner since they can be very heavy. Attach the accordion-like panels to the side of the unit and then set it on the support bracket, making sure it snaps into place. Once the air conditioner is secure, lower the window on top of it and extend the panels to both sides of the frame and screw them into place. Then, fill any gaps with foam weather stripping to provide a tight seal that will prevent heat, dust and insects from getting inside.

Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency Ratings (EERs) are numbers that measure the amount of energy a unit requires to deliver a given amount of cooling. A higher EER translates to lower relative energy use. Units with a high EER are usually more expensive initially, but may save you money in the long run by reducing your monthly energy costs. Weigh the price increase of more efficient models against the potential savings on your energy bill to find out if a high-efficiency unit is the right choice for you.

ENERGY STAR Certified Air Conditioners

Look for air conditioners with the ENERGY STAR label to reduce your energy bills and to help protect the environment. These air conditioners meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. They use less energy than non-certified models, making them environmentally friendly and saving you money.

Accessories

To properly install your air conditioner and keep it in good condition you may need a few accessories. If you’re installing a window air conditioner, you might need a support bracket to support its weight. If you’re installing a through-the-wall air conditioner, you’ll need a sleeve to support its weight, unless you have a slide-out chassis air conditioner that already comes with a sleeve as part of the unit. Replacement filters will keep your air conditioner performing smoothly long after you install it. Other accessories are available for convenience purposes. For instance, if your air conditioner doesn’t come with a remote control, you might be able to purchase a compatible one separately. You can find all of these accessories and more at Best Buy.

Air Condition Compressor is considered as the core part of any air conditioning system. In your vehicle’s air conditioning system, the Air Conditioning Compressor may sometimes get faulty due to heavy usage. The core functionality of an Air Condition Compressor is to compress the refrigerant and spread them evenly throughout the Air Conditioning system and thats why it is considered as the heart of any Air Conditioning system. An Air Condition Compressor is a mechanical pump that is operated by a belt fitted to a vehicle’s engine. The Air Condition Compressor pulley fitted with the engine makes to and fro movement with the help of the AC compressor clutch, to feed fresh air in to the system. The Air Condition Compressor absorbs the refrigerant from the evaporator at a low pressure-side. Then it compresses the air and squeezes it into the condenser at a high-pressure. The Air Condition Compressor is also one of the junctions which divides both high and low pressure sides of the Air Conditioning system. When you sense an unusual belt-slipping noise or clutch burning smell under the dashboard of your vehicle, then its time to change your Air Condition Compressor.

If you find any of the above troubles in your Air Condition Compressor, definitely, you need an exact factory replacement, which is available at Discount AC Parts. We have listed almost all AC parts in our online catalog which are highly tested and genuine parts at easily affordable prices. All you need to do is to select the right year and the model of your vehicle, and get the replacement part.

Should You Get Your Air Conditioner s Ducts Cleaned? #cleaning #out #air #ducts

Should You Get Your Air Conditioner s Ducts Cleaned?

Sometimes you have to go at something backwards or inside out or sideways. Sometimes you’ve got to invert the normal thinking. Sometimes you have to invert it once and then invert it again to get something completely different, as Frank N. Furter did in the Rocky Horror Picture Show :

I’ll remove the cause
but not the symptom.

In the case of getting your air conditioner’s ducts cleaned, though, we’re dealing with a single step of inverted logic. I’ll get to that in a minute, so stick with me here.

Let’s say you’re concerned about the indoor air quality in your home and are facing the question of whether or not to have that duct cleaning company come in and clean out all the ducts in your heating and air conditioning system. They’ve showed you the magnified images of the dust mites that breed in your ducts and described in great detail all the other creepy crawlies and biology experiments that your dirty ducts nurture. You’re thoroughly horrified and are not only ready to hand them your first-born but to sacrifice goats and virgins if necessary, too.

But hold on a minute! Before you go forking over all your hard-earned cash or taking more money from your home equity line of credit, make sure the company you want to hire is going to ask all the right questions. In addition to, Are your air conditioner’s ducts dirty?, they should be asking:

Why are your air conditioner’s ducts dirty?

As long as they’re asking this question and proposing to solve the problems it reveals, then duct cleaning may be a good investment. If not, they’re treating a symptom and leaving the cause there, which means if they can hook you, they’ve got repeat business down the road.

But dirty ducts aren’t like dirty windows or a dirty car. If your ducts have a serious problem of being too dirty, you need to figure out why and then stop the dirt from getting in the ducts if you can.

One reason your ducts may be getting dirty is that your return vents, which pull air from the house back to the air handler for another round of heating or cooling, are in the floor. This arrangement is great for keeping your floors clean, but unfortunately, all that dirt goes into your ducts. Short of retrofitting the duct system to get the returns out of the floor, you should be using a filter inside the grille to keep your ducts cleaner.

Another major reason is duct leakage. especially on the return side of the duct system. Remember, the return ducts are under negative pressure. so any leaks in them will pull air into the ducts. If that leak is in a dirty crawl space or attic, it’s likely to be pulling in a lot of dirt, too. One of the worst types of return duct configurations is the panned joist return, as shown below.

In the panned joist return (or simply, panned return) the installer panned the joists with sheet metal and attached a duct to the bottom. In the house above, you may find a big floor grille, or they may have used a wall stack to get the vent into the wall.

Either way, panned returns are usually very leaky because the many joints and seams are often poorly sealed. In the photo above, they’ve used a little bit of asbestos tape (a whole nother issue!), but many of the places where crawl space air can leak in are unsealed. Even if they were sealed initially, expansion and contraction at the wood/metal junctions can cause the seal to break down over time.

The Lowdown

Duct cleaning isn’t a bad thing. Without treating the causes, though, it’s a short-term relief of symptoms at best and perhaps a nightmare for someone with allergies if they stir up and release into the house all that nasty stuff that’s inside the ducts. Duct cleaning should never be done without complete duct system analysis to find out where the dirt is coming from followed by the necessary repairs to stop the dirt from getting in. Of course, any duct system repairs should take into consideration the air flow in the duct system. If they do all that, you’ll get clean ducts that stay clean as well as a more energy efficient and comfortable home.

My company (Servpro) performs duct cleanings, but in my area, they are almost exclusively part of post-fire-damage cleanup. The franchise I work for does not have duct-cleaning equipment, so when it comes up we call one of the nearby franchises that have the equipment. We don’t advertise duct cleaning, except that it is among the list of services printed on the side of the trucks. To my knowledge, we have fielded exactly one call in the last 8 months from someone wanting ducts cleaned without having had a fire in or near their home. That one, we simply referred to the other franchise, and I don’t know what their sales procedure includes.

Lee. If someone’s had a fire in their home, duct cleaning is definitely in order. Also, I heard about this case yesterday, and if you have something like that in your ducts, you probably want to get them cleaned out afterward. But a lot of the duct cleaning companies don’t offer duct cleaning as part of a whole package that really improves someone’s home.

Well done. Thanks!
